Theater of the Absurd, Al Davis Style
NFL, Video October 1st. 2008, 9:00amBizarre. Al Davis should have been forced out the moment he traded coach Jon Gruden to the Bucs in 2001 after Oakland lost the “Tuck Rule” game to the Patriots in the snow. You know how that worked out - Oakland hasn’t had a winning season since 2002, and newly-promoted o-line coach Tom Cable is the team’s fifth coach since. (Gruden, meanwhile, has been to the playoffs three times in six years in Tampa, and memorably defeated the Raiders in the Super Bowl.)
Here is Lane Kiffin’s response, best summed up as “bewildered.” Too bad he didn’t address the “Chris Mortensen is a liar” comment.

Rich Gannon should be the one dating Gisele.
October 1st, 2008 at 9:05 am
If I was my last name was Gannon I would call my cock the “Gannon Cannon”.
Did you see Al Davis’s eys he looked like he was crying but he wasnt.

Good talk.
October 1st, 2008 at 9:11 am
Well I just left this comment in the last thread, but I actually thought he sounded like he knew exactly what he was talking about.
Oh and who exactly is going to “force out” the owner of the team?
October 1st, 2008 at 9:12 am
What is up with Lane Kiffin not wanting to pick Jamarcus Russell?
October 1st, 2008 at 9:14 am
It does sound like the same Al from the 80’s. At the same time, it does sound like he he gave Kiffin no room for mistakes. One bad playcall, and Davis is giving someone else his duties. Still, I’ll coach the Raiders if he calls me.

@Mike NYC
I dont know, but they need to get to work on Mike Brown, NOW!
October 1st, 2008 at 9:17 am
I guess I can’t begrudge this Tom Cable guy for making a blatant cash grab, but to interview for a job when the coach (your coach) is still in place is in poor taste. Not that head coaches for the Raiders get much respect, but this guy will get none.
October 1st, 2008 at 9:19 am
because he knows jamarcus sucks.
October 1st, 2008 at 9:20 am
@spencer- well you would think the head coach would have a little say in the first overall pick. i never heard who kiffin wanted instead
October 1st, 2008 at 9:21 am
AL Davis needs to run for president.
October 1st, 2008 at 9:21 am
irish…kiffin wanted quinn, they were in negotiations with quinn’s agent. and normally the HC would, but this is oakland we’re talking about, skeletor’s in charge.
JUST WIN BABY!!!
October 1st, 2008 at 9:22 am
According to PFT, Kiffen wanted Brady Quinn.
October 1st, 2008 at 9:22 am
to hear Al Davis critique someone about personnel moves is just hysterical.
October 1st, 2008 at 9:22 am
They need to get going on the live action Simpsons movie ASAP just to make sure Al can play Monty Burns…Pete Rozelle looks better today than him
October 1st, 2008 at 9:23 am
Al Davis has a HUGE boner for the deep passing game. He fell in love with the fact that Russell could launch it 70+ yards easily. Kawakami had a good list this morning on the coaching hires. It alternated between Offensive gurus (Gruden, Kiffin, et. al.) being replaced by Offensive Line guys (Shell, Callahan, et. al.) over the past 2 decades or so.
Al needs to realize Darryl LaMonica isn’t walking through that door

Oh and who exactly is going to “force out†the owner of the team?
The most gangster fan base in the NFL.

tommy kelly’s $50 million contract is on line 2.

thks spencer. clown, you were late -1
October 1st, 2008 at 9:27 am
SNL should get Christopher Walken to do this conference, although they’ll be too busy having Tina Fey doing Sarah Palin and that white guy do Barack (he looks like him, but sounds nothing like him). Plus, most viewers would have no idea who Al Davis is.
October 1st, 2008 at 9:29 am
Davis is an embarassment to the NFL. He said a bunch of crap yesterday that could easily be said about him. There isn’t a qualified coach on the planet that is going to work for him now. Even worse, his D-Coordinator sucks and he won’t fire him. What kind of head coach is going to willingly work with a shitty staff and have no say in it.
I am a Chiefs fan and I would never wish this kind of bullshit on them. Al Davis is a fucking moron.
GO BILLS!!
October 1st, 2008 at 9:29 am
you know, i actually like the roster Al Davis has assembled in Oakland. add a few decent wideouts who can stretch the field, and that’d be a pretty good team.
he just needs to settle on a coach…and to think, if he just paid mike shanahan the $240k he owed him, they’d be set on a coach for the next decade.
October 1st, 2008 at 9:29 am
irish, I like to cite my sources. you want to go with spencer mortenson, that’s fine with me.
October 1st, 2008 at 9:31 am
they suck
October 1st, 2008 at 9:33 am
Al Davis is a fucking senile old man.
October 1st, 2008 at 9:34 am
clown…mortensen? just call me spencer glazer because i’m on top of everything first.
October 1st, 2008 at 9:34 am
Are we really ready to pronounce Brady Quinn > Russell?
October 1st, 2008 at 9:36 am
@Mike NYC: Quinn > Cutler
/TBL
October 1st, 2008 at 9:36 am
So Kiffin wanted Brady Quinn instead of Russell? Well then I guess it’s settled. The man is racist. Plus he has the type of name an 80’s teen movie villian would have. So he’s racist AND an 80’s teen movie villian, he had to be fired.

Mike NYC…no no no no no. far too early.
i like russell, don’t get me wrong, i just think the dude is a fuckin’ moron. that shit works against Mississippi State, but against teams like San Diego and Pittsburgh, it’s a different story.

Dont forget Notre Dame.

How can someone that batshit crazy still have a position of leadership? That press conference was surreal. The most bizzare press conference I have ever seen (or most likely will ever see). A total joke.
October 1st, 2008 at 9:47 am
I think Al sounded and looked batshit crazy.
That being said when Kiffin was asked to regute what Al said he just called them lies and wasn’t specific. I think both sides are dumbasses.
October 1st, 2008 at 9:47 am
Mark, can you please put page 1 of the letter on the screen, and while you’re at it kill Mortensen.

Kiffin personified the deer in headlights look everywhere he went, it was like the whole world was moving too fast for him. He’s a position coach at best in the NFL and a reach to even lead a D-1 college program. But he was right about JaMarcus Russell (colossally over-rated coming out of college) and before it’s all over Quinn will have better career numbers.
October 1st, 2008 at 10:14 am
What a weird year for Chris Mortenson.
October 1st, 2008 at 10:17 am
What did Mort do now?
Also, Al said something about telling Lane on a Friday before the Buffalo game about something. Then five seconds later said he told him in person on a Wednesday. Then five seconds later said he sent him a telegram on said Friday with the same message. Then Al proceeded to turn on the projector with a copy of said telegram that scolded Lane.
That doesn’t even make sense.
Also, Al Davis looks like the Crypt Keeper. A skeleton with nappy hair and rotting flesh and muscle that dangles off his bones.
October 1st, 2008 at 10:27 am
I love how Kiffin never actually denied Davis’ accusation that they never talked. He may be an inexperienced coach, but he sure seems good at spending two minutes not answering a question.
October 1st, 2008 at 11:10 am
Al Davis thinks his pet’s heads are fallin’ off.
October 1st, 2008 at 12:56 pm
I love how Cable refused to throw Kiffin under the bus… knowing that in the long run he’s better off burning bridges with Davis than Kiffin. Hilarious.
October 1st, 2008 at 12:59 pm
Also, Kiffin was right… long term Calvin Johnson will be a much better pick than JaMarcus Russell. Drafting first round receivers can be very risky, but not as risky as first round QBs.

Matt Millen doesn’t know what to think of this, they were all risky for him.
