Gilbert Arenas to Remain Dapper, Sidelined
NBA September 18th. 2008, 2:30pm
Three knee surgeries on the same knee. In 17 months. Think he’ll be the same player in 2009 (this December talk is hopeful; the last time he returned too quickly, it resulted in another surgery) as he was in 2006, when he was among the league’s top scorers and an offensive machine? After investing $111 million in him three months ago, the Wiz sure as hell hope so.
Obvious question: While there’s no doubt this is a better team with Arenas, 43-39 without their best player was good for 5th in the East. So should (could?) the Wiz have tried to move Arenas and bolster their offensively-challenged interior? (For the stat-mongers: Bottom half of the league in FG percentage, FT’s attempted, and rebounding).

Yes.
I changed my mind on this (am I allowed to do that, I hope I am not held to the Peter King standard). I was all about re signing Gil, but he really wore on me last year, his constant talking and actual lack of playing. The Wizards keep foolishly holding onto 2006 when they were like 29-23 and in first in the East, they think the core they have with Butler, Jamison, and Arenas when healthy can compete with the top teams in the East. They can’t, because of the lack of post play, no team is winning a championship with Brendan Haywood and Etan Thomas at center.
They should have blown the team up after last season, and they shouldn’t have given 111 million to a guy who hasn’t been injury free in 2 years.

Orlando will have a nice head start on the division lead. thanks Gil

any basketball post should make Irish happy.
September 18th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
by a nose!
September 18th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Irish, did you watch D Ho in the Olympics? I didn’t see it too closely but things I have been reading from basketball guys are that D Ho made a less than impressive showing and his stock slipped in the eyes of some.

Agent 0 has a great Agent
September 18th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
@cbh- Chris bosh got more noise/press than D howard. Thats okay. Chris Bosh remembers what happened when he played Dwight in the playoffs and so do i.
September 18th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
So he might slip in the draft?
September 18th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
you must be trying to antagonize. no way do you believe this?
September 18th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
11/10 – Oden put a 30/20 on D-Ho. Book it.
September 18th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
cbh basketball guy = Bill Simmons
I for one think Arenas will be fine. I mean in the sport he plays he doesn’t have to run around on hard surfaces and make quick moves and jump a lot. His knee will be Okey Dokey.

@clown- do your homework. Look at Portlands games before they play Orlando on 11/10. Oden is going to face Shaq/Amare,Okur, Yao, Al jefferson, and Dwight Howard all in the same week. He will banged up and most likely hurt by the time Howard kills him.
oh and Clown, your Mavs need to learn Josh howard a few things
September 18th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
learn? wow. that is supposed to be teach. hello ^^^^^
September 18th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Which basketball guys? And do those basketball guys remember Tim Duncan in 2004?

I don’t try to antagonize Irish, he knows that, and why wouldn’t I believe it?
Wow, I guess I can’t ask a question about Howard, all hail Dwight Howard

Good article from Jeff Pearlman on espn. How had I never even heard of that guy?
September 18th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Roman, he is one of the guys I read, and whatever anyone thinks of him, he knows his shit when it comes to basketball.
September 18th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
500 team with him, 500 team without him. Lose to the Cavs in the playoffs with him, lose to the Cavs without him.
September 18th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Hush, jealous Romo hater.
September 18th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
How had I never even heard of that guy?
You must have lived under a rock when the John Rocker story exploded.

\Angered, but he’s right
September 18th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
all hail Dwight Howard
bow down when he comes to your town
September 18th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
I think he’s good but let’s stop pretending like he is a Hall of Famer and his skills can’t be questioned.
September 18th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Lyman Bostock. Not Jeff Pearlman. Although I did live under a rock back then.
September 18th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
Lyman Bostock, who the hell is that? The story was written by Pearlman.
September 18th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Irish, “learn” was funnier than “teach”. I just figured you were dumbing it down to make fun of Clown’s illegal alien, English as second language inferiority.

who?
September 18th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Ahhhhhhhhh, I’m an idiot, got it now.
September 18th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
who?
Dwight Howard
September 18th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Ugh. Must I? The story is about Bostock. It was written by Pearlman. I was saying that I can’t believe I had never heard of Bostock.
/sorry I brought it up.
September 18th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Happy, read #29
September 18th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
D-Ho needs to knock up a few more cheerleaders before we talking about his Hall of Fame credentials.
September 18th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
@cbh- i know. Brandon Haywood is an all star and Hall of Famer and his skills cannot be questioned
September 18th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Rodney Stuckey, bitches!
September 18th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Irish, this is what I mean, no one can knock your boy and it’s ridiculous. Did I once say Haywood was good, no, so why bring that up? Howard hasn’t done anything in the league to earn the respect people give him here. He is good but everyone acts like he is a God, he is still young, he still has room to improve.
September 18th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
@cbh- what is your point? ARe you trying to make a case for someone else to hold the crown of Best Center in the NBA? if so, who? and who acts like Howard is a god besides me on here?
September 18th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
D-Ho needs to knock up a few more cheerleaders before
i hope you have new material for Ballin ‘09
September 18th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Ever since you started hyping him up on here, others have joined in on it, I guess to suck up to you.
My point is, Howard can still improve, me implying that shouldn’t lead to 4 or 5 people jumping on me like it’s asinine for me to think that.
September 18th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
@cbh- i could tell you were a little upset by people taking your comment out of context. Relax. Take my advice. Go outside and yell as loud as you can. It helps. and to think people suck up to me on here is funny.
September 18th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Kevin Duckworth>Dwight Howard
September 18th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
CBH..I am a Simmons guy as well, but that was the one place I saw the whole Howard is not as good as people think thing…just tell me when you are done Reviewing the World Champion New York Football Giants schedule and finding me all those losses you seem to think are coming.
Eddy Curry>>>>Dwight Howard

September 18th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Ok, just reviewed it. They will have an incredible season, they will start 7-0 and then end the year on a 9 game losing streak.
As an aside, didn’t they do that one year, like in the 90’s? They started 3-0, lost 7 in a row and then won six in a row to end the year?
September 18th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
DHo could benefit from a better PG who can get him more dunks. He is kind of out of place in O towns offense because he does not move well without the ball, but I guess he can make up for it with O rebounds and putbacks. He really should work on his FT shooting as this will increase his overall value as a player dramatically. I would rather Dwight than Amare.
September 18th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
1994 with Dave Brown at QB. Simms and LT retired. lost 7 in a row, but still finished 9-7. but go ahead and compare that to the Super Bowl Champs and Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning.
September 18th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Wasn’t comparing that at all, was asking a question, Jesus Chris you’re pissy today Sparty.
September 18th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
i am? please show me where i pissed…
September 18th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
D Ho comment, you jumped on, trying to start something with me and Irish. I asked Roman a question about the Giants, you jumped on that.
September 18th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
i thought we bullshitted in here about sports. we poke at each other, it’s ok. i never get mad.

I’m with cbh49er: Howard gets way too much hype here. He’s good, he’s an all-star, but he’s not close to being a top 5 player in the league. Best center? OK, fine. But that’s not saying much. Personally I’d take Yao Ming if he’s healthy. And if you could put Amare at C (which he was before Shaq), I’d take him over 2 Dwights.
But there is no one else I’d rather throw a lob to when I drive the lane and command a second defender, leaving him wide open. So he’s got that going for him.
