Yardwork: Johan Santana Earns His Salary in One Start
Baseball September 28th. 2008, 12:07pm
Mets 2, Marlins 0: Okay, that might be a stretch, but Santana was dominant in a complete game three hitter. He struck out nine and lowered his ERA to 2.53. In so doing, Marlins rookie John Baker showed he has a career in headline writing, “What’s the headline going to be tomorrow? Is he the ‘Shea-vior?‒ Brilliant. The Mets are guaranteed a tie of the Wild Card (at least) with a win today.
Cubs 7, Brewers 3: That Mets guarantee is due to the fact that Ben Sheets got beat in his return by the Cubby B Team. Sheets gave up five hits and four runs in two 1/3. His counterpart Ted Lilly gave up a run in six innings to improve to 17-9. The Brewers start CC Sabathia on three days rest later today. I’m waiting for the day when he pitches on zero days rest.
Phillies 4, Nationals 3: The Phillies won the East for the second year in a row after closing out the 9th with a bases loaded double play. It’s the first time the Phillies have made back-to-back postseason appearances since 1980/81. Jamie Moyer gave up a run in six innings to improve to 16-7 and Brad Lidge went 41-for-41 in saves, even after giving up three hits and walk in the 9th.
Royals 4, Twins 2: The Royals are not impressed with you, Minnesota Twins. They’ve won 13 of 15 and leave the Sox with a half game lead. Scott Baker “toes the rubber” for Minnesota today against Brandon Duckworth. As for the Royals, their 18 September wins are the most in the month since 1985 and their eight game road winning streak is the most since their 11 game streak in 1977.
Indians 12, White Sox 6: Javier Vazquez perpetuated the notion that he can’t win important games after giving up seven runs in four 1/3 innings. Today it’s on Mark Buerhle, who opposes Bryan Bullington. The Sox and Tribe start five minutes before the Royals and Twins, at 2:05 ET.
