Sifting Through Saturday’s Carnage
College Football September 29th. 2008, 10:15am
* ESPN’s already projecting every bowl game matchup, and both guys have Alabama in the title game. This feature, this early, may be lamer that Bracketology in the summer.
* The coolest play of the weekend had to be this UNC steal in the end zone at the buzzer.
* As if Georgia’s loss to Alabama wasn’t bad enough, Knowshon Moreno could miss the Tennessee game with a busted elbow.
* If you’re wondering about Oklahoma falling victim to the letdown (USC)/look-ahead (Wisconsin), the No. 1 Sooners travel to 2-2 Baylor Saturday a week before the Red River Shootout. We just sifted through the OU media guide, and the Sooners narrowly beat Baylor in double OT, 37-30, in 2005, but we couldn’t find an instance, dating back to the Barry Switzer era, when the Bears beat the Sooners.
* It’s still early, but 3-2 Clemson has to be the biggest fraud in the country. Tommy Bowden better watch his ass, or he’ll be out of a job if this keeps up. They lose to Wake this weekend, and the Tigers can kiss any ACC title hopes goodbye.
* Bill Murray is on the Texas bandwagon, but we suspect that will last about six days. UT at Colorado Saturday night in Boulder.
* The leading rusher in the country: Connecticut’s Donald Brown (906 yards in five games). The Huskies are on top of the Big East, but perhaps only briefly: trips to UNC and Rutgers loom ahead.
* Yes, Alabama will get get its own post later in the day. Patience, friends.

this will be a great D-II opponent for UGA to play without him and rest him up.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:19 am
but perhaps only briefly: trips to UNC and Rutgers loom ahead.
Rutgers is atrocious and the UNC game will have no bearing on their Big East standing so I think UCONN will be safe.
I called Clemson losing to Maryland.
/And got just about all my other college football predictions wrong.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:19 am
listen…i know everyone here, and everywhere, hates ohio state, but can ANYONE explain to me why they didn’t move up a single fucking spot when four teams above them lost?
sure, they were waxed by USC, but when USC and Florida lose to such awful teams as they did, why do they get the benefit of the doubt? that’s fucking bullshit.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:20 am
coolest play of the weekend
yeah, real cool
September 29th, 2008 at 10:20 am
So the post the other week ranking conferences…The Big 12 has to have gained some traction, 3 of the top 5. Sure they are probably overrated, but at the time, that isn’t bad.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:21 am
Tommy Bowden better watch his ass, or he’ll be out of a job if this keeps up.
Bowden just signed a contract extension in the offseason… I seriously doubt the university raises enough money to fire him, and Phillip Fulmer sees nothing wrong with that.

Blog is updated.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:22 am
here; here!
September 29th, 2008 at 10:22 am
@cbh49er – nice call on Clemson Maryland
Donald Brown is a beast. They will be competitive against UNC (may or may not win), but will dominate Rutgers.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:27 am
Irish, did you bet on Navy/Wake? I was skeptical but you were spot on.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:28 am
tell that to … oh, i dont know, every other coach who has signed a deal and then been bought out?
September 29th, 2008 at 10:30 am
@cbh- two weeks in a row they made me some money
September 29th, 2008 at 10:30 am
I’m a Mizzou fan, but I’d hate to see them in the NC game. Just don’t think they’d match up with an SEC team, and a bad loss could really cast a shadow on what’s developing into a strong program.
Probably won’t happen anyway, since I think Oklahoma’s got their number.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:31 am
Arkansas is flat out terrible. Hard to watch, so I didn’t. Just as hard to listen on the radio. Now we have a pissed off Florida coming to town this weekend. Should be awesome.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:32 am
Also, how is Florida not getting crushed for losing to fucking Ole Miss? I don’t think anyone in the SEC is ever going to be scared of Florida’s running backs as long as Meyer’s offense looks like this… QB draws, end-arounds and screens are the only way they can run the ball against SEC teams, even the bad/mediocre ones.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:34 am
Wisconsin losing to Michigan just shows how tough, top to bottom, this Big Ten really is.
Oh wait, we’re only allowed to do that with the SEC?
September 29th, 2008 at 10:35 am
I was thinking the same thing about Illinois. They’re good enough to be ranked prior to the road game against the team who the AP thinks is top 5 in the country, but not afterwards. Rankings are stupid.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:35 am
cursed…yea, only the SEC…which is why after losing to Ole Miss…AT HOME…the gators are still ranked above OSU who lost to the then no. 1 team on the road.
seriously…that’s bullshit.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:36 am
Guys, Millen is out and Duckworth is dead.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:37 am
@ cleveland
Agree with your larger point, but all that game shows is that either the Badgers aren’t that good or they took the second half off.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:37 am
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3615358
September 29th, 2008 at 10:37 am
Normally I would completely agree, but man that Mich offense is nasty (in a bad way). Badgers crapped that game away.
1. Bama
2. Oklahoma
3. PSU
September 29th, 2008 at 10:38 am
Florida beat Miami and Tennessee on the road. Who has Ohio St. beat?
September 29th, 2008 at 10:38 am
they didn’t take the 2nd half off, that’s the crazy thing.
michigan had something like -20 total yards halfway through the 4th. it was as fluky as it gets.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:38 am
Uh, all the websites do that this early. And at least they have actual results to go on, as compared to bracketology in the summer.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:38 am
Fine Broseph, but can we play that game with Florida or no?
Also, Northwestern not being ranked is a flat-out joke. They’re 5-0 and have faced a similar schedule as Oklahoma.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:38 am
Go Blue! I knew Wisconsin was a tranny team. We are still horrible.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:39 am
Also, Northwestern not being ranked is a flat-out joke. They’re 5-0 and have faced a similar schedule as Oklahoma.
Whole heartedly agree with thag.
Notre Dame deserves more than 3 votes.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:40 am
LSU is better than PSU
September 29th, 2008 at 10:40 am
Fixed for CW.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:40 am
Texas, LSU, Texas Tech, and possibly Penn St. are all going to lose in the next few weeks which means TBL’s pick of BYU in the top five could materialize.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:41 am
and still no mention of Javon Ringer. i quit.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:42 am
PSU is going to get rolled by OSU in columbus.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:42 am
Wake me when they play someone with a pulse, and no, the vastly overrated offensively inept Auburn doesn’t count.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:42 am
where is Jay with his LSU humping?
September 29th, 2008 at 10:42 am
So folks, what do we do when BYU is undefeated and every other team has one loss when everything is said and done?
September 29th, 2008 at 10:42 am
Hey it’s possible, but I seriously doubt it in this case. Most ofthose coaches get Bought out for a year or two worth of salary, not like 5 years (just checked: Bowden is locked-up through 2014).
September 29th, 2008 at 10:43 am
So is T. Pryor gonna be a stronger version of Pat White his passing numbers were terrible but he and Beanie make a great one-two punch in the backfield.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:43 am
he’s blocked at work, he’s around on the weekends.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:44 am
I’m not buying LSU yet. I’d put them outside the top five with Oklahoma, Alabama, Penn St., Mizzou, and Texas ahead of them.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:44 am
we stick them in a BCS game that doesn’t really mean anything to watch them get waxed Hawaii-style. any other questions?
September 29th, 2008 at 10:44 am
@spencer- yeah, i saw that he was all over the place on here this weekend. good to know he is blocked from work
September 29th, 2008 at 10:44 am
jb49ers…pryor had his first meh game. he’s still a true frosh, give him time.
tho TP and beanie in the pistol is a fucking nightmare.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:45 am
Yeah you are right PSU has been through the grind with Temple and Syracuse. Don’t even bring up Oregon St in this humpity bumpity.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:45 am
Also, Northwestern not being ranked is a flat-out joke.
Yes sir agreed. I lived in Evanston for a year great town.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:46 am
hah…nicely done. humpity bumpity.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:46 am
BYU is goint to be more Utah v Pitt than Hawaii dominated by Georgia. They actually play defense.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:47 am
@spencer096 – Triple T baby! Haha.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:47 am
tOregonSU only beat the top-ranked team – why would you even use the Beavers to support your argument?
September 29th, 2008 at 10:47 am
@ cleveland
Be my guest on Florida. They’ve been getting a pass for awhile–they were not a Top 5 team.
As for Northwestern, they probably deserve to be ranked (based on other teams with rankings/votes), but no way they’re a top 25 team. Motor City Bowl, here we come!
September 29th, 2008 at 10:47 am
This BYU team is much better than Hawaii and probably better than Boise St. of a few years ago. BYU’s QB, RB, TE, and WR will probably all get drafted along with a couple OL and defensive players. Not saying they can beat anyone in the country, but they could certainly play with just about anybody.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:48 am
Yeah well what happens if BYU goes to a BCS Game and wins (let’s say they beat OSU b/c of how slow they are?).. Then what do we do with an undefeated BYU team that wins it’s BCS game?
September 29th, 2008 at 10:48 am
I think the BYU-Utah comparison cgb makes is accurate.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:49 am
Laugh and say, “Where’s your Jesus now?”????
September 29th, 2008 at 10:49 am
rank them top 5 and call it an excellent season. I love these easy questions.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:50 am
give them a trophy and still allow polygamy in utah.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:50 am
Now that’s the real question.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:50 am
god…that last little thread is WAY too deadspin-y.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:51 am
BYU would need to avoid playing South FLorida or whoever comes out of the ACC, though. BYU stomping Wake Forest isn’t going to win them any favor with the voters.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:51 am
Good point NSR.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:52 am
@NSR… Completely agree. BYU is talented. They are more than a quirky schedule good…
As much as I hate South Florida and think that they are as fraudulent as sub-prime loans in Cali, I really hope that the Bulls go undefeated as does BYU. Hell, throw in an undefeated UConn team too (that has a snowball’s chance on the sun of happening). Let’s just make the voters suffer aneurysms trying to figure out who to vote for. Hilarity should ensue.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:52 am
comment of the day.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:54 am
I think it will be the same mess as last year, one non BCS undefeated and then a bunch of BCS teams with 1 or 2 losses.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Kurt Warner kidnapped him.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Kurt Warner kidnapped him.
Then fumbled him, picked him up and threw him for an interception to Beelzebub
September 29th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Ball State.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:58 am
Not surprisingly, He slipped out of Kurt’s hands.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:58 am
You got me cbh49er. Well played, sir.
September 29th, 2008 at 10:59 am
oooo. Good call KC. Testicular U has a very good opportunity to win the rest of their games as well. Let’s add them to the mix while we are at it. Good stuff!
September 29th, 2008 at 11:01 am
Damn, not one of you has an original joke today, you all fail.
How exactly is Bama ranked #4 in the USAT poll? They have far and away the best win of anyone in the top 5, and a second good win.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:02 am
If Ringer doesn’t average at least 5ypc, he doesn’t deserve Heisman consideration.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:03 am
coop…i was talking about that myself with my buddies watching the game saturday night. it just doesnt make sense and i’d def put them over Oklahoma for no. 1. that win was dominant.
terrence cody haunted my dreams.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:12 am
when everyone is putting 9 in the box, against an oline that is with 4 new starters, i don’t give a shit. watch the fucking games, he takes over in the 4th quarter.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:14 am
@sparty – Agreed. I would love to have either Ringer or Donald Brown in my backfield. Ringer could be the best back in the Big Ten.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:18 am
It’s college football not the NFL. If you can’t get 5ypc, you can’t be considered, sorry. He has 41 more carries and less yards than Brown. 4.8 just doesn’t cut it.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:18 am
ringer is easily the top rb in the discussion, but i think he has roughly zero chance of beating out bradord or daniels
September 29th, 2008 at 11:19 am
Spence-as much as that game pissed me off. Alabama is not the best team in the country. They beat UGA on the road by 11. Solid win, however, if a team could have played a worse first half of football, I would like to see it. 60 yards of penalties in the first two drives. A forced fumble, negated by penalty. 3 punts with a net yardage of 10 yards. A pass off of the hip that miraculously cradles into a the defenders hands. There alone is 21 points off the board. That game looked hauntingly familiar to the West Virginia game: Georgia is a better football team that didn’t help themselves in the first half. Oh well, shit happens.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:23 am
dwalthi…you know, i agree with all that. but the way bama has dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides, not just against UGA, but also against clemson (may or may not be impressive, jury is still out but may render their verdict soon).
there is no man playing college football capable of blocking terrence cody, there may only be a handful of TANDEM’S capable.
and UGA looked great in the 2nd half, but by then, bammer was in full-scale complacency, grind out the clock, don’t give up big plays mode. i honestly believe that stafford could literally throw through a wall.
one thing tho…i thought florida was going to smoke UGA…kinda going 180 on that.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:23 am
Dominating the 4th quarter against Notre Dame and Florida Atlantic doesn’t mean much, unfortunately.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:24 am
@dwalthi… UGA played awful, but I think a good bit of that was due to who they played.
Trust me, I hate Satan, but the Tide looks dominant on both the O line and D line. They are physically beating up everyone they play. I’m not sure that they will be the best team in the country in late November, but as of right now, they’ve earned that ranking based on the beatings they’ve given people.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:25 am
so if Ringer puts up those same number against the rest of the Big Ten schedule, and MSU theoretically goes 10-2, he doesn’t get consideration because he isn’t averaging 5.0 yards a carry? that is your argument?
September 29th, 2008 at 11:27 am
i was waiting for that argument. 200 yards a game is impressive no matter who you are doing it against.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:27 am
I think you’re going to get a strong case for BYU to be number one if they’re the lone unbeaten. They have some history as a very good program and outside of the Washington fiasco have destroyed teams. The MWC is also going to get a big jump by their annihilations of the Pac 10.
Re: LSU. They looked awful on Saturday and still didn’t come anywhere close to losing that game. USC and Florida looked awful and lost. Right now I’ll take LSU over Texas and Missouri. I’ll buy LSU, but their schedule is brutal down the stretch.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:31 am
Yes. If it takes 45 carries to get to that 200 yards, it is less impressive than when it took Reggie Bush 20-25. Sorry.
Oh, and Michigan St. isn’t going 10-2.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:32 am
Spence- No argument on the lines. Going in, any rational UGA fan had to know that was the acquilles heel. Bama is nasty on both. As for Florida, that should be a good game. UGA has a mental block against Florida, which always makes it interesting. UGA should represent the East in the SEC Championship game and it will be interesting to see if they get Bama again. Although, I would put my money on LSU out of the west. They are just as good if not better on both lines than Bama.
Wally- I agree. They came out and smashed UGA in the face and by the time we recovered, it was too late. Bama has way too much inexperience. I believe they start 15 freshman. I don’t know if they will be able to hold this kind of play all year. However, if they do, teams will be hard pressed to win against them.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:32 am
dwaltlhi, Arkansas has played a whole season worth of football like that. Tough to watch.
Clown, you go to the game?
September 29th, 2008 at 11:33 am
i agree with you on this. im drunk on LSU kool-aid right now.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:36 am
Bama > LSU. You’ll see.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:36 am
yeah I went, ark. Sorry it went the way it did. One thing’s for sure – the Razorbacks have some fug uniforms.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:36 am
why are you comparing him to Reggie Bush? Did I say that he was as good as Reggie Bush? No I did not, but he is better than Brown.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:36 am
didn’t Saban’s LSU team have a lot of INexperience when they beat Oklahoma in the NC game?
it’s a Saban trademark…recruit like crazy, get a bunch of risky but talented JUCO’s, throw em into the fire and just throw em into the fire.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:37 am
Sparty,
It was the same argument that people made against Troy Davis from Iowa St. a few years back. Sure, he’s got great overall numbers, but if so-and-so carried the ball that many times, he’d have better totals.
He’ll be considered because he’s the best of a weak RB class, but he won’t get much consideration beyond that.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:38 am
NSR-maybe so. but if he starts putting up those numbers against the rest of the Big Ten, the consideration will come. especially if he keeps the TD lead.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:39 am
With LSU, you just don’t know what QB is going to show up. That Bama v LSU game is going to be a smash mouth game.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:39 am
fucking turf toe…beanie’s still the best back in the country.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:40 am
Hell, with a game like that at least you can leave at halftime and get your drink on.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:41 am
True Spencer- The thing with Bama is they still have Auburn and LSU to play and then whomever they would get in the championship game. Their schedule is similar to UGA’s although not as difficult.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:44 am
walt…gotta think that this is the year that Saban beats Auburn tho…total gut feeling.
and i agree that LSU is only as good as their QB that day and that LSU/Bama will be a slobberknocker. should make for some good entertainment, i just hope that i don’t get screwed out of the tv coverage.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:46 am
@spencer096 – As of right now I have no doubt bama beats auburn
September 29th, 2008 at 11:50 am
Bama will beat Auburn. The matchup between Auburn’s D-line and Bama’s O-line will be fun to watch, but Auburn doesn’t have an answer to Bama’s d-line.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:51 am
are you serious? sure they do…two words: chop. block.
September 29th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
That was a without dirty play breakdown.
