Ohio State Shouldn’t Bother Traveling West to California. USC is Going to Slaughter Them, Right?
College Football, Gambling September 8th. 2008, 3:00pm
Without their Heisman contender, Ohio State couldn’t move the football against the Ohio Bobcats this weekend. If not for five turnovers by the visitors … ah, let’s just get to the point: the Trojans opened as 9.5-point favorites, and it quickly ballooned to 10.5 and the “public” is all over it. It might end up at 12 by week’s end.
Hmmmm. Why’d the linesmakers set it so low without knowing the status of Beanie Wells, and after seeing how horrible the Buckeyes’ offense looked? Even voters on the Columbus Dispatch website seem to think USC is going to roll.
Something is amiss. Hey, we’re certain the Trojans are the superior team, and being at home, with a week off … it seems like a no-brainer, right? Tread with caution, people. Just a hunch, but it’s going to be close.

Lt. Drebin once said that he didn’t know much about boxing, but he knows to never bet on the white guy. I don’t know much about college football, but I know to never bet on the Big Ten.
Yes, Big Ten football = white boxers

Correct.
USC Vs. Florida. National Championship game.

Spence, I honestly feel for u as a sports fan right, first barely beating Ohio, the Browns getting killed by the ‘Boys, having to put up with all the Browns bashing in another post and now this… sounds like you’ve had a rough time lately
That being said I’m still taking USC by a TD+ this weekend sane Wells

September 8th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
I saw OSU fight once, in Corvallis.
No, you’re thinking of THE OSU, from Columbus.
Oh yeah, they were killed in the ring in New Orleans, by LSU.

wow, you’re all so awesome hating on OSU.
OH! WHY EVEN BOTHER BOARDING THE PLANE? IT’S NOT LIKE THEY’RE GOING TO WIN!!! NOW EXCUSE ME WHILE I ROOT FOR MY 8-4 TEAM PLAYING IN AN EQUALLY SHITTY CONFERENCE!!! OH, I’M SO FUCKING GREAT.

lol @ spence. Come on man. Thus far, you can’t be that confident going into this game can you? I mean really.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
USC should win this game after a nice bye week

Having not seen the game I don’t have anything to say specifically other than the opinion that surely Ohio State got caught looking ahead. While that does not seem to be a trait of a Tressel-coached team that had to be the case. The fact that they gave up 145 rushing yards to Ohio should scare the hell out of Spencer and his kind. While I think USC is much better I feel that after a week of getting blasted OSU should show up and compete for 3 qtrs (though I thought the same thing heading into the BCS title game last year). I like USC by 13 in a game that is never a blowout but never really in reach either.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Can he be a competent quarterback when he doesn’t have a lead? Answer: No.

September 8th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
I loved being stuck watching either Michigan or Ohio St Saturday at noon. It was like having to choose between jerking off with sand paper or icy hot.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
USC may beat the Bucks easily, but people should not read too much into the Ohio University game. The defense was still very solid. OU scored on a fumbled shot-gun snap and its only touchdown drive had a ridiculous 3rd down conversion. Offensively they will play better. They were flat and out of sync.
It was not a great performance by OSU, but you will have that when college kids are playing. Undoubtedly, they were looking ahead and in-state schools often give OSU a good game; Miami, Bowling Green, Cincinnati.
I am not confident that the Bucks will win, but this is not an automatic blow-out.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
Tressel has a history of showing very little the week before a big game.
That said, our offensive line looked very ordinary on Saturday. Hopefully they are just guilty of looking ahead to USC.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
I’m a Montana State University fan so I can talk all the shit I want.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
I was having a wonderful time watching o$u damn near lose to the Bobcats. If it weren’t for that long hair muffing that punt, I think they MAY have been able to pull it off. They could have eaten some clock added some more pressure and they would have still had the MO. If I were the Bobcats coach I would have told him to go to the bus right then and there, honestly.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
I would love for Mizzou to make a BCS game and play USC, UGA, LSU or FLA…hell, even TOSU. They would get hammered. Mizzou is all hat and no cattle as any redneck Palin supporter will tell you.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
9.5 is redonckulous.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
why shouldn’t i be confident? all i know about USC is that they can beat, perhaps, the worst virginia team in that school’s history and that the bucks got caught looking ahead.
im pretty confident that tressel will throw more than the 4 different offensive plays he showed against Ohio out there against USC.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Ohio had 145 yards on the ground against the Buckeyes and played with their second string QB…how again were they solid?
September 8th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Not to mention if the damn O-line does the “cattle to slaughter” BS like this past weekend we may see Prior and Bauserman playing.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Damn, long-hairs. They’ll steal your corn and rape your daughters. And they can’t catch punts.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

September 8th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
You must be the most confident OSU fan I can think of. Ohio State has played 2 extremely athletic teams in the last 2 years and was hammered by both of them and they are about to play perhaps the most athletic on the road to a team that has 2 weeks to prepare for them. If you know something I don’t let me in on it so I can make some money.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Where is cursed? He’s usually a reliable Buckeyes defender.

After watching o$u this year, I really don’t know what all the fuss is about. Hey, Michigan stinks no doubt about that, but does o$u really look that good? I think PSU is the best in conference this year… and I will always think Illinois can beat o$u on any given day. This truly is a down year in the Big Ten.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
CRM, I believe you mean THE Montana State University.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
How about looking at a point spread for what it is…a betting line…remember 75% (conservative) of the bettors only know that these two teams are national powerhouses and both are “good” so Vegas is going to slowly move that line to make the money even. This has nothing to do with who Vegas thinks is going to win or how they are going to win…it only has to do with how much money they can make. As any bookie knows you want to even out the money coming in on both sides of the bet and collect the Vig…
September 8th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Also, I’m thinking USC by 10. Ohio State covers.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
never tried it, but would IcyHot really be so bad?
September 8th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
This truly is a down year in the Big Ten.
When was the last year that wasn’t a down year in the Big Ten?
September 8th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Gods…it’s not that. does USC make me nervous? absolutely, it’s just that I know this Buckeye team is pretty fantastic (despite what Mags says) and that they can roll with anyone, regardless of what happened in 2006 and 2007. why is believing that my team can beat another equally unproven team crazy?
and the bye week was the best thing that couldve happened to USC…no chance for a game like the Bucks had.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
This game will be close until Boeckman throws his usual backbreaking INT. Against Illinois it came on the Buckeyes’ last possession. Against LSU, it came midway through the 2nd quarter.
It WILL happen. Just a matter of when. This is a guy who was 16 of 26 for 110 against Ohio. 110! Ohio!

September 8th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
16/26 = 62% = good
Not many yards because Tressel didn’t call many downfield plays, which is his M.O. before big games. Is this hard?
September 8th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
For Spencer’s sanity I am hoping the Browns and Buckeyes both don’t get blown out this weekend.

September 8th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Wasn’t there a Big Ten team in each of the last TWO BCS NC games? I don’t really understand how having a competitor in the National Title game for the last two years is a conference being down… explain that to me.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
I really think OSU simply overlooked Ohio. Tennessee notoriously does that shit and plays down to their competition. the difference is that OSU has the talent and coaching to overlook an inferior team and still win.
it’ll be a one score or less difference and I’m going with USC.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Beanie is going to play. Tressel is going to open up the playbook. The D is much better against ‘traditional’ offenses. OSU by 4.
/extremely hopeful OSU fan
September 8th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
I don’t need to qualify what I said. There is only one MonStUniv.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
USC will cover the 9.5 or 10.5 that it is at now. OSU has too many issues and are not athletic enough for the trojans.
If the buckeyes can limit their TO’s they might be able to keep the game close.
31 – 10 USC
September 8th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
I guarantee the amazing Ohio State defense will give up 30+ points.
\If I’m wrong I promise to admit it
September 8th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Maggs, one team does not validate an entire conference.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Oh, fuuuuck ohio. Don’t feel badly for them. They have LeGlobal, o$u, Browns, Bengals. You are feeling bad for a bunch of fans who have had their shot in 3 BSC NC games out of the first five, Fuck them! If you want to feel bad for someone feel bad for Auburn. Fuck o$u and their WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA fans.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Yeah. What does that have to do with USC-Ohio State?
16 for 110 = 6.875 = Awful.
110 on 26 = 4.23 = Terrible
When you’re losing, you have to throw the ball. And 4 yards per isn’t going to get you back into it. If not for special teams, OSU loses that game.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
@miz
based on that ratinale, The Big Ten is the second best conference in all the land then.

September 8th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
The OU quarterback barely lost the starting job in open competition, so it was not like he was that far behind the starter.
There were very few opportunities for OU to score. The Buckeyes especially in the early series, often give up yardage, but rarely do they lead to points.

Percentage of your bet you pay the bookie on a loss, normally 10%.
$100 bet you lose, you pay $110.
That shit adds up quick and is the reason the bookie always has the edge.

Ok so
Pac Ten = fraud (only USC)
Big 12 = fraud (only OU)
ACC = fraud (fucking nobody)
SEC = #1 (many good teams)
Big Ten = #2 (at least two very good teams)
That is YOUR rationale, one team does not validate a conference.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
UW might as well not even bother to show up either.
and remember this?
September 8th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
I just don’t think USC has the horses on offense to punish USC. I think Wells will play and most likely play well but to think that Wells at 80% (if that) and Todd Boeckman are going to go into SoCal and beat Pete Carroll is too much. USC is just as loaded on defense as OSU and they have more speed and skill on the offensive side. USC 27 – OSU 14
September 8th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
@Tampa Bo/Miz – you’ve never accidentally got some icey hot or bengay on your shit? It’s not that great and lasts for a while. That said, I’ll still take it over sand paper.

September 8th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
@ ill
if that ever happens you neutralize it with lactic acid…aka milk
September 8th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Who would qualify as the other “very good” team?
September 8th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Yeah, and I responded to it. 40 rushing attempts, 28 passing. When you’re losing, you have to throw the ball, which Boeckman didn’t do well enough to lead his team to a W. They got bailed out by special teams. Tressel’s playcalling was limited not out of any sort of pre-big-game strategy, but by his lackluster quarterback’s shortcomings, and his propensity for throwing backbreaking picks when he doesn’t have a lead.
If you can’t get 300 yards of offense against Ohio, how many do you get against USC? 175? 100? 50?
If you need 5 turnovers and a +4 differential to eek out a win, you’d better pray that Sanchez throws 5 picks and none of the SC backs can hold onto the ball.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:44 pm

September 8th, 2008 at 3:46 pm

You r argument was that the Big Ten isnt a good conference when it is. o$u, psu and Michigan (obviously not every year) are routinely in the top 5 at the end of the year. The only othe rconference that can say that is the SEC. That was my whole argument. What the hell are you even talking about? That is fine rationale, nothing wrong with it, but then you also have to say that the Big Ten is the second best conference in football.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:46 pm

I’m not reading too much into that. Yeah it doesn’t look good for them, but you’re right, it’s a small sample size without their best player.
But I have yet to see Todd Boeckman play well against a quality opponent, and this saturday will be the best defense he’s ever seen. So I don’t give the Bucks much of a shot.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
cassino…you’re right about them not being relevant. im more going after your incessant viritol towards the buckeyes.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
I want to know why that flag cost Washington the game? Why can’t their kicker make that extra point? The rule is dumb but the refs call the rules, so they had to throw the flag.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Look all I am saying is this; when you look at the conferences honestly you have to say that the SEC has at least a few teams that are BCS capable every year. That said the Pac Ten = USC and no one. The Big Twelve = OU and Texas… even that is shaky. ACC = garbage (lately) The Big Ten has at leat two teams in it every year and often times it has three that are legit BCS chamions year in and year out. That is all I was trying to say based on your rationale that one team doesn’t make a conference good. You can’t say Michigan isnt a great team, they were ranked #2 all year like 2 years ago and psu finished top 3 a few years back as well.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
No, but I consider an 18 yard 2-pt conversion impossible. It’s very likely that the Huskies would have gone for 2, and anybody who has watched Jake Locker play knows he’s basically unstoppable getting into the endzone from short distances. The Huskies defense might be the worst in the nation. They go to OT, and they probably lose. I’d like to think that Ty would have made the right call and won the game on Locker’s shoulders as they were carrying all the momentum at that point.
The penalty took that chance away. Everyone agrees that it was a terrible call, and I’m past it. I dont know why you guys are bringing it up.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
Ironically, the last time OSU and Ohio U squared off (’99), OU was leading 10-3 at the half. Final score was 43-10 that time around.
For those who didn’t see it, OSU was clearly not tipping their hand for the USC game. Standard Tress Procedure and am just hoping he took a page from Ali with a little rope-a-dope. Giving OU credit, both of their QBs looked damn good. Credit to Solich on bringing in athletes. Shit, on the punt coverage, their gunners got down fast enough that they typically had to stop and wait for Small to catch the ball before they proceeded to hit him. After the OU touchdown on the high snap, tOSU came out the next series with an actual offense and completely picked OU apart, so I think that said alot about the game plan. A Small punt return for a TD and it was game over.
Still, I’m nervous as fuck. Hope it’s a good game.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Couldn’t be more wrong.
Oregon was the best team in the nation last year before Dixon’s injury. And they’ll probably win 10 games this year – with their #1 QB out for the season – again.
Cal is a top 20 team every year barring last year’s collapse.
Arizona State won 10 games last year.
And when the Pac-10 plays the SEC the Pac-10 usually wins.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Still, I’m nervous as fuck.
Why? you already know OSU is gonna lose.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
itll be interesting to see how USC handles the Shoe next year. they’ll play an actual team instead of some shitty ACC team that 75% of the D-1AA could probably beat with a stadium half filled with their own fans.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Was this sarcasm? Because they were a combined 12/34 for 109, 0 TD’s and 4 INTS. Jackson ran the ball well, but he threw 3 of the 4 picks. I would never say that a QB amassing 141 yards of offense and turning the ball over 3 times is damn good.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
@Maggs – based on what you just wrote, I don’t see where there’s a disagreement between us. I said one team does not validate a conference and you gave me a bunch of conferences with one good team. therefore, those conferences would not be validated as conferences with quality football. this is why arguing with you is like arguing with my wife; in the end, she is usually saying the exact same thing as me but just wants to be argumentative.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

I said one team does not validate a conference based on the example you gave of one team from the Big Televen being in the NC game for two straight years. read what you said and what I said and please tell me where I said the Big Televen wasn’t a quality conference.
actually, reread the quotes and consider the “tell me” part to be rhetorical. I’m done with this argument.

Jesus Christ I hate almost every one of you.

That being said, thus far, it seems the Big 10 is better this year than in year’s past due to PSU and Illinois looking pretty good.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
2002. They lost by 7 AT #6 K State.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Maggs, I’m sure you can also find “quality football” in the Sun Belt Conference, but most of us just aren’t interested in them or the Big 10. That’s just how it goes.

cassino…im glad games from 2006 have some bearing on a game taking place in 2008 considering USC is going to be without booty, moody, steve smith, dwayne jarrett, fred davis, keith rivers, sedrick ellis, etc.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Spence-They have dirty Sanchez.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
USC is something like 23-1 against nonconference opponents since 2003, and undefeated at home, and they’ve played teams like Arkansas, Auburn, Notre Dame, Michigan, Illinois and Oklahoma. Not exactly cupcakes.
They DON’T lose to non-Pac-10 teams.

I have no rooting interest in the USC/OSU game, but looking at it from a matchup perpsective, I’m not exactly sure where OSU has an advantage. Like, anywhere. Plus they’re on the road. They could surprise me, but I’m just not seeing it.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
cassino…that’s totally true, as colin cowherd likes to trumpet on an everyday basis, but when do you stop and consider that history means dick in college football? anything past a year or two is irrelevant as there is so much turnover year to year. what does anything that happened in the 80’s against the SEC have to do with OSU’s current inability to stop them?
September 8th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
and that is nothing more than an example to prove the point earlier in my comment…don’t read into it.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
EEEEEEES EEEEEEEEEY CEEE…ahh fuck it.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Except that it does the opposite of proving your point…
Are you embarrassed to admit that you listen to Cowherd? You should be.
That history is NOT irrelevant, because it’s due to one man: Pete Carroll. That’s what HE does as coach of the Trojans, and last I checked, he still is. Yes, there is turnover in college football. But the way USC recruits, their All-Americans are being replaced by All-Americans. History it may be, but some of it is constant.

“Vig” is short for “vigorish“, no?
September 8th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Well, shit. I shouldn’t have been on the golf course today. You mean to tell me that my tickets to the game this weekend are useless? I guess maybe I’ll show up to the Coliseum just in case Ohio State does too.
In all seriousness, if the line is now 10, that will likely be the first time in at least 15 years that Ohio State will be 10+ point dogs.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
eh, there’s worse out there. and everyday is a reach considering i dont listen at work.
and history is irrelevant, regardless of who the coach is and the recruits. they’re different players and that’s who decides games. hell, Texas replaced an All-American at QB, VY, with another All-American at QB, Colt McQueer, and it’s pretty obvious they skipped a beat.
the only thing that’s a constant is the recruiting-service stars next to these kids’ names. other than that, it means jack shit.

Wally…where’d you golf at?
September 8th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Westchester in Canal. Had free passes. Little is better than playing free golf when its 75 and sunny…
September 8th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
You’re absolutely right. USC would have rebounded from the 90’s (when they were the only Pac-10 school to never be in the top-10 at some point) and become the dominant team in college football regardless of who their coach was. Pete Carroll has 0 to do with the string of Pac-10 championships and 2 national titles. Those players with 4 and 5 stars next to their names? They weren’t really that good.

Colt McCoy > Boeckman
/pure, uncut fact
September 8th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
wow, nothing like an ohio state post to rile some folks up. we’ll be doing, hopefully, an OSU-USC post each day this week.
September 8th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
If I can get signed in from my BlackBerry, I’ll give you an update from the parking lot outside of the stadium at about 5 pm EST. I should still be sober at that time, so it should seem semi-lucid for all except Maggs. He thinks nothing OSU people say is lucid.
September 8th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
OSU 24
USC 20
All the haters can eat a dick
September 8th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
Wally, where are your seats? I finally got mine today. 33 rows up in the corner, not great, but its in the stadium.
September 8th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
O-H!
September 8th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
I am in row 93(!) in section 28. Those are horrible seats from everything I read, but I use the same “In the stadium” term…
