Vince Young’s Fragile Mental State Throws a Middle-of-the-Night Scare into Jeff Fisher* **
NFL September 9th. 2008, 10:45am
That tale in the Tennessean Monday about Vince Young begging out of the Jacksonville game just prior to suffering an injury? It may have gone to another level last night in Nashville, according to WKRN (via Music City Miracles):
According to sources, questions about Young’s state of mind began when the quarterback left his home abruptly at 7:30 p.m. Monday. According to those same sources, Young seemed emotionally down and left his cell phone behind. Titans officials alerted Metro police to be on the lookout for Young’s SUV.
Metro police officers and Tennessee Titans Coach Jeff Fisher gathered at Baptist Sports Park around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday to meet with Vince Young after trying to locate him.
Whoa. Would Titans officials have called the police if this wasn’t somewhat urgent? Bumpy last few months for the guy who put together one of the finest college football performances in the last decade in the Rose Bowl win over USC. What, have you forgotten the shirtless photo? When we interviewed him over the phone, he seemed to have it together, and appeared eager about completing his education at the University of Texas. But the report of him wanting to quit Sunday – recall the brief “retire” controversy in May – then getting injured, and now this …
[UPDATE: From Pro Football Talk. Who wants to find this forum PFT speaks of?]
[UPDATE II: Tennessean is on the case.]
[UPDATE III: A skilled tipster has found the forum, which probably has little or no truth to it. But according to police, Young had a gun in his glove compartment.]

the hell is wrong with you, vince? I think you need to sit a few plays out and get your shit together.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:49 am
Care to re-write this sentence, you know, so I could figure out what the hell it means? Out of the game? Out of the city?
September 9th, 2008 at 10:52 am
Who cares about his mental health. That Rose Bowl game was ridiculous.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:52 am
thanks, merk
September 9th, 2008 at 10:52 am
@August – been meaning to tell you I’m enjoying the links. and when the hell did Clay Travis become a Deadspin editor? I’ve been out of the Claynation loop since moving down to Florida, but I didn’t have a freakin’ clue about that!
September 9th, 2008 at 10:53 am
I think it’s time for another TBL/Young sitdown, but don’t ask any hard questions, unless they are about the performance of his shoe.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:54 am
That Rose Bowl Game is the problem.
Now that he’s just average and has to work at it, he’s getting frustrated.
The dude got a 6 on the Wonderlic, I’m not sure he can have a mental state
September 9th, 2008 at 10:55 am
vince young is the worst starting qb in the nfl.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:55 am
I blame it on his shoes. Reebok sucks. He was blazin’ with Nikes at Texas.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Get this man a therapist, now! We’re one QB away from being a great team, and this crap is going on…
September 9th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Vince Young is great! He just wins football games!
Can I please hear more of that so I can continue to laugh? Yes, the Titans won Sunday but not because of Vince Young, because of the ridiculously good defense they have.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Thanks miz… I just wish I had more good stories to link to over the past few days!
when the hell did Clay Travis become a Deadspin editor?
The same day Delurio took over for Leitch
September 9th, 2008 at 10:58 am
He had sex with my Mama!
September 9th, 2008 at 10:59 am
Yes, the Titans won Sunday but not because of Vince Young, because of the ridiculously good defense they have.
Not true at all his rookie year, when our D was horrible and we were winless until he started. But, since the middle of last year he’s been sliding backwards pretty rapidly.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:00 am
I don’t see why he doesn’t just hang ‘em up. No offense to the man, but if he doesn’t want to be there (in the NFL) then why put up the front. Just retire and relax bro. A kid from my high school went in the first round of last years draft and got like 10 mil. I have to be honest with you, if I got 10 mil. I would most likely play out my contract and say “Peace man”. Why get hit when you can not get hit? For the extra 10,000 sq feet on your mansion? No way.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:01 am
VY could come out of this stronger than ever and refocused, but this ‘event’ last night sent a collective groan through Titans fans everywhere… not cool man, not cool.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:03 am
This “event” still isn’t that clear to me. He was upset when he left practice, so they sent the cops to watch after him to make sure he didn’t kill himself or something?
September 9th, 2008 at 11:03 am
Why is everyone on the Jason Campbell sucks bandwagon but Vince Young can still be a savior for the Titans?
September 9th, 2008 at 11:04 am
Problem: Vince Young is a shit QB
Solution: Different position, considering hes a great Athlete.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:04 am
What the hell was VY doing anyways? Getting Drunk and driving around? If so Kerry Collins is pissed he wasn’t invited.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:05 am
@YYSA-Collins isnt pissed he why would he want to hang out with a black guy.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:05 am
More details coming out:

September 9th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Mario > VY
September 9th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Why would Vince Young want to kill himself!?! He has a rookie contract to live for!
\TO’s publicist
September 9th, 2008 at 11:07 am
T.O. thinks VY is just hoping for sympathy.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:08 am
VY is a victim of hype, a la Reggie Bush and soon o be Adrian Peterson. Didanyone catch that piece on Purple Jesus b4 last night’s game? Before the pice,Stu compares Ap’s 8th GAME stats, to those of Jim Brown, Sweetness, and Emmitt, and, based on that, he’s headed to the HOF. Then, in the piece, Ap goes on about as “The Diesel” he wants to punish the defense and hurt them, and that his goal for the season is 2,000 yards. They cut back and Stu Scott is goin’ all Bojangles over him. All I can imagine is Steve Young is sitting in the background, shaking his head, saying ESPN has created another overhyped media monster that will probably flame out. I agree.
As for “VY”, get lost, you’re overrated
September 9th, 2008 at 11:08 am
@cbh
Please get out of my head, sir.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:09 am
Can’t they just let him run the option for a game to see how that works. It’s not like it can get any worse. It must suck to stroke egos all the time.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:10 am
i think it might actually work. lendale and chris johnson in the backfield? hell, it beats throwing to any of those garbage WR’s they have.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:10 am
Obviously comparing AP to Jim Brown is completely crazy, but I highly doubt he will “flame out” That kid is BOSS.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:11 am
it’s for the couple hundred extra acres on your strawberry patch?
September 9th, 2008 at 11:11 am
Just go 5 wide and if no one is open run that bitch. Isnt that what he did at Texas?
September 9th, 2008 at 11:11 am
@nwilson – please get out of my dreams, sir.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:14 am
Why is everyone on the Jason Campbell sucks bandwagon but Vince Young can still be a savior for the Titans?
Folks who didn’t really see much of VY’s rookie year understandably feel this way, but those of us who did are blown away by these past few days… about 2 years ago he was a consummate leader who made highlight worthy, game winning plays. Most Titans fans are really hoping he can get that back.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:14 am
I mean really. more qb draws, qb options at least. That offense is dissmal. If he gets hurt then what? Big deal right? It’s not like he was producing much anyway, so you have collins to step in. Split there time or something. Run vince, throw collins. Line johnson, white, and young on the wr spot, and just mess with peoples minds for awhile. it’s worth a shot at this point I would think.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:15 am
@maggs: My flameout statement is more based on him being like a Gale Sayers (electrifying plays, but hurt too much to be an “all-time great”. Yeah, I know Sayers is in the HOF, but should he be???).
His wanting to “punish” people is just stupid. he needs to stay on the field. And how about getting to the Super Bowl instead of having 2,000 yards as a goal??
September 9th, 2008 at 11:16 am
You know who fucking sucks… Vince Gill
September 9th, 2008 at 11:16 am
With all of my statements being said, there still 1-0 so it’s not desperation time yet.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:16 am
Beat me to it, benji.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:16 am
As a 49ers fan I rarely feel sorry for anyone these days, but if you’re a Titans fan this has really got to suck.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:16 am
I agree with Maggs, although its too early to know what really happened it seems like he really doesn’t enjoy playing the game that much anymore. If that’s the case, take the money you’ve earned and go become a high school coach in Houston. Everyone loves him there
September 9th, 2008 at 11:17 am
Although the Texans look like gold for picking Mario, but nobody wants to talk about that now.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:17 am
The whole call the police thing seemed like much ado about nothing, but the Titans have no one to blame for this shit show but themselves. If they had a competent, veteran QB on their roster (not Kerry Collins) then they wouldn’t have been forced to play VY before he was ready. It’s hard enough for a young QB to have success in the NFL, much less a rookie who was essentially playing sandlot ball at QB at Texas.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:19 am
great minds Nick
September 9th, 2008 at 11:20 am
what if he was holding some weed or had a few beers? i would think Jeff Fisher would regret calling the cops then.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:20 am
With all of my statements being said, there still 1-0 so it’s not desperation time yet.
No joke; you’d think we got killed by the reaction of most fans around here… QB is our only weak unit, and I’ve blasted people for saying it before, but we may be better overall now with Collins because at he can sustain drives even if he can’t get in the end zone anymore.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:22 am
What the fuck is a strawberry patch? I don’t get it?
September 9th, 2008 at 11:22 am
Why wouldn’t he just go hang out in a club with a bunch of sweaty dudes with no shirts?
September 9th, 2008 at 11:24 am
what if he was holding some weed or had a few beers? i would think Jeff Fisher would regret calling the cops then.
True but Hes no good if hes dead. Jeff Fischer is a good guy for not even thinking about that. That is some Bobby Bowden shit.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:24 am
Vince Young insists on being skins in shirts vs. skins pickup basketball.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:26 am
What the fuck is a strawberry patch?
You ever date a red head?
September 9th, 2008 at 11:26 am
I think what’s being forgetten is how complex people can be. The guy came in with immense pressure. Sure he got paid, but pressure is still there. It’s definitely not something to take lightly. He’s definitely a candidate for a two week vacation to the clinic to get his head straight.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:26 am
Why does Tiger Woods keep playing golf? Dude is loaded, he should just go relax. Fucking right wingers and all their “ambition” propaganda.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:27 am
He is beyond awful. He still has plenty of time to turn things around, but it’s not looking pretty.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:28 am
I think he sucks, too, Mike, but don’t neglect his rushing yards and TDs.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:28 am
I am calling Bullshit on Vince Young being called the worst starting QB in the NFL. Look at the offensive talent that Young has had to play with on the Titans. His only true play-maker is a rookie running back. His line is okay but not great. He has had the worst group of receivers in the nfl every year he has been with the Titans. He is not your typical drop back qb but makes a ton of plays with his mobility. All that being said, the guy is obviously semi-retarded (wonderlic of 6 and talking about qutting after throwing a couple of picks) but so are half of the players in the nfl.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:29 am
please, god, no.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:29 am
@Tampa: haha.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:29 am
please see update: Who can find this forum? Can you email me a link?
September 9th, 2008 at 11:29 am
Oh, so they were saying I have a vagina. Wow, I bet reading MLJ is alot like reading the bathroom stall in any high school. Great stuff guys, keep up the great work.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:30 am
He’s definitely a candidate for a two week vacation to the clinic to get his head straight.
So January through July wasn’t a long enough vacation?
September 9th, 2008 at 11:31 am
And forget all that about him needing to get his head right. The guy is playing football. I believe football is a game. He is not performing open heart surgery or serving in the military. He is paid millions to play a game and needs to man up and play and have fun doing it or he needs to move on to something else.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:31 am
Does John Clayton even work? He goes on Mike and Mike this morning and he doesn’t speak at all about this situation and claimed that Young was fine with going back in the game Sunday and Fisher took off his headset so he could hear Young.
What a moron.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:31 am
WTF was that? How was that even called for?
September 9th, 2008 at 11:32 am
@cbh – wasn’t the right kind of vacation….he needs a xanax vacation
September 9th, 2008 at 11:34 am
Hate to break it to you coach k, but he’s an employee that’s paid a lot, an investment. If the team thought enough of him to pay him that much money, then Fisher is probably doing the right thing by ebing concerned about his state of mind. Imagine if Fisher takes the next couple weeks and Young gets his head straight and his game flourishes. It’s a win, win. If fisher says fuck it and dumps him….another team takes the time to help him and he crushes it, fisher gets crucified.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:36 am
maggs, it wasn’t about you having a vagina. Tampa Bo was defining a strawberry patch in a different context. i was referring to your UM graduate friend who quit a real job to pick strawberries.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:36 am
I don’t disagree that Young needs to man up, but none of us know why he is the way he is. Take the time to find out and they may get the best out of him. Doesn’t seem like much of a risk on the team’s part considering how much money they’ve dumped into him.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:38 am
he went to pick grapes, benji. he’s very successful too.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:40 am
Those message board accounts are absurd to the point that Florio should be ashamed (though he has no shame) that he even referenced them… WKRN cameras were there and nothing like what they describe could have possibly taken place. It’s a Colts fan trolling, and that’s it.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:48 am
Here is the thing Merk: If you take that $10M and perform well…all of a sudden an extra $50-$100M becomes available just to continue what you are doing. The game played at that level is how much…Whoever dies with the most wins. Obvious to exception to the rules: Jake Plummer, Heath Shuler, etc. Shuler parlayed into politics. Jake parlayed into a cheerleader, beard and handball career…
September 9th, 2008 at 11:48 am
Wow, a vague refrence about something I commented on, that I didn’t even understand. Comedy gold. I am sure the 2 or 3 commenters who may have actually understood that refrence totally LOL’d all over the place.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:49 am
according to police, Young had a gun in his glove compartment
True, but it was in the glove box with the safety on and there was no ammo in the car.

Also: This isn’t on the front of ESPN yet.

Young had a gun in his glove compartment
Him and everyone else.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:53 am
Benji: I totally burned Maggs.
Nick P: Dude, sick burn man totally.
Benji: I am going to go write about the Brewers for my audience of five.
Nick P: I will read it and comment about it later. After my nightly passage from Moneyball.
Benji: Well of course, I love you.
Nick P: I love you too.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:54 am
Why would it be on ESPN? He had a gun in his glove compartment that wasn’t loaded, which I’m sure is always there. Sounds like he just went out for some fresh air and people flipped out.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:59 am
Dumbest fucking thing I’ve read since the post about the fucking Georgia highlight.
September 9th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
Cracker, people may have flipped out, but when your head coach is calling the police because he is worried about his QB’s frame of mind that is very newsworthy.
September 9th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
Yea I heard hes got a bomb strapped to his balls and he called selvin young and told him he loves him.
September 9th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
Why would Tiger Woods retire anyway? Most guys retire so they can play more golf, not less…
September 9th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
Vince must have gotten sick of all the Favre-slurping on MNF.
September 9th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
@jaywashere
I’m guessing Tiger would retire to have more sex with his Swedish bikini model wife. Just a guess.
September 9th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Fucked up story about Vince Young. I wonder if Kerry Collins is cracking open a cold one right now
September 9th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
ESPN has it now. They just can’t source message boards and call it a day.

He pours some out and says “this is for my ni**a Vince, is that racist?”
September 9th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
@Maggs: Sorry for the sick burn, dude. It was epic gnarliness.
September 9th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
Coop, that’s mean but funny as hell…
September 9th, 2008 at 12:11 pm

Teams need to hire private security to watch over their problem children, and Lojack their cars. Like benji said, “What if…?” You only call the cops if the guy just committed a crime against a team player of staff & you want him caught.
September 9th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
I lol’d at the Nick/Benji exchange. +1 Mags
September 9th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
