Pat Forde and Rick Pitino: Conflict of Interest?
College Basketball, ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings October 2nd. 2008, 11:00am
Huge Pat Forde fan. We’ve mentioned it a few times on this site - when it comes to college sports, he’s among the best in the business (Dara Torres probably disagrees with us). But here’s something odd that is worth discussing - Forde recently wrote a book with Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino. With is considerably different than about. (Back story: Before getting scooped up by ESPN, Forde wrote for the Louisville Courier-Journal.)
The obvious: How can Forde objectively continue to cover college basketball after he ostensibly spent considerable time with one of the biggest coaching names in the game for this book? It will be interesting to see if Forde is prevented from writing about the Cardinals this year (they’ll be good), or opining about them on television.
[Full disclosure: Several months ago, we asked Forde for an interview. He accepted. The interview never wound up happening, we hear, because of a college sports editor at ESPN, David Albright. Mr. Albright has also prevented other ESPN writers, such as Andy Katz, from doing interviews with The Big Lead.]
Another interesting reason to monitor this story: What if it kicks off a trend? Athletes and coaches cozying up to ESPN-types to write books, in an effort (perhaps!) for favorable coverage, or, at the minimum, blanket coverage across ESPN’s many platforms (TV, internet, radio). It definitely wouldn’t hurt in the recruiting game, either.

Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt until he writes crap. He is definitely a very good writer.

Agree with beerman. Let’s not condemn someone before something happens. Unless that person is Gwen Ifill. Just kidding…

I don’t see what the big deal is. I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Plus, even if does show homerism for U of L, how is that any different than Lou Holtz rubbing one out to Notre Dame every week?

He also coached at Ark, South Carolina, Minnesota, etc. He’s retired. I don’t think there’d be any issue if Rick P were done.
The key is with vs. about. If Simers write a book on the dysfunctional Dodgers, that’s one thing. If he spends the offseason working on a book with Joe Torre, its another.

If Pitino had only stayed at UK, he’d be regarded as a Top 5 college coach of all-time.

whoa, whoa, whoa…
when has forde EVER been objective?

Every time he rips the Big 10.

The NFL Network’s Adam Schefter co-wrote a book with Mike Shanahan:

Yet that hasn’t stopped him from writing and reporting on the NFL, including yesterday when he did a story on Shanahan.

NSR…that’s, just like, your opinion…MAN.

Feinstein’s written with Bruce Edwards, covered Tom Watson; Wilbon’s written with Barkley, then covered him; there are others, too.
It’s not so much a conflict of interest as it is a way to milk the cash cow. You’re going to get closer, sure, but you’re not necessarily going to let that closeness blind you to faults, and I would guess Forde, as good a writer and as strong a journalist as he is, isn’t going to make that mistake. (I hope. I don’t want to lose another good one.)

“Let’s not condemn someone before something happens.”
He went to Mizzou. That something has already happened. Reading most of his college football stuff is like reading People magazine. Lots of fluff. The Forde Yard Dash? yuck yuck. How clever.

Forde has always been in bed with Louisville. Why do you think he hates Bobby Petrino so much?
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:20 am
@mike NYC- i think Pitino is one of the top 10 greatest coaches in college basketball. probably at the bottom of the list, but i would have to say so

I love his stuff. I think he is one of the best writers at ESPN and until he goes easy on Petino he should be given the benefit of the doubt.

FNL - 3×01 hit Usenet about 1230 am. I’m sure it’s at a torrent site near and dear to you. Meanwhile you’ll excuse me while I go flog myself while paused on Tyra.

Maybe because he’s a piece of shit?
I like Forde, in that business everyone is friends with someone and went to school somewhere, biases all around.

As TBL has mandated, I will not give away plot, but I thought it was an above average episode and set up the stories for the season. Tyra had a strange look going on. I think the coach’s daughter is passing her for number 2 to Minka Kelly’s 1.

Tom Verducci wrote a book with Joe Torre. Jay Glazier wrote a book with Michael Strahan. WC Heinz ghostwrote Vince Lombardi’s book Run to Daylight. This shit has been happening forever. Back to the 20’s when Ford Frick ghostwrote for Babe Ruth. Do these guys show some favor to the guys they are in business with? Maybe but it also helps them break stories.

I bet you don’t even know who WC Heinz is.

Dude makes some fantastic ketchup.

yea, but that was about what product exfoliates the best and what to wear for each season.

Didn’t our good buddy Peter pen a chapter of Favre’s memoir?
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:44 am
ty…if by “pen a chapter” you mean “steal a lock of favre’s hair” i think you’re right.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:48 am
I just figured they would just use PK’s MMQ archive as the only source material for a Favre memoir/romance novel.

awesome find. I have been trying to get an email for Schefter for months. This will make a splendid question.

re: Wilbon/Barkley. Was Barkley retired when the book was written? Or was he in Houston. I don’t recall. Feinstein is sort of a different animal - he writes what, a college sports column for the Washington Post twice a month? I don’t think he’s a regular columnist there.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:55 am
the thing about the Strahan book - and not to defend Glazer - but i believe it came out AFTER he retired. the cover of the book is an image from the Super Bowl. was he doing interviewing during hte season? this we do not know.
October 2nd, 2008 at 12:01 pm
TBL…The Strahan book was released before the 2007 season..I know I pre ordered it..in other news I am completely insane

Here is the link with the publish date October 2007..I ordered in August 2007

I think Forde’s overall work is very good, too, but I don’t think this could be worse than the puff pieces he’s allowed to write about his alma mater (Missouri).
October 2nd, 2008 at 12:28 pm
In case anyone wants to form a mental image of Forde furiously pleasuring himself to Chase Coffman.
MOST EXCITING TEAM IN THE UNIVERSE!!!
