Random Pre Pre-season NCAA Hoops Watch: UAB
College Basketball September 24th. 2008, 4:15pm
The Blazers very likely won’t win the National Title this year – but if George Mason can reach the Final Four, why not these guys? – but might win Conference USA. Mike Davis is building a nice little program down there – amazingly, the No. 2 ranked kid in the 2009 high school class has committed to UAB. Why we like them this year: Four seniors, including one of the top forwards in the country (Robert Vaden – imagine a smaller Jamal Mashburn), four of their top five scorers are back, a difficult early schedule that includes the NIT Tip-off, Louisville, pesky Butler, and Cincinnati, and the best team in C-USA, Memphis, lost its best three players. Last year UAB was 23-11. We’re thinking 25 regular season wins and a four seed in the NCAA tournament.

Yeah they’re good, but where do you see that kid as the #2 recruit for 2009?

Mike Davis took Indiana to a national title game.
GMU, FINAL FOUR 06!!!!!

What’s the saying? Something about a blind squirrel and a nut… Riiiight.

Mike Davis took Indiana to a national title game.
And lost with Bobby Knights guys sorta like Weis and Willingham. Mike Davis sucks.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
I guess they are alike in the sense that the guy who took over did better with the other person’s guys.

Re: Matt Bryant: I had to (try to) interview him once for a story on Bucs special teams, and he just sort of brusquely walked away from the field rather than give a couple of minutes to a student journalist there with Orlando Sentinel reporters, and I was told then that was par for the course for him.
But it’s very, very sad for anyone to lose a child, so my heart goes out to him.
Also, if UAB couldn’t put the boot on the throat of Memphis last year in a home game, why would this year be different?

UAB fans are a bunch of lowlifes. I hope Memphis stomps the shit out of UAB this year

From this vantage point, the Detroit Lions are halfway there.
FoxSports.com reported this morning that Matt Millen is no longer the Lions’ president/general manager. However it came about — firing, resignation, mutual decision — Millen’s departure was beyond necessary if the franchise has any hope of building a playoff contender.
^^ What is up BigLead!!! I guess Esspen is finally giving credit out

Mike Davis…what a joke
sent recruiting letter to Mike Conley addressed to Dominic James
that guy could have all 5 stars and still wouln’t matter – he called in sick to a conference game
Bob Vaden is the assasin though
September 24th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
After living through the Mike Davis years on campus at IU, this team will not win 25 games. The guy belongs in a top recruiter spot at a good school, not the head coach.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
Vaden is a beast. He will single handedly win 2-3 games for UAB that they have no business winning.
He SHOULD become a lethal threat in the Association due to his unlimited (literally) range.

Sleeper of the year is VT and will be in the top 15 at some point of the season. VT beat the pants off of UAB in the burg.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
He will smoke and eat his way out of the league. Dude is a lazy ass.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
UAB my ballsack.
I’m so hungry I’ve been reduced to eating electrolyte chews. Fuck me.

I can’t wait for college hoops. The only thing better is baseball.

Where’s the fuckin’ protein, mom?!?

I also spent my undergrad in Bloomington for the begining of the Davis years and the man did help bring a final 4 run my senior year, but he is still rotten. A good man but just a miserable coach.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Vaden is reaching Bill Brasky like heights in the comments here.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
+1 Sean Jean.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Chris Wright of Dayton did as well last week.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
4 seed? That’s crazy talk.
UAB in the 7-10 range, out in round of 32 or 16. Maybe, if all breaks right, they sneak into the final 8.
The small conference teams to watch are Davidson (obviously) and Siena. Siena returns 4 starters and pwned Vandy in the opening round last year.

Did you guys hear about Matt Millen? I guess he’s out. Here’s a link.
