Torre Tinkers Too Much, Phillies Explode in the 8th: Philly 7, Dodgers 5
Baseball October 14th. 2008, 10:00am
So did Joe Torre panic or what? Yanking D Lowe after just 74 pitches was understandable; nobody can definitely say he would have made it through the sixth pitching on just three days’ rest.
And then … well … we’re not sure what happened.
Torre burned through four pitchers in two innings, leaving him with one bridge to his closer, clinging to a 5-3 lead in the 8th. That bridge, Cory Wade, pitched two innings the previous night. Not surprisingly, he served up a two-run homer to Sunday’s instigator, Shane Victorino. Enter Broxton, who now had to get four outs a night after getting six. It wasn’t quite the Mariano Rivera-John Wettleland 8th-9th combo that Torre had in 1996.
Broxton left one hanging for Matt Stairs to jack into the right field stands – his 1st postseason homer in 19 seasons - and the Phillies stormed ahead, 7-5. Ballgame. Now leading the series 3-1, the Phillies have their best pitcher, Cole Hamels, going tonight.
We’re realists. So is it too early to start the Manny sweepstakes? What will Boras demand for his 36-year-old client, four or five years? After what Manny’s done this postseason – 11-for-22, three homers, 11 RBI, in seven games – what GMs would still be willing to overpay for an aging slugger who has been playing for a contract? Mets? Angels? Dodgers?

Joe Torre Cursed?

If your pitcher is struggling, you have to pull him. You can’t afford for the game to get out of hand.
Also, not sure why you let Cory Wade pitch two fucking innings. Put your best pitcher in! I hate the notion that your “closer” (who is usually the best reliever) can only come in for the 9th inning.

Gimmie –
I don’t get the Kershaw move. One batter?
I also disagree with pitching Brox for 2 innings in a 7-2 game the night before.

that was the first homer Broxton has allowed at Chavez since 2006. it came at a baaaaad time.

get gimmeabeerman a beer for that comment. I also agree with the Kershaw thing. Torre should have started him in game 4 rather than bringing him out of the pen in games 2(?) and 4.

though i disagreed with starting lowe, it didn’t turn out bad. the game turned when kershaw came in for one out. why bring a starter in for ONE OUT?
that, i think, was the beginning of the end.

Torre sucks. He doesn’t like young players thus the Kershaw and Kemp move. I don’t mind him pulling Kemp for Pierre to get a spark, but why not move Pierre to the #2 spot to help create something? Why bat him #8 and make him a nonfactor?
I don’t like Torre’s batting order either. Martin should not be hitting cleanup, and DeWitt should be hitting #8.
Ethier’s GIDP was predictable. AROD-esque.

Matt Stairs = craziest career ever.

game 5 is Wednesday night, not tonight. Only ALCS tonight

Manuel is the idiot. The intentional BB to Manny in the first inning was terrible. The other one was more defensible but still bad.
October 14th, 2008 at 10:17 am
You are missing the bottom line that the Phillies are simply a better all-around team than the Dodgers. I said Phillies in 5 and will stick to it.
The Dodgers have overachieved to make it this far.

That Matt Stairs Shot was fucking awesome I think Thome was the last guy I saw jack one that high up in the air.

NickP, both times Manny was IBB, it worked. I agree with Manny being given the Bonds treatment right now.
October 14th, 2008 at 10:20 am
We’re better than that, right?
Leave the post hoc stuff to Tim McCarver.
October 14th, 2008 at 10:23 am
I think McCarver agreed with you, NickP. The previous time McCarver said the Phillies should challenge Manny because they had a lead, Manny hit a 3-run HR. I don’t think you pitch to Manny with first base open right now. Especially with the way Martin has been hitting.

Did anyone see Boston get Raped last night?
October 14th, 2008 at 10:26 am
As a manager, I would tell my pitcher to give Manny some chin music at least once per at bat. Keep him off balance waiting for the next one to come near his noodle.
October 14th, 2008 at 10:30 am
good for Charlie Manuel. I would like to see the Dodgers win, but it would be nice for Manuel to win after having his mother pass away
GO RAYS

Yes, Tampa…thing of beauty. Did you see that the HR that Longoria hit was to a Rays fan in the stands? It turns out in the paper here today they said that the guys was wearing a Longoria jersey and it was his b-day.

i didn’t get to see a pitch of the game last night. fox showed the feed of the ESPN broadcast instead of the baseball game… it was a little disappointing for the flipback, but really disappointing when i didn’t have anything to change the channel to when kornheiser went on his stupid rants about absolutely nothing.
October 14th, 2008 at 10:45 am
Yeah, what the fuck was up with that?
I couldn’t find the game, either.
October 14th, 2008 at 10:47 am
it was really surprising to me. i’m not as surprised that they showed the game on local cable, but its hard to believe that the FOX affiliate would be allowed to be the one to show it.

“the game turned when kershaw came in for one out. why bring a starter in for ONE OUT?”
If Chan Ho Park doesn’t throw the wild pitch the Dodgers get out of that inning unscathed. When the Phillies pinch hit with Feliz for Dobbs, the right move was to get Kershaw out of there. It was the 6th inning and the Phillies hadn’t gotten a run off the Dodgers bullpen in 3 games prior.
The big at bat was Howard singling off a tough lefty in Kuo that got him on base for Victorino.
On the other move that someone ripped, with bringing in Wade first…Wade’s been great this post season and really fooled the Phillies hitters thus far. Going to a set up man who hasn’t allowed a run isn’t exactly a bad idea.
October 14th, 2008 at 11:04 am
gimmeabeerman, Wade is money. He has dominated all season and post-season. Victorino has been playing great all post-season. I feel really bad for Wade right now. The Phillies have left handed hitters, that’s why are playing so well against the Dodgers. Cubs are all rightys

“I hate the notion that your “closer†(who is usually the best reliever) can only come in for the 9th inning.”.
Look how well using KRod in the 8th worked for the Angels…
