For whatever reason, ESPN has fallen in love with 71-year-old codger Lou Holtz, even though he’s not nearly as funny as Beano Cook, and most of the time, his analysis leaves the other talking heads on set stifling laughter. Late Saturday night, Holtz lost his shit in the lame “final verdict” segment, apoplectic at the thought that Texas QB Colt McCoy was having a better season than UF’s Tim Tebow.

“You’re talking about one game. One damn game,” Holtz blurted, and laughter is heard throughout the set. “The guy was not … the guy was … the guy was not a good QB last year,” Holtz proclaimed, incredulous at Rece Davis rendering a verdict in favor of Mark May.

Davis responds, “Last year doesn’t have anything to do with this … ” but his voice cracks as he backs away in laughter, and Holtz rants on. “We’re talking about the best quarterback. Not who had the best day. Not who’s played the weakest damn schedule. Who in the hell has Texas played until they played Oklahoma?”

At that point, you can hear Mark May (?) off-camera say, ‘Are we doing this again?’ which either means he thought Holtz was so off his rocker that it needed to be re-taped, or the idea of the segment is so preposterous that producers needed to go back to the drawing board. The first question that should be asked in the meeting, “instead of biting off the played-out, everything’s-an-argument PTI format, can’t we come up with something original?”
