Get Your Phillies-Dodgers Picks In
Baseball October 9th. 2008, 1:30pm
Busy night in TV: The Office, a new show that looks decent (Life on Mars), ACC football, and baseball. At the outset of the postseason, we predicted a Dodgers-Red Sox World Series, and we’re sticking to it. Phillies will win tonight, but we’ll take the Dodgers in six.
Required reading: TJ Simers, who blasted San Diego last month, absolutely tees off on Philly today. “It’s an angry place, all right, everything old here in Philadelphia, crumbling and in ruin. Even the city’s main attraction has a crack in it. Philly has always been more bark than championship bite, so why should the Dodgers give a hoot about folks who paint their faces and then have to drive home looking like sad clowns?” Wow. Can’t wait till he destroys Boston in two weeks.
By every measure, the Phillies outhit the Dodgers . . . and it’s not even close. (The Good Phight)
Remember 25 years ago when Philadelphia actually won something? (NY Times)
“I’m glad the Phils aren’t getting ridiculous press. I’m glad people are kind of quiet on the Phils, and predictions are ruling them out. They can just focus on the NLCS, winning it, moving on.” (Phillies Nation)

The NY Times is forgetting that the Philadelphia Soul won the 2008 Arena League championship. How dare they disrespect the Soul.

Don’t forget a half hour of Tina Palin doing Sarah Fey. Oh, and Always Sunny coming off it’s funniest episode of the season.

There is no crack in cheese steaks. They are naturally addicting.

Can we all have a moment of silence for Gonzo, who would’ve loved to see the Phillies in the NLCS? RIP brother.

Red Sox over the sacrificial lamb.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Life on Mars looks like a poor man’s Journeyman. Now why’d they have to cancel Journeyman?
October 9th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
Journeyman
What is this shit?
October 9th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Also tonight, the Red Wings raise their 11th Stanley Cup Champion banner at the Joe.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Dodgers in 6.
Manny goes for 4HR and 11RBI. The Red Sox Nation prays for the matchup of Dodgers vs. Sox.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Dodgers in 6. Can’t see the Phillies winning more than one game when Myers, Moyer, or Blanton starts.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Let me be the 4th: The Phighting Phils in 6. MVP: Pat Burrell.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Not trying to be a dick Sports Gal, but wasn’t last year the first time in franchise history they didn’t sell out the season opener? Then again, there is nothing else going on in Detroit. I still think the problem is that ticket prices are too high, so people may watch at home, but may not be there to see it.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
It’s scaring me that so many of the “experts” are picking the Dodgers. That’s the kiss of death.
With that said, Dodgers in 6.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
I’m going LA in 7.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
It’s just amazing to me that everyone suddenly loves the Dodgers. Awful division. All I’ve been hearing all week is Manny and Torre. They were a .500 team all year. Phillies are in one of the toughest divisions. They beat LA in all 4 games at home. They have home field advantage. Their bullpen is superior. Myers and Moyer have been money. What hell am I missing? Is it just the Manny mystique?
October 9th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
I was thinking Quantum Leap
October 9th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
furcal…that’s what you’re missing. and LA’s pitching isn’t anything to sneeze at.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
crackerjack…oh, and keep in mind i picked phillies in 6…phillies to win it all.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Rockets, take a look at the unemployment rate and the economy in Detroit and you’ll have a pretty good idea why ticket sales for the Wings last year were the lowest in years. The TV ratings, on the other hand, were as high as they’ve ever been.
P.S. The banner game is on Versus tonight, 7pm eastern. I know jibbles will be watching!!
October 9th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Well, at least TJ didn’t trot out the “they threw snowballs at Santa” bit. I don’t get enough of that chestnut.
Phils in 6.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
But then, Journeyman was a poor man’s Quantum Leap.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
With Michael Schmidt at third and Steve Carlton pitching the Phils are a lock, unless that stupid ass Chub Feeney makes us play in the rain.
/still bitter after all these years
October 9th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Im going with Philly in 6 because LA won by default since they played they Cubs.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
@cracker jack… Once Torre sat all the old dead weight and put his young kids on display every night, the Dodgers have looked pretty tight. Their pitching is top notch, especially if Lowe’s sinker is acting up as it has lately. Manny makes them tick on offense, but Martin, Ethier, Kemp, and Loney are pretty solid for them as well.
They are extremely young though, so they might not respond if Philly punches them in the mouth in games 1 & 2. However, I just don’t like Philly’s pitching enough to make me think they can beat them in a 7 game series.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
I’d say Furcal and Rollins are pretty evenly matched.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Looking forward to the SNL political special tonight… TBL, did you see SNL torching the dems on the bailout? It’s great stuff and right up your alley.

I agree that the Dodgers are good, and may be favorites in a year or two, but not now. I just don’t see it. The Phils have a bullpen that is among the lowest in innings pitched, and among the best in terms of ERA. Lidge looked better his last couple times out. Hopefully that last game is a good omen and the team starts to swing the bats some more, too. I think the Phils in 6.
And Simers is a joke. I’m from NJ (but only 5 miles from Philly, just over the Ben Franlin Bridge so I’m basically from Philly), but the city, for the most part, gets nicer every year. Granted, North Philly (mini-Camden) is awful and will probably never be recovered, but Old City, Northern Lights, Center City, Rittenhouse Square, there’s a million things to do. The guy can go suck a dick.
I can’t believe I just defended Philly. Wow. That never happens.
October 9th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Keep the NHL talk out of a baseball thread damnit.
Phils in 6. Not that it matters cause if you look at the two series you really get an idea of how awful the NL is.
October 9th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Lidge looked better his last couple times out.
Philly better hope nobody rips a monster homer off of him…
