Collison over Ty Lawson? Really?
College Basketball October 3rd. 2008, 4:15pm
Really liked Doug Gottlieb’s opening tale about Iowa State, Larry Eustachy and Jamaal Tinsley. His list of top point guards in the college basketball? Not as much. But when the topic is subjective, nobody’s wrong! Problem is, the definition of a point guard in college hoops is fluid – Stephen Curry is a two guard who isn’t only playing point to help the team, but surely his NBA stock (sadly, it won’t help). Gottlieb’s Top 10 are tucked behind the Insider wall, but we posted them after the jump. Our list follows his:
1. Darren Collison, UCLA:
2. Patrick Mills, Saint Mary’s:
3. Ty Lawson, North Carolina:
4. Jonny Flynn, Syracuse:
5. Jrue Holiday, UCLA:
6. A.J. Price, UConn:
7. Eric Maynor, VCU:
8. Stephen Curry, Davidson:
9. Curtis Jerrells, Baylor:
10. Greivis Vasquez, Maryland:
Collison, while key to UCLA, got rave reviews last year mostly because he was surrounded by two NBA lottery picks in Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook. Good luck this year, kid. If we’re drafting point guards to run a college team, here’s our order (we left Curry out simply because he has never actually played PG in college):
1. Ty Lawson, UNC – Better than Collison from the field, and a much better passer. The consummate college PG in our opinion.
2. Eric Maynor, VCU – Criminally underrated, and everyone knows he’s the only serious threat on his team.
3. Patrick Mills, St. Mary’s -Looked awesome at the Olympics.
4. AJ Price, Connecticut – Love this kid’s game, and if he’s healthy, he’ll be the reason UConn wins it all.
5. Greivis Vasquez, Maryland – We think he might be the best NBA prospect on this list after Maynor.
6. Darren Collison, UCLA – He can prove us wrong by having a banner year without Love and Westbrook.
7. Jonny Flynn, Syracuse – A bit surprised to hear he’s the best point guard in the country, but perhaps we just haven’t seen enough. Shoots a bit much for our liking.
8. Curtis Jerrells, Baylor – Would have been nice to have seen him dominate the Texas guards last year – except that he didn’t.
9. Tyrese Rice, Boston College – A third score-first lefty in this batch?
10. Manny Harris, Michigan – A bit undervalued since he plays on a garbage team, but having him on my Fantasy hoops team forced me to watch him a lot.

Gottlieb stole his list from his roommate.

well, that list sucked. you cannot honestly believe there are 10 PGs better than Kalin Lucas.

There’s just one n in Collison, TBL.

theres not enough diarrhea in the world that i could pass that would then satisfy my requirements for unc’s program as a whole to eat my ass, it still wouldnt be dirty enough for them
lawson has never scared me though, and its not like hes playing with fucking walk ons

Flynn had to shoot last year because of the Rautins and Devendorf injuries killing their 3 point shooting. Only Greene and Flynn could make one last year.
This is the year to get a handle on how good Flynn is going to be. The fact that he played 38 minutes a game as a freshman and led the team can only make him better this year.

and i think nolan smith would be on this list if someone did the world a favor and knee capped paulus

Collison is 51% from 3 (last year) to Lawson’s 36%
I think that’d be a better judge of who’s a better shooter, no?
October 3rd, 2008 at 4:30 pm
53%

NickP-get out of here with your facts.

nick – and from the field?
lawson > Collison

good call on that kid Lucas. looked OK if memory serves late last season
October 3rd, 2008 at 4:35 pm
so by your logic brendan haywood is the greatest shooter of all time
October 3rd, 2008 at 4:35 pm
and remember that Lucas was a frosh being forced to give up time to Neitzel.

It’s a tossup between Haywood, Shaq, and Eddy Curry. Oh and Tyson Chandler. Those kids can flat out shoot.

Don’t forget Chris Dudley

Hey mole, I was sitting at RDU waiting for my plane last week, and started listening in on David McClure’s phone conversation…apparently Plumlee is a legit 6′10″ and is tearing it up in the pick up games. McClure also complained about the captains pushing people to practice every day, which was kinda ironic because I couldn’t remember McClure’s name until it was paged overhead, instead referring to him as “sucky player that is always injured” in my head.

Mole – Paulus was the best 3 point shooter on the team by a large margin.

30% from 3 is awful in college. 4.5 TOs per game is dreadful. Vasquez is a joke.

hopefully thats the case. his younger brother mason who has committed for next year is supposed to be a freak and can rebound like crazy, something that team has been missing since nerve tonic shelden left
hes a good shooter but i dont think hes a good point guard personally. i cringe when he has the ball coming up court in a clutch situation
October 3rd, 2008 at 5:39 pm
Flynn is going to explode this year, he had to shoot a lot lost year because other than Greene they didn’t have any one that could score. Won’t be the case this year.
October 3rd, 2008 at 6:20 pm
No Sherron Collins?
October 3rd, 2008 at 6:22 pm
The thing I like about Lawson is his toughness. He gets nicked up, and you know that eventually he’ll be back on the court and giving it his some.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Jrue Holiday quickly becomes a much better player than Collison, but I’m guessing Gottlieb is thinking he’ll be playing the 2 for the majority of his minutes which is a safe bet.
I don’t see any of these 10 guys (except for Holiday) being lottery pick worthy though. The point guard class in next year’s draft is going to be mighty thin. It’s almost entirely dependent on Holiday and Brandon Jennings.

Chris Lowe from UMass would eat half that list for breakfast, shit them out, and then run circles around them on the court.
