Jeff Malone Would Never Do This to Gilbert
NFL September 17th. 2008, 1:00pm
Brian Mitchell enjoyed a solid but unspectacular NFL career. Despite impressive stats, he rarely is discussed among the all-time return men, like Dante Hall, Mel Gray, Via Sikahema, Eric Metcalf and Devin Hester. Now, he’s co-hosting a sports talk radio show in DC alongside John Thompson, and for some reason, Mitchell’s decided to make charismatic, oft-injured Redskins RB Clinton Portis a target.
Portis went on the show this week, and for a moment, things seemed tense (listen to it all here):
Portis: We got some haters, and there’s one on this show. He’s so caught up in whatever I do and being negative about it. Man, I really want to know what’s going on….There’s a man on your show who can’t keep my name out of his mouth, it’s always the negativity.”….
Mitchell: “The next time I see you, I’ll step to you.”
Portis: “I’m a grown man, you’re a grown man….All your comments over the years, bro, they’re really starting to add up.”
Though the two later mellowed out, we suspect it is because of notes that were handed to Mitchell and Portis. Mitchell got one that said, “You know he went to the U, right? Fall back, son.” Portis received one that said, “Play it cool. We’ll catch him napping out in the open. Nobody clowns you like that.”

This is gold.
CP has been doin work this year. Hes a beast.

Jeff Malone should clown Gilbert. Your boy got ANOTHER knee surgery. He really screwed the Wiz… or should I say they screwed themselves.
(now TBL can run and sob- he’s out ’til December)
September 17th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
Brian trying to hold on pretty tight to his football days. Sounds like men being men. You got a beef, we’ll talk about it later, then everything will be cool.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
Huh, where the hell are you reading that Jesus?
September 17th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK, stupid fuckign Wizards re signing fucking Gilbert I am an injured fuck all the time Arenas.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
Gilbert news is on the radio, i haven’t seen a link
i need a new NBA jersey …
September 17th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Probably nitpicking, but I think Mitchell, as a kick and punt return man, owns all of the yardage records, no? Doesn’t that mean he had a little better than a “a solid but unspectacular NFL career”?
Also: why sould a guy who made a living returning punts for 13 years be scared of Clinton Portis? You have to be tough to do that job as long as Mitchell did it.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
that last paragraph is some funny shit. good stuff TBL.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Here TBL.

TBL, get a Paul Pierce jersey. Maybe he wouldn’t have punked you out if he saw you were repping his jersey.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
the only thing Sikahema ever did was beat canseco’s ass
September 17th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
What a great way to treat people, . I think he lifted that from the Dale Carnegie course on how to win friends…
September 17th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Dante Hall is an all-time great? Whoa.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Champ Bailey >>> Portis. The Broncos pulled off a steal when they dealt portis to the skins.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
@ benji- plus Pierce is actually clutch:

September 17th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
@August - agree or disagree?
September 17th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
TBL, don’t know who’ve you’ve been listening to, but practically EVERYTIME the best return men in history are discussed, B-Mitch’s name comes up. I mean, hell, I googled best return men nfl history, and 8 of the first 10 entries involved Mitchell. Plus, you left off Billy White Shoes Johnson, who is always included as well. I’ve NEVER heard Vai Sikahema’s name mentioned in this discussion…which was stand to reason considering he only scored 3 return TDs in his career, just one more than Kardashian’s boyfriend.
Now, as to what the beef between Mitchell and Portis is, it’s no secret. Portis is pissed about Stephon Heyer starting over Jon Jansen, and he ran his mouth about last week. Mitchell was on the air prior to Sunday’s game, and said Clinton should shut up and be a team player. I guess Portis took offense.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Champ Bailey >>> Portis. The Broncos pulled off a steal when they dealt portis to the skins.
Totally disagree with this. Bailey has done shit.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
@KC: I agree. What the fuck, Dante Hall had like 1.5 good years? He’s a joke.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Disagree all you want. You are wrong. Broncos may have not done shit as a team but the value of Bailey outweighs the value of Portis.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
OT:
Brad Childress finally comes to his senses.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Tampa- Bailey is second in the league in interceptions since 2000. Where as I think he is on the downside of his prime, he has been pretty damn good.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Fucking Hilarious
September 17th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Quck, name a return man to get a Super Bowl MVP!
Desmond Howard > Dante Hall … and many others.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Mike great news I am now picking up Berrien or and Rice.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Coach K said: “Champ Bailey >>> Portis. The Broncos pulled off a steal when they dealt portis to the skins.”
Really?…because since the trade both teams have an equal # of both playoff appearances (2) and playoff victories (1).
I hardly think it was a steal.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
Most Kick Return Yards:
1. Brian Mitchell 14014
2. Allen Rossum 10520
Most Kick Return Td
1. Sayers, Gray, Hall 6
2. Mitchell 4
Most Punt Return Yards
1. Mitchell 4999
2. Metcalf 3708
Most Punt Return TD
1. Metcalf 10
2. Mitchell 9
September 17th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
Are you in some bizzaro fantasy league that rewards points for not catching the ball? Gus Frerotte ain’t the answer.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
“@KC: I agree. What the fuck, Dante Hall had like 1.5 good years? He’s a joke.” Nick P.
He was awesome for those 1.5 years, but then he decided he’d rather tap dance after catching the ball than run. He was booed constantly his last two years in KC.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
he’s NOT? he had an incredible run from 02-05 where he was the best in the game, i believe.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
Ha - no, he’s not. But is he worse than TJAx? Doubtful.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
yes, Mitchell had great stats. that was mentioned.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
I also like to cite to the statistic that Bailey has yielded more TDs of plus 40 yds than any other NFL CB in the last 10 yrs.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
dwaltlhi your Georgia bias sickens me. They would be alot better with Portis. A CB just doesnt have the Value of a Pro Bowl RB. Denver just bought into their offiensive beliefs that anyone can rush for a 1,000 yards in denver and we dont need CP. Which may be true but Portis>Bailey.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
Devin Hester > Everyone else.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
This is like asking if you’d rather get shot or stabbed.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
Coach K, that trade was fair for both sides, Portis hasn’t been a bum for the Skins.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Within 5 minutes, I found 8 bloggers’ lists of best return men in NFL history…Mitchell wasn’t any lower than 3rd of any of those lists.
Hardly ever mentioned, indeed.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
How do the numbers of Portis’ replacements in Denver compare to Portis numbers in Washington? I’ll bet very close.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
@Chelsea: That’s not the comparison you’d want to make.
He went from a great running environment to an average-to-poor running environment.
You’d want to know the numbers Portis would have reasonably expected to put up in Denver versus his replacement.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
miz: great breakdown! I definitely agree that that they’re too young to win in the West right now, but this year should say a lot about whether coach Ivaroni was worthy of the hype he had before coming to Memphis… I’m hoping they can improve to 35 wins, but that’s probably the best case scenario. The only way they do better is if Mike Conely explodes and Rudy takes the next step and becomes an All-Star.
At least this is a definite rebuilding year, rather than another fire-sale year…
September 17th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Seriously who would you rather have in fantasy Portis or Mitchell(in his prime)?
September 17th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
what no primetime on this list?
and to compare Portis and Bailey is stupid. Compare Portis to what Mike Anderson did after he left. Or Tatum Bell. Or selvin Young. Or Ron Dayne
September 17th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Sorry, meant to post that elsewhere…
September 17th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Portis’ first two seasons in DEN were incredible.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
“How do the numbers of Portis’ replacements in Denver compare to Portis numbers in Washington? I’ll bet very close.”
Other than 05…not really.
Portis’s last yer was 03.
2003: 2629 yds, 20 td
2004: 2333, 13 td
2005: 2539, 25 td
2006: 2152, 12 td
2007: 1957, 10 td
September 17th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Portis with Broncos in 2002 and 2003
3100 total rushing yards and 29 touchdowns
Portis with Redskins in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007
4500 total rushing yards and 34 touchdowns
Broncos got his two most productive years and then dealt him for one of the top shut down corners in the league
September 17th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Portis>Mike Anderson. Or Tatum Bell. Or selvin Young. Or Ron Dayne
September 17th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Above post referred to a comparison of Portis in Denver vs. his replacements. What Portis did in Wash is kind of irrelevant for comparisons’ sake…as Tampa also pointed out above.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Champ Bailey >>> Portis. The Broncos pulled off a steal when they dealt portis to the skins.
Totally disagree with this. Bailey has done shit.
The kicker in that trade was the 2nd Rnd pick that came with Champ to Denver. The Skins are dumbasses for throwing that in there.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Again, Coach K…he’s such a shut-down corner that he’s yielded more 40+ yd TD passes than any corner in the lague in the last 10 yrs.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
Jay V
+1 Point Set Match.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
@illformula…agree about the foolishness of the 2nd rd pick being included (that pick became Tatum Bell, actually). The Skins like to give away picks, that’s for sure.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
I disagree here. It is much easier to find a 1,000 yard or greater running back, than a corner back with Champ Bailey’s ability. They are 3 or 4 running backs that come out of college every year, that can at least approach Portis’s ability. The same cannot be said for corner backs.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
@August - thanks for reading it.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Jay V - I agree. The trade really ended up being close to equal. Both teams got good players and in turn, paid them hefty salaries.
Portis has been catching a lot of shit from the local fan base here lately and I think it’s starting to eat at him. Personally, I think it could be a lot worse. They guy plays his ass off and his mouth is minimal compared to most of the outspoken guys in the league. Skins fans are just ridiculous in nature.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
@slcbuckeye - but he wasn’t a 1,000 yd rusher in Denver, he was much more. And to say that you can draft 3 to 4 RBs in any given draft who can produce near what he can is misleading. They may be able to approach his rushing numbers, but none of them can do that and be as good at pass protection as he is.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
I think the best way to look at the trade is as such…if the trade was never made, I believe the Broncos would have more than 1 playoff win in the past 4 years, and I don’t believe the Skins would even have a playoff appearance. It’s really that simple.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
So the Broncos took a minor hit to their rushing yards and in return, picked up Champ Bailey. I hate Denver, but I’d say that worked out pretty well for them.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
I believe the Broncos would have more than 1 playoff win in the past 4 years, and I don’t believe the Skins would even have a playoff appearance. It’s really that simple.
This is true.
September 17th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
There can trades where both teams win, that is the case here. Bailey wasn’t going to resign with Washington, Portis wasn’t going to resign with Denver, hence the trade.
September 17th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
@Chelsea…worked out well for Denver? 1 playoff win in 4 seasons is working out well?
And while rushing yards may only be a minor reduction, rushing TDS have been a major reduction.
September 17th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Denver O-line>Washington O-line
September 17th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
I agree with Jay V’s assessment. Although the trade becomes much more even when you consider that the Skins added a 2nd rd pick with Portis.
September 17th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
@ Jay V: He’s a INT corner. He’s going to go for the INT rather than play it safe and stop completions. It’s all or nothing.
September 17th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
*with Bailey
September 17th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
It is impossible to determine if you are right or wrong, but I think why the Broncos have not won more than one play-off game in the past 4 years is Jake Plummer stunk at the end, and Cutler has not been ready to lead a play-off team until maybe this year.
It was an interesting trade, a type rarely seen in sports today.
September 17th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
@rockstar- champ had 3 Int’s last year
September 17th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
@Rockstar…I don’t disagree with you at all…and i think that’s an overrated trait. What is the relative scoring value of an interception vs. being burned for a TD?
September 17th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
In 4 yrs in Denver Plummer was 39-15-0 Thats real shitty (lost 3.75 games a year)
Cutler has not been ready to lead a play-off team until maybe this year.
This is the year.
September 17th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
@ Jay V, you got a link to the 40+ yd TD stat? Would like to see who else is on the list.
September 17th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
He was shitty enough to lose his job to Cutler. At the end, it was clear the Broncos could not be successful with Plummer at quarterback.
September 17th, 2008 at 2:33 pm

September 17th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
They played part of the interview last night on ComcastSportsNet. Great to hear. Mitchell has always been critical of the ‘Skins since he has been on the radio. It is great to hear, instead of the constant slurping by other folks at that station and by fans. He had his own shown for a while there, but then he got booted to JT’s show. JT is only good for b-ball on his show, everything else Mitchell and Al Koken. Those two actually talk about other stuff than the ‘Skins 24/7/365.
Is Mitchell a HOFer?
