Coach K Revives Team USA (?), Snags Book Deal
Books, College Basketball, Olympics September 3rd. 2008, 5:15pm
Prior to our end of summer siesta, we wondered: How much props does Coach K deserve for guiding the USA hoops’ team to a Gold medal in Beijing?
Answer: A six-figure book deal (second item):
The book will be a firsthand account of how he worked with NBA superstars Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade and Carmelo Anthony to buy into his concept of teamwork that carried them back to Olympic gold after the US team was humiliated four years earlier … Wolff said he expects the book will be a case study in fundamental management techniques.
The release target is “next spring” (read “March Madness”). Three issues: 1) LeBron and Wade needed to buy into the concept of teamwork? WTF? 2) The thought of “fundamental management techniques” leading this team to victory seems laughable on multiple levels, but you just know that high school and small college coaches who are struggling to deal with the fundamentals-lacking AAU set will eat it up. Dirty little secret: LeBron has the teamwork thing down - finals two years ago with jokers; played the Celtics tougher than anyone else this postseason with jokers; Kobe just turned 30, and D Wade already had a title. 3) Marketing Olympic glory needs to be done now with one of those quickie books; good luck promoting it in March or April after Duke has already been bounced from the tourney, the baseball season commences, and the NFL draft circus begins.

I hate that man. Helluva coach, but I loathe him. But he did come to my high school to recruit Brian Zoubek, and my coach had me meet him on my way to the bus before a track meet cuz he knows I love college hoops, so that was cool. He really does resemble a weasel.

Dude, you admitted to not even seeing one single play of the Gold Medal game. This is hack journalism at its finest.

Billy, did you get rid of your avatar?

Weasel’s book will be #1 on the business best-seller list at some point, which is a sad indication of the businesses of this country. When businessmen are reading “Leading With The Heart” and “Sacred Hoops” as self-help books, its no wonder the US economy is in the shambles it’s in.
/TBL?

Well, I changed it to an Obama picture a couple days ago, and it’s taking forever to actually change over. Then after the election it’ll be either Ed Reed or a Ravens logo, then when Spring Training rolls around, will be back to the Oriole Bird.

Maybe a little Terps action in there somewhere.

Billy to remain pretend friends we should only talk about the Orioles.

TBL - What is wrong with him getting paid? Answer? Since you didnt watch the medal game you would not know that he didnt get a medal. You wouldnt know that 2 players launched sneakers in the gold medal game. You basically dont know anything but what TV tells you to know.

Somebody seems a bit tense.

KC, get back to fielding our HandBall USA team. Leave the harrassing TBL to me.

And whatever you say, cbh.

Watching the games leading up to it - doing running commentary, in fact - means nothing, I suppose.
Not a damn thing. I just think the premise, as stated in the NYP item, makes it seem like the out-of-control, uncoachable players needed a stern voice to lead them to the Gold. And that’s bullshit, IMO. I never said COach K didn’t do a solid job.

Yeah, the previous team parlaying on a fucking yacht outside of Greece did wonders. How would you handle 12 players with neck tats? Coming around to your side of the argument…..
September 3rd, 2008 at 6:33 pm
is there a correlation between neck tats and the ability to play the team sports of basketball?

People with neck tattoos = stupid
People without neck tattoos = less stupid
Stupid people = harder time learning basketball
Less stupid people = easier time learning basketball
