Out of the Gate, MLB Favorites Stumble
Baseball October 2nd. 2008, 9:35am
Los Angeles is apathetic about baseball, so the headlines aren’t as doom and gloom (not to mention Plaschke and Simers are both following the Dodgers) but it took one swing of the bat from a man named Loney to officially kick off Armageddon in Chicago. Zambrano and Harden are pitching next? Well Z’s 0-1 in four postseason starts, and Harden’s elbow will probably shatter while doing the dishes tonight or reaching for the remote. Soriano and Fukudome were a combined 0-for-9 with four left on base? Gross. It’s soooo over.
Is this a choke yet? (Trib)
Left with a Loney Feeling (Sun-Times)
And after sifting through both papers, here’s our favorite line: “The Chicago City Council had better ban booze and suicide after the seventh inning. There will be no joy in Wrigleyville–only the usual sorrow and pity.”

But how does this affect the Yankees?
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:40 am
Soriano’s post-season average dips to .218 with a sub .600 OPS and 51 K’s in 165 AB’s. Not good.
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:43 am
The postseason owns Soriano. It’s in his head in a bad way.
As a Cubs fan. All the weight in the world is on their shoulders now. I hope Z steps up, for once.
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:44 am
Yes I love it Fuck the Cubs. I want Anehiem to win so the goddamn White Sox can beat them.
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:49 am
Why didn’t Harden start last night? Dempster sucks.
Is he hurt?
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:50 am
I want Anehiem to win so the goddamn White Sox can beat them
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:50 am
Whoops…fucked that post up
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:51 am
Does anyone in LA follow the Angels?
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:53 am
For the love of god let Boston lose.
Enough of that annoying team and their city.
GO. AWAY.
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:53 am
It’s pure groupthink. I am still holding out for the Red Sox sweeping the Cubs in the World Series, so I can write my obnoxious, gloating Boston fan post.
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:53 am
“Yes I love it Fuck the Cubs.” Tampa
Q4T.
“Does anyone in LA follow the Angels?”
Nope. Only in Anaheim.
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:53 am
Was it me, or did the Cubs look tighter than Minka Kelly’s ass last night? Geez, every time they came to bat, it looked like they wanted to puke. Lee was doing his best impersonation of GIDP Magglo Ordonez.
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:54 am
Wait, are you saying in this post that the MLB favorites are the Cubs?
Who seriously thought they were better than Boston?
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:54 am
How would a city council go about banning suicide?
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:57 am
I go into the postseason assuming the best team in the NL is the 5th best team in the tournament until proven otherwise…I’ve been right more than I’ve been wrong this decade
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:59 am
Redsox over another crappy NL West team that got hot at the right time. Calling it……back to football
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:59 am
The grand slam should have never happened, something was clearly wrong in Dempster’s head. 7 walks is fucking unreal.
Dempster was great all year, especially considering I was hoping for 10 wins going into the season. I had no problems with him starting Game 1 at home considering how he pitched at Wrigley all year.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:01 am
That said, I would feel better about tonight if Harden was starting. I can’t wait to drown myself in booze all by my lonesome in fucking Flint, MI.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:01 am
I thought it was the right move too considering Big Z hasn’t had the best second half…guy just pitched poorly but it doesn’t make it a bad decision
You wouldn’t want to start Dempster in a Game 3 or 4 on the road when you’re possibly facing elimination
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:02 am
i was happy to see the Dodgers win
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:05 am
Harden is 100 times the pitcher Dempster is. Is he hurt? He should have started last night.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:06 am
Diesel- Hardden Walks batters like a muthafucka. Yes 7 is un fucking real but I gaurantee Harden walks 5 but strikes out 7. Cubs need to win tonight because after Billingsby there is really no one else who poses a threat if Brad Penny comes back he might pitch the game of his life. CHOKE!!!!
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:07 am
Hey Larry, should we wake up Lou over there? Dempster just walked another guy.
Shhhh. Give him 10 more minutes.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:08 am
Bilingsby sounds like he’s a butler, not the 3rd best pitcher in his division. Which in that division is really good.
NickP–You mean Rich Harden has ever been not hurt? Shocked.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:08 am
NickP-Anne Hatheway was on some show on Fox called Get Real and I fell in love.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:08 am
You can second guess who should have pitched all you want, but that doens’t change the fact that the Cubs scored 2 runs on a wind-blown HR.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:08 am
Bilingsby sounds like he’s a butler
HA!
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:09 am
Agreed, but I’m not the manager and Harden’s velocity has been down the last month.
Harden is game 3, Lilly is game 4 (God help me).
Tampa, Brad Penny isn’t pitching in this series. Kuroda starts game 3 for LA, he of 1 run over 14 innings against the Cubs this year. Fuck me.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:10 am
The hitters have their assholes clenched tighter than last year. I didn’t think that was possible.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:12 am
Boston will sweep. Painful to say, but the Angels talked way too much about how ‘different’ they are.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:19 am
TSH-I agree they smoke LAs Ace. It sucks when its up to E. Santanna and Saunders. LA needs to take advantage of Dice”sir walks alot”K and Broke arm inconsistent Beckett. If scoring runs in an issue LA is fucked and Boston goes on to win another world Series.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:21 am
“Broke arm inconsistent” is an unfortunate nickname.

October 2nd, 2008 at 10:32 am
Yes, it’s sooooo over after one fucking game. I guess the Cubs shouldn’t even put a team on the field tonight, what’s the point? Sometimes you say really dumb shit, TBL.
I’m not even bothering to read anything in the Sun Times or Tribune on the game tonight. The writers in this town are so doom and gloom over the Cubs it’s no wonder the only thing people talk about are curses and bad luck.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:33 am
On that note, Fukudome better not be in the fucking lineup tonight
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:37 am
They gotta get Tom Verducci off of that series, he’s only enhancing the SI jinx.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:42 am
SG-I think most people in Chicago think its over judging by all the booing immediately after the game. What a bunch of ungrateful cocks.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:45 am
The Cubs are in trouble IF they continue to play Home games w/ a Road game mentality crowd NOT Supporting them… CUBS Fans are Booing them in the FIF-Inning WTF!!! Yeah THAT will definitely give the Cubs the inspiration they need to win a playoff game at their Home stadium LOL
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:48 am
WTF MATE???1?!!?
LOLZ ROFLMAO!!!!1!1!!!!11!!!!
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:51 am
TBS had an interesting stat last night during the Red Sox game.
The team that wins the opening game of the Division Series is 23-3 in the NL and only like 14-12 in the AL.
So maybe it is doom and gloom in Chicago.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:53 am
want to know why the cubs are going to lose?
their fans don’t know how to take a punch and stay in the game. It looked like the spent the entire time looking to place the blame on some other poot schmuck last night instead of trying to cheer their team on when they lost the lead.
at least the trop will be full of corporate people on their cell phones making noise if the Rays are losing.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:59 am
HA HA HA HA HA!!!! White Sox fans are commenting on Cubs fans booing? Thanks for the laugh, guys!
I was at a Sox game about three weeks ago. The fans started booing Konerko when he hurt himself on a routine tag! Some other interesting sights from the Sox games I’ve attended – a grown man BIT THE ARM of a teenager when they were fighting over a foul ball and a man hit a fellow Sox fan over the head with a shoe. You stay classy, south siders.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:59 am
Wow, Chicago is like Boston West.
I do find this post funny when comparing it to the “the media has knee jerk reactions too much” post from yesterday.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:02 am
at least the trop will be full of corporate people on their cell phones making noise if the Rays are losing
cowbells buddy
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:02 am
You fucking idiots are trying to blame the Cubs loss on the fact that the fans weren’t cheering?! It’s really astounding how many stupid people there are that comment on this blog.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:06 am
SG-Southside is not classy were grimey bastards that dont give a fuck. But we have a ring in this lifetime. You cocks need to stand up and fight and not boo like a bunch of babies after 1GAME like its over. Cheers to you and another 100 years of sucking.CHOKE!!!!
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:06 am
Wait, a Rays fan commenting on Cubs fans behavior? I’m sure you are looking forward to a full stadium after 15,000 a game all season.
There are plenty of corporate schmucks at Cubs playoff games as well, shit happens when the tickets are so fucking expensive.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:07 am
@diesel- that guy is no Rays fan. be easy with the attendance jokes
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:10 am
Sorry irish, I’m easily annoyed today
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:12 am
Tampa, just a reminder, you’re not actually from the south side of Chicago, nor do you live there. The fans spent $1000’s on tickets, they can boo if they want to. I can’t even believe I’m getting wrapped up in a stupid conversation like “The fans are booing, that’s why the Cubs lost” with someone who doesn’t know the difference between ‘your’ and ‘you’re.’
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:12 am
SG- You are so fucking smart man I wish I was just like you a Conceited, arrogant, smug, snobby and still a loser.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:13 am
no sweat Diesel. you can jump on the Rays bandwagon when the Cubs collapse
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:15 am
The Angels have the best record in baseball, true. But they also played the Angels, A’s and Rangers 57 times. That’s called padding your record. They aren’t the best AL team at all. By far.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:15 am
Tampa, just a reminder, you’re not actually from the south side of Chicago, nor do you live there.
Your from fucking Lakeshore. Ive lived on the southside 32nd and Michigan ave. Fuck you.
I’m getting wrapped up in a stupid conversation like “The fans are booing, that’s why the Cubs lost†with someone who doesn’t know the difference between ‘your’ and ‘you’re.
Petty.
the fans spent $1000’s on tickets, they can boo if they want to.
Whos fault is that I wish I would spend that kind of Doe to lose. Booing is really great support for trying to get over the hump.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:18 am
Hef,
The Angels had a better record against the AL East than they did against their own division.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:19 am
I’m not saying the Angels are the best team in baseball, but saying they padded their record with wins vs. their own division is false.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:23 am
Multiple intrasquad scrimmages.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:23 am
Angels were set up well for the regular season… but I just don’t see their starting pitching winning them a world series.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:27 am
nothing like taking away the concentration of the visiting team by being really quiet in a playoff game.
there’s no curse, just a bunch of fans that don’t know how to cheer their team on.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:28 am
Hi Hef.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:30 am
there’s no curse, just a bunch of fans that don’t know how to cheer their team on.
BINGO. Its it that hard to really realize that?
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:35 am
Wow, I sure do learn a lot here on TBL. I now know the fans are such an integral part of a baseball game, they’re the reason a pitcher walks guys or a batter decides to swing at a pitch that’s low and away. I guess when Dempster was up 0-2 on Manny in the 5th inning and the fans were on their feet cheering, they should have sat quietly so that Dempster wouldn’t have instead thrown 4 straight balls. Or in the 8th inning when everyone was on their feet chanting Let’s Go Cubs (so loudly, in fact, I could hear it from my living room window three blocks away), they should have been silent so the batters could concentrate.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:41 am
Damn SG you might have a point…they just suck.CHOKE!!!!!
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:41 am
This is the most asinine thing I will probably read all week. Where are you from? Ever watched a Cubs game on TV? Ever BEEN to a Cubs game?
We are louder than most stadiums in October for random 5th inning at bats in the middle of May. You know what last night is called? Shellshock. Why don’t you try going 100 years without a World Series, then have your Game 1 optimism squashed by 7 walks and a grand slam in the first 5 innings.
Until you figure out what the fuck you are talking about, please shut the fuck up for the sake of humanity.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:43 am
Guys, the Angels suck. I thought we all agreed on this?
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:46 am
there’s no curse, just a bunch of fans that don’t know how to cheer their team on.
I dont think this is asinine. They do all of that cheering and then Boo the shit out of them right after the game getting them ready for game two.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:49 am
Jesus christ people, this isn’t fucking little league.
Yaaayyy everyone gets a trophy!
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:52 am
Diesel: Breathe, man. Your team wasn’t good enough to win the WS anyway. Would have required much luck.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:53 am
THANK YOU! This is the point I’ve been trying to make all day. The team didn’t play well so they lost the game. It’s not the fans fault, nor is it a curse or a jinx. Call it a choke, call it poor pitching, blame Soriano and Fukudome for NEVER HITTING THE FUCKING BALL, etc. Just stop saying the fans were the reason the Cubs lost the game.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:54 am
Come on man, don’t ruin my great vengeance and furious anger.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:56 am
Sorry Dies
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:58 am
it never is the fans fault, is it? see: bartman, steve.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:59 am
The most noise the crowd made yesterday in anaheim was when TBS did a close up shot of the fans in the 4th or 5th.
Hilarious.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:59 am
I believe it’s spelled “Deeess”
October 2nd, 2008 at 12:00 pm
And Tampa, if grown men can’t handle booing at the end of the game when they play like shit, then MAYBE THEY SHOULDN’T PLAY FUCKING BASEBALL. I watch Project Runway for my dose of gay, I don’t need any during a playoff baseball game, thank you very much.
October 2nd, 2008 at 12:00 pm
That was fucking Alex Gonzalez’s fault you stupid fuck. Alou wasn’t catching that ball unless he suddenly got springs in his shoes.
All you idiots that think it is the fans’ fault, read this for an in person take from someone that would be all over the fans if they were so “bad” like you seem to think.
October 2nd, 2008 at 12:14 pm
Diesel is 100% correct.
October 2nd, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Never was Bartman’s fault, fan interfence is when Hillbilly Sox fans on crystal meth go on the field to beat up old first base coachs.
