Media News & Notes
Media Gossip/Musings September 8th. 2008, 5:15pm
Paid very little attention to the NFL pregame shows, but here’s what we did see (no volume, as we were at the gym): ESPN had a cool feature on Chris Johnson, the Fox guys looked kind of douchy throwing the football around, and Jillian Barberie looked off-the-charts, jaw-droppingly, incredible. Just spent a few minutes poking around the net, but couldn’t find a screengrab. Hiestand paid much closer attention to the shows than we did. (That’s not Barberie, but rather the girlfriend of tennis player Andy Murray, who is in the men’s final tonight against Federer.)
Tape delay never, ever works. Shame on you, CBS tennis people. (NY Post)
Isn’t the way ESPN handled Tom Brady’s knee injury staggering? In the era of report first and ask questions later, the WWL displayed unusual discipline and restraint in reporting on the Golden Boy’s ACL. They didn’t try to take it as their own, write any stories claiming a competitor “is reporting”, nor did ESPN try to poop on Mike Silver’s break of Brady’s season being complete.
ESPN’s only actual news in the 24 hours since Bernard Pollard ended Brady’s season came from former QB Trent Dilfer (he’s got sources!?), but Clayton and Mort were oddly mum throughout. What about their million dollar man, Michael Smith? He couldn’t work sources in Boston?
Media’s reaction to the new-and-improved Canes: Positive. (All Canes)
The first of what we imagine will be many Keith-must-go columns. (NY Daily News)
Emmitt Smith refused to talk to Jeff Pearlman for his book on the Cowboys – he’s “gallingly greedy and self-centered.” (Jeff Pearlman)

Trent Dilfer must go

It can’t be too difficult to find out who in the Pats locker room talked to Dilfer. Probably someone from the Bucs or Ravens, right? Maybe Seahawks? I bet the crossover is minimal and there are like three suspects.

Emmitt and Pearlman were on the same panel on Outside the Lines yesterday.
Emmitt said keep selling books Jeff while laughing and smirking. You could tell Emmitt would have beat his ass if Pearlman had been there in person.

I don’t mind Olbermann, but he should NOT be anchoring political coverage. Put him on a panel of some sorts, fine, but don’t have him lead the discussions. It would be the equivalent of having Bill O’Reilly anchor Fox News’ coverage.

which details the afternoon when Michael Irvin picked up a scissors and stabbed a teammate in the neck. “Man,†the Cowboy said, “we thought that would never get out.€ As a reporter, I feel awfully good about that.
Damn, someone read that book and tell me all the secrets so I don’t have to pay for it.

You are on the wrong path. Check out Logan Mankins, fellow Fresno St bulldog.

NSR: Love Olbermann, but I totally agree.
As far as the Open, I switched on the Murray/Nadal match Saturday while the weather on my part of Long Island was cloudy, not rainy. Naturally, I thought the match was live. But a quick visit to a sports news site showed the match was in a delay with Murray up 2 sets. Mushnick is spot on. Happens all the time. Surprised he didn’t bash Ebersol with his ‘plausibly live’ Olympics coverage over the years, which pretty much started that trend.

September 8th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
TBL, you will lose on both games.
September 8th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
You’ll win the Packer bet, TBL, but lose with the Raiders.

Or, you know, Olbermann could actually care about football and want to take a break from partisan hackery.
I don’t watch any of those shows, but if Limbaugh got a chance before shoving his foot in his mouth like it was a pain pill, why not give Olbermann a shot, too?
September 8th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
Limbaugh said that the media overrated McNabb because of their desire to see a black quarterback do well. This was a true statement then and is still true now. He never said black QB’s suck or anything else remotely racist. You don’t like Limbaugh, I get that. But at least know what you’re talking about instead of spouting partisan babble.
September 8th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
I’ll tell you what’s non-partisan: Bob Raissman’s mustache.
September 8th, 2008 at 6:10 pm
@ Groin
Since when does the media love black people, particularly black athletes? I don’t care about Limbaugh’s politics, but it’s just an unfounded statement. Yes, Donovan McNabb got a lot of hype. Yes, he is a black quarterback. But quarterbacks generally tend to get the lionshare of credit (or blame) for their teams’ performance. So where was this social concern when McNabb was getting crapped on after the Super Bowl and after all his injuries?
The quote:
“I think what we’ve had here is a little social concern in the NFL.
The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well.
There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit
for the performance of this team that he didn’t deserve.”

Thank you broseph for discussing this intelligently. You and I disagree and that’s fine. I got no problem with that. My problem was with the way Rush’s comments were distorted to make it sound like a racial slur or that he hates black people.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
@ Groin
Yeah, the media definitely loves to hate on Rush, so I understand why the reaction to his comments got way overwrought–they were making him out to be Jimmy the Greek or Al Campanis–again, I just didn’t find it to be a valid statement on his part. I DO think he tried to what he accused “the media” of doing–injecting politics into a conversation where it really didn’t belong.
OK, back to cheesecake shots and dick jokes.

“Jillian Barberie looked off-the-charts, jaw-droppingly, incredible.”
Do you mean as she looks in those Nutrisystem commercials, or somehow different? If the former, I would disagree. It’s a matter of taste, obviously, but she looks very skeletal and decidedly unhealthy in those commercials. Like if you touched her she’d break into a million pieces, like a blonde Death Star.
September 9th, 2008 at 9:01 am
Rush was right. McNabb is overhyped because he is a black QB. Just like Vince Young. Just like Culpepper.
