Because Everyone Loves Duke: Paulus Now a Reserve
1-liner, College Basketball October 20th. 2008, 12:00pmPoor Paulus: It seems as if something that was brewing earlier this summer has come to fruition - Duke’s starting point guard very likely will be Nolan Smith. The incumbent, junior senior Greg Paulus, a kid who Dick Vitale has been hyping for seemingly a decade, is now a reserve. Maybe Paulus never improved his flopping?

Ummm
Who cares?
/Sincere
October 20th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
paulus is a senior, good work as always.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
Thank god, I can’t stand to look at Paulus’ sniveling little bitch face for another season
October 20th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
wow, i read the article, and it says that nolan looks like he is making a push for the starting spot.
way to jump to conclusions, christ.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
so just to clarify. paulus is not now a reserve. he has not lost his starting spot. and by tbl’s impeccable logic i would assume he is a carolina fan.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Mole - Paulus is working out with the B team. Go read some Duke message boards and get back to me.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
You sir are wrong!
October 20th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
that doesnt mean hes a reserve or that he has lost his job. and that article does NOT say that nolan is ‘likely to be the starter’. youre making up conclusions.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
not a carolina fan. you must be new here?
if you think paulus is starting at SG, then i’ve got a bridge to sell you …
October 20th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
read around, buddy, read around.
you see the seth davis mailbag in the roundup?
and when you’re done reading those message boards, get back to me.
practicing with the second unit = backup
October 20th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
HES NOT A FUCKING SHOOTING GUARD
October 20th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
yes i did actually
go learn the concept of talking about things that could happen, and get back to me
October 20th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
oh and for the record, i think nolan should be the starting point guard, ive said it on here before. but it has not happened yet and neither of the articles you have linked to say it has or that he is ‘likely’ to be.
more likely what will happen is they will split alot of time. that team is going to be very different this year and who plays point will depend on who is playing in the front court. if they have zoubek and plum in then paulus will probably be playing, if they play with a smaller front court featuring thomas nolan will play and they will play a running style
October 20th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
WOW, Paulus herself wouldn’t take this as personal as moleman is.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
paulus wouldnt care, he would be too busy turning the ball over while bringing it up the floor with under a minute to go.
him and his brother were both ridiculously overrated
October 20th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
I don’t watch college basketball (gayest sport alive), but it feels like Paulus has been at Duke since 1994. Will that shitty player ever graduate?
October 20th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Fuck that little douchebag cunt known as Greg Paulus. I can only hope he never gets any burn. Assclown. Diesel put it perfectly.
And I would end up having hated him either way, QB for ND, or PG for Duke…the Duke thing is worse. But not by much. Go celebrate a pointless 3 you tool.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
NickP-Agreed on the second part.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Paulus should have stuck with football
October 20th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
judging by how his brother has lit it up for carolina thus far and slid down the depth chart, he probably did make the right decision considering he would have been behind quinn then clausen
October 20th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
He is only the best shooter on the entire team by a fairly wide margin. There will be plenty of minutes to go around to replace Demarcus.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
@mole thanks for reminding us why we hate duke fans
October 20th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Why so much hate for Paulus? He is a tough point guard. Dude is always getting “cheap shotted” and plays hurt. Besides he can flat out shoot the rock.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
i think youre forgetting jordan davidson
exactly. which is why this whole thing of ‘poor paulus’ is retarded. even if he does get replaced, which he hasnt yet, its not like he isnt going to be playing.
although elliot williams could well take over that best shooter moniker pretty damn quickly.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Hey where is Sparty at today? I haven’t heard much about how great Ringer is today.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
Hit the nail on the head.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
eat me. he is jumping to conclusions and called paulus a junior and a shooting guard. you guys would crucify intern bill for a fucking typo but i give tbl shit and im a douchebag because im a duke fan.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
As is required by me being a Virginia fan; Fuck Duke.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
It’s a jump to conclusions mat!
October 20th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
How’s UVA looking? Singletary seemed to be the only reason they ever won last season. I remeber seeing them play…either Seton Hall or Navy early last year, and getting absolutely torched. Is Leitao a good recruiter or what?
And as a Maryland fan, I guess I’ll just flat out say fuck Duke.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
Hey, the guy made a million dollars.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
Nolan Smith’s dad invented the high five, so that alone should get him the starting job. Oh and I think Greg Paulus is white, so that alone should put him on the bench.
/science on both counts
October 20th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
That is the worst idea I’ve ever heard.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
judging by how his brother has lit it up for carolina thus far and slid down the depth chart, he probably did make the right decision considering he would have been behind quinn then clausen
sarcasm is great. Paulus was a good QB in high school
October 20th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
i know.
his brother was too though and he is fucking garbage.
its not like paulus hasnt been a good point guard, he has been. but he hasnt lived up to the hype (not his fault) and seems to not handle ball handling pressure well.
granted point guards at duke recently have been somewhat of an enigma, sean dockery was one of the best offensive point guards in high school history then comes to college and cant score but is a defensive powerhouse.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
yes.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
moleman - paulus is not practicing with the first team right now. what dont you get about that?
October 20th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
what makes duke more annoying: duke themselves or dickie v?
i say dickie v…the reason i don’t watch college basketball.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
there’s no hate for paulus. but you duke fans are living in dreamland. step away from the situation, look at it objectively.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
I cant wait for the U to beat Duke again this year
October 20th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
its still very early and they havent said who is starting. my problem is with the fact that you said the N&O artcile says that it is very likely nolan is getting the starting job, it says nothing of the sort. who knows what will happen, but saying that paulus is not the starting point guard until the season starts or an announcement is made is jumping to conclusions.
October 20th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
October 20th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
Damn the U. Beat Maryland twice last year…I think. I’m still in baseball mode.
I wonder if the Olympics hurt Coach K’s recruiting.
October 20th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
@Billy Buckner- They lost more than just Singletary. 10 wins might be a successful year…..
October 20th, 2008 at 1:05 pm
recruiting probably not, especially since they only had two or three scholarships open this year. they landed elliot williams who is one of the best shooters in the country, and got a nice coup over the summer when plumlee decommited from stanford.
and for next year they already have two of the best forwards lined up in ryan kelly and plumlee’s older brother mason.
there is a good argument though that the olympic involvement hurts the team development as it means less time with the team by him. especially considering the shakeups in the assistant coaching ranks this year.
October 20th, 2008 at 1:05 pm
@Billy - see gary come out of that tank at midnight madness, gonna be a long year for the terps
October 20th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
Kobe and Coach K leading the team to gold couldn’t have hurt recruiting.
October 20th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
Bruce, damn. That sucks. For whatever reason, I never really had any dislike for UVA. I guess this whole Leitao thing isn’t going so well.
jasontennis, I saw. And it very well could be. Vasqeuz infuriates me. I have no confidence in him at all whatsoever. They need to let Hayes run the point, just for the fact he’d cut the TO’s in half.
October 20th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
i HATE vasquez
October 20th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
also duke has two of the top players locked up in the 2010 class as well.
however carolina seems to have six players locked up each of the next three years, and unless they lose alot of players theres no way all those guys stick
October 20th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
So do I, jason. So do I. Maybe people won’t renew their seats this year (if we’re lucky) and we can get even better seats at the Comcast Center. I think I’m gonna make a drinking game out of Greivis. Drink after every TO or stupid play. I’ll be hammered by the half.
October 20th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
I was just wondering if Coach K not being on the recruiting trail would do much damage, but as you’ve pointed out, it hasn’t. They get so many absurd recruits it won’t matter.
October 20th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
moleman, i love your gusto. just for you, there will be a surfeit of Duke coverage this year. i like singer’s game, and i like henderson’s game.
scheyer, not so much.
man, if only you were around back when i posted this!
October 20th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
i was!
the latter point was so true the rest of the season. i remember the collins debate, that was some solid stuff
October 20th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
I don’t like the idea of Paulus not starting. That might mean that Duke might actually be relevant again.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
I remember the Collins debate, too — proof that TBL needs to do a little more homework every now and then.
By the way, hoops is a little different from football. “Practicing with the B team” doesn’t really mean anything other than practice that day. Maybe Smith should start ahead of Paulus, but get your facts straight first before reporting that it’s happening. Or at least get a better link.
For a blog that is purportedly about media, this is pretty shoddy.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
@Billy Buckner- To be fair to Leitao, it’s not all his fault. Jeff Jones and Pete Gillen ruined the recruiting process at UVA because of their ineptitude. Personally, I think he’s the best coach they’ve had since Terry Holland. I just hope the administration gives him enough time to get things back on track.
October 20th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
You make fair points on all counts. I guess he hasn’t been there long enough to get a grasp on his recruiting prowess. And I haven’t watched enough of their games with him at the helm to know that much about him as a game coach. I hope you’re right though, and they don’t hook him too early and they get good again. I hate when schools do that. I’d rather UVA be good than the evil empires.
