The Big 10 Needs Penn State to Beat Ohio State
College Football October 20th. 2008, 2:30pm
A headline you’ll love, in the Wall Street Journal, no less: Ohio State’s Loss Would be the Big 10’s Gain.
We couldn’t agree more. Though highly unscientific, we’re fairly certain college football fans are sick of two teams: USC and Ohio State. USC, though, is palatable because of the incredible athletes it recruits. The Buckeyes, even with Terrelle Pryor, are unwatchable. Too many dives into the line, too slow a pace, and not enough originality. Nobody likes a boring team that got fat on a weak schedule against a low-rent league.
If anyone can make a case for Ohio State hanging with Florida, Texas, or USC in the title game, please do. Just remember, the Buckeyes’ last win over an athletic team came in September of 2006 against Texas.
Penn State has sights set on Buckeyes (Inquirer)

bust a move!
October 20th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
Oh, dear lord. This isn’t going to be pretty.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
hahaha. looks, Joe Pa uses a cane because he’s so old. very funny stuff.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
sigh…
October 20th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
That pic is a dick move, TBL.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
The Big 10 might need Penn State to win but college football fans need both teams to lose. If Penn State manages to play for the national championship, they’re going to get creamed just like Ohio State has the past two years. Why? BECAUSE THE BIG TEN IS OVERRATED!
For the love of God, can we please have a good national championship game this year?
October 20th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
agreed John. not sure if my comment came across as sarcasm.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
agreed!
rarely count out a penn state team in a bowl. just ask jimmy johnson.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
penn state is the only team that can hang with other top teams. they have enough fast offensive weapons and their defense is stout (even with injuries and suspensions). i was a serious doubter, but the last two weeks have convinced me.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
sportsgal-PSU is not overrated. they have a stud defense(with speed), and a high powered offense. relax. wait, it’s Monday, what else can one expect from you.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
*only big ten team
October 20th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
by overrated you mean that it is conventional wisdom that the Big Ten sucks, right? Because that seems to be what most people say. And I’m pretty sure that Ohio State-Florida from 2 years ago won’t bring too much to bear on this year’s nat’l championship game.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
I think Ohio State will win. What happened to all the talk about Penn State and their athletes getting in trouble? that sure went away after a couple of wins
Did you hear what Joe PA said on TV this weekend? He was asked what it would take for him to sleep on a concrete floor to buy tickets. “depends on what she looked like” he responded.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Seeking cheap laughs from a picture of a senior citizen using a cane?
I think you’re a little better than that, TBL.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
How about if they beat Penn State?
October 20th, 2008 at 2:40 pm

If a Big 10 team has any chance at getting into the national championship game, I’d much rather it be Penn State than Ohio State, but I still think they’d get clobbered. Maybe I’ll be a believer in Penn State if they beat OSU this weekend.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
the whole cane thing is a result of the effects of the collision on the sideline the other year right?
October 20th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
oh, BRAINS!!! gotcha.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
TBL: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE BLOCCK ALL COMMENTS POSTED WITH AN IP ADDRESS COMING FROM OHIO! THI POST IS GOING TO BE ONE BIG SHITSTORM!!
OH THE HUMANITY!!!!
October 20th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
You’ve taken a sample size of, what, less than a game and projected that across our entire history?
Well played, instant historian…well played.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
That article really beats around the bush there. It basically says that ACC, the Big East and even the Pac 10 get no respect because one team dominates the conference, and the Big 10 is about to be the same unless tOSU loses.
That’s what we call diagnosing a symptom. The real problem is that those conferences are filled with mediocre teams. So the real solution isn’t for the few good teams to be bad, but really for the other teams to get better.
The headline really should be: Hey non-Ohio Big 10 teams: Stop sucking so much, you’re making the conference look bad.
–Ohio State
October 20th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
no. he was demonstrating an onside kick and he messed up his hip. he refuses to go to a doctor about it because he’s too busy he said.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
So if we win, the Big 10 is a fraud. If we lose, it’s a quality win. I see what you did there. Loving everyone’s logic.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
moleman,
no. he hurt his hip demonstrating an on-side kick in practice earlier this year. yes, he is old, but that dude is still bad ass.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
Weak shit on the picture TBL. poor form.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
If Ohio State beats Penn State they still won’t play for the national title. The pollsters won’t let it happen after the last two debacles. I know its not fair that they will get graded down because of past performances but I think it’s going to happen That is why I’m rooting for Ohio state because that’s the only way to not have a Big Tweleven team in the title game.
/unabashed big ten hater
October 20th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
this is a different OSU team with Pryor in the lineup. they are scary good now.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
im sorry, but osu getting embarassed three straight times against the pac 10 and sec’s best makes the big ten look worse than iowa sucking
October 20th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
for real? that’s awesome. joe pa is the man.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Sparty, this past week was Pryor’s first big game, he’d been pretty mediocre the past few weeks. scary good may be an overstatement. I’m really psyched about this game.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Nick P, no it wouldn’t be a quality win if they beat Ohio State, but maybe I’ll believe in them more than I do right now. I think every single team in the Big 10 sucks. I just want to watch a fun, exciting national championship game. That’s all I’m rooting for at this point.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
wow…great post. informative and enlightening.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
“If Penn State manages to play for the national championship, they’re going to get creamed just like Ohio State has the past two years. Why? BECAUSE THE BIG TEN IS OVERRATED!”
First off, who is overrating the B10? The only talk i here is that the conference is weak. Very logical argument you are making that just b/c Ohio St. got beat 2 yrs in a row that Penn St will get creamed as well if they were to make it.
Penn St. definitely has the talent to compete with any team, even Texas or USC. No need to get real into it now, if PSU wins this weekend, i’ll be seeyin ya in Miami.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
i know they lost to michigan, but OSU’s first ‘big’ game was against wisky at camp randall at night…a place they struggle to win in. AT THE TIME wisky wasn’t the garbage team they are now.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
I also heard he was demonstrating outside technique to the d-line and busted up his ankle so that’s not helping either
October 20th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
What the fuck – beating a Top 10 team on the road wouldn’t count as a quality win.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
That last comment makes more sense with a ? at the end.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
can someone refresh my memory: were the internets saying the Big 12 sucked when Oklahoma lost 2 straight BCS games?
October 20th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
How is exactly isn’t it a quality win?
October 20th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
yes, for real, he was demonstrating onside kick in practice…the guy really does coach. I think he may be the last coach alive who actually played ball. Sure would be nice if all the coaches weren’t guy who sucked at actually playing ball.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Clark has yet to prove that he can win a game and Penn St. has yet to prove that they can come from behind to win. And no, the Michigan game does not count as coming from behind.
I actually think a tough game against Ohio St. will do PSU more favors. If it’s a blowout, everybody is just going to write the game off and say that OSU wasn’t very good to begin with.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
does the name “jim harbaugh” ring a bell?
October 20th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Beamer balled it up at VT
October 20th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Pryor is the slowest looking fast guy ever.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
I will agree that beating OSU would not constitute a quality win, because OSU sucks balls, but it should still boost the belief in PSU to compete in a title game. It’s not going to be one of those wins that’s pushes them over the top, but gets them closer.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Tressel played ball.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Meanwhile, Ohio State just keeps bringing in great recruits, keeps winning football games, and keeps ringing the cash register for every $62 ticket sold and every BCS game they go to…
Thanks to the rest of the Big 10 for sucking so bad over the last few years.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
NSR, what about the Illinois game? the Illini went up twice early in that game, and Penn State kept on coming.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
define “come from behind.”
October 20th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
they were behind to illinois and beat their ass too but i guess that doesnt count either
October 20th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
I’m sorry, didn’t we just have a post where no one cared that Lou Holtz compared Rich Rodriguez to Hitler? Now people are offended because TBL ran a picture of Joe Paterno using a cane? Give me a break.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Last I checked he’s won 8 games. And you’re right, being down 17-7 and then scoring 39 unanswered hardly counts as a comeback.
Besides – who gives a shit if you can come from behind if you’re good enough to actually BE WINNING THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE GAME.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
I love how people ask who is overrating the big 10. Hmmmm, let’s see, how about every single person involved with the national rankings? They continue to put a team like Penn State or Ohio State in the top 5/10 even though the only teams they’re able to beat are shitty teams from their own conference.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
I will agree that beating OSU would not constitute a quality win, because OSU sucks balls, but it should still boost the belief in PSU to compete in a title game. It’s not going to be one of those wins that’s pushes them over the top, but gets them closer.
how is beating a top ten team on the road not a quality win? it makes no sense at all… who is USC’s quality win against then? why should they be in the NC with 1 loss?
October 20th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
The only other one I remember like that was Lemieux.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
are beamer and harbaugh good coaches?
I know harbaugh is getting shit together in b’more, but was he a good player? And he’s got a long way to go before he’s considered as good a coach as Paterno.
I’ll be honest, I’ll have to take your word on Beamer, cuz I’ve never heard anything about his playing days…will give him props for being a pretty good coach for a long time.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Are you fucking serious? I hate the Big Ten, but at some point you have to give PSU some credit. How do you not credit Clark with them being undefeated, when for the last couple of years the weakest link was at QB…
October 20th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Let me guess, sportsgal: Penn state would lose 5 games in the SEC, right?
October 20th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
so then why should USC be ranked? they can’t even beat all the TEAMS IN THEIR OWN CONFERENCE when their conference CAN’T BEAT THE MOUNTAIN WEST!!!
your argument sucks, sportsgal, it really does. should only big xii teams be ranked, even though they don’t play defense, with SEC teams? you mean that OSU or PSU couldn’t beat any of the 15-25 ranked teams like kansas or vandy or mizzou?
shove it.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
I know harbaugh is getting shit together in b’more, but was he a good player? And he’s got a long way to go before he’s considered as good a coach as Paterno.
that’s his brother…
October 20th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Girls don’t know anything about anything, guys.
/Roman’d
October 20th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
that’s his brother john…i was talking about the one that upset USC and coaches at stanford.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
If every single person is doing it, that means there are no dissenting voices and hence they can’t be overrated by comparison.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Tressel is a donkey….not even in the same league as Paterno.
@young – I never said USC had any quality wins, but I would put money on the PAC-10 being a much stronger conference than the BIG-10. I also think it’s to early to be talking about NC….there are still a few games to play and anything can happen. All I was saying was that OSU sucks major fucking donkey balls and shouldn’t even be in the top ten.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
I might give you the Illinois game though PSU led 21-14 at half and never trailed after halftime. Ditto Michigan. And don’t tell me you sat there in your living room and thought to yourself, “Boy, Michigan could actually pull this one off!” It’s easy to play with a lead. If they get down to USC or Florida or Texas, it’s going to be different than unranked Illinois or a Michigan team that mustered 10 points against Toledo.
Clark needs to prove that he can put the team on his back and lead his team to victory late in the game.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Beamer built a national program out of nothing. The only think missing from his resume is the MNC.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
but I would put money on the PAC-10 being a much stronger conference than the BIG-10
this comment is laughable…
October 20th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
see, I can’t even keep the harbaugh’s straight, must not have been that good
/wtf do I know
October 20th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
So you are saying he should stop dominating teams in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarters to make a 4th comeback possible and look good?
October 20th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
OMG look! Deadspin used a picture of Joe Paterno on a motorcycle. It totally made me forget how fucking old he is!
October 20th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
I think everyone is making way too much of Ohio State’s win over Michigan State. MSU is an average team at best. The best win so far is beating Northwestern on the road. They lost their only big non-conference game to an average Cal team. The fact is that Michigan State is not that good this year. Also if Penn State wants to start crawling back into national prominence then they must win at Ohio State this weekend. Royster > Beanie
October 20th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
i was there and beaver stadium was dead fucking silent at halftime, that thought was in at least 100k people’s heads.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
not this shit again.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
It’s poor form, CRM. What is the point of using this picture other than to try to humiliate him?
tOSU is getting two points at home, by the way ….
October 20th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
No, not to look good. For all we know this could be ‘95 Nebraska that just rolls thru every opponent. But it’s more than likely that at some point whether this week or in the title game, Clark is going to have to win a game by himself.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Wow I would of never thought this crowd would be so upset by one stupid picture
October 20th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
No, I don’t think PSU or OSU could beat Vandy, Mizzou, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, LSU, Florida, Alabama, Georgia etc. It’s not about the SEC being the best conference in the country. It’s about the fact that everyone gives more credit to the teams in the Big 10 conference than they deserve. If Michigan State was really worthy of a 22nd ranking, there’s no way the should have lost as badly as they did at home. Get your head out of your ass, Spence.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
i get your point, that we dont know if they can win a game that is close in the fourth.
thats not a reason to say theyre not for real though
October 20th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Well > Ringer > Royster
October 20th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
You’re being charitable.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
@Mike NYC- how bout Mizzou from last weekend huh? HA!
October 20th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
seriously, both the PAC-10 and BIG-10 fucking suck major balls…outside of PSU, if they win out, none of the teams in either conference belong in a NC.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
was LSU worthy of there ranking before they got scorched by florida? some teams play better than expected…it happens
October 20th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Embarrass him? Why was the picture even taken? Must be a malicious photographer.
/pretty sure Paterno realizes he has a cane
October 20th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Yes, Mizzou looked like the JV team against TEX. Not pretty. I have seriously underestimated the Longhorns …
October 20th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Nobody says shit when someone uses the picture of him falling on his ass.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
No, I don’t think PSU or OSU could beat Vandy, Mizzou, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, LSU, Florida, Alabama, Georgia etc.
you think Vandy and Kansas are better than OSU? pass the crack pipe please.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
I’m not saying they’re not for real, they very much are. But I would have reservations picking them in a big game for that reason. FWIW, I have doubts about other QB’s in the same situation.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Ringer > Royster>Rosie
/dyslexic kids game
October 20th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Big 12>SEC>Big Ten
/This year
October 20th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
sportsgal, the number 4 ranked LSU gave up 51 to Florida. Alabama put 35 on the board in the first half against Georgia. Yet you have those teams on your list of good teams that Penn State couldn’t beat. If #22 Mich State shouldn’t get beat bad, why is LSU and Georgia allowed?
October 20th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
I’d take Kansas in Lawrence. Ohio St. in Columbus or neutral. Vanderbilt, no.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Aren’t all D-1 college football players “athletic”?
TBL, this is simply a garbage post! You dont’t like the “originality” of th offense so you don’t think they deserve to be in the game? This isn’t a freaking art class. This site has gotten decidedly worse over the last couple months. It may not be a scientific opinion based on facts, but I don’t like the creative direction this blog has been taking lately. List!
October 20th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
I doubt very seriously that the pic, used here, was meant to humiliate Paterno. It’s a pic.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
SG…head is out of my ass. seeing things the same. perhaps you’re ridiculous bias over your last two NC games being “ruined” by OSU are clouding your judgement.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
*why are
October 20th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
damn, let up on us man.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
@NSR… You are on crack as well… Kansas is terrible, period.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
I haven’t seen anything that would lead me to believe that OSU is much better.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
surprised so many people are angered by the pic … the guy uses a cane. what’s the big deal?
October 20th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
can’t we just go back to the old way, no NC game, just let people fucking vote and if there are two champions, big fucking deal. at least that way people have a good reason to argue. this BCS shit is just as garbage as the system before.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
no big deal, I use a cane. I think we have some lost souls from oprah.com
October 20th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
count me in as one who is not on the vandy bandwagon. they beat a team at home on a thursday night that couldn’t score with a fistful of $100 bills in a new orleans whorehouse. all of a sudden people are jumping up and down about the ‘dores.
pass.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
Also, thanks be to Tressel for fucking up our entire conference forever because he is a bad big game coach and couldn’t win the NC in the last three years (which apparently to you goldfish is when the world was created). Thanks Tress, when we get back on our feet there will be a No Big Ten bylaw and we will get fucked by your ghost.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
TBL- You’re a dirty poop face. I hate you for this pic WAAAAAAAA!!!!
October 20th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
old Joe Pa story: spencer and i went to HS together. Joe Pa was recruiting on of our friends older bros to play at PSU. Joe Pa comes to our HS to talk to the coach and our buddy’s brother, but he arrived in a big ass limo and came in during lunch. the whole caf goes quiet and then you just hear spencer shout “i wanna have your baby!” and Joe Pa laughs, smiles/laughs/waves at spence and continues along his day.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
When you talk that much shit about how awesome Ringer and you get your asses strait handed to you, you can’t whine about the shit talk that comes your way.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
@maggs — you have no room to talk about coaching… tress owns michigan
October 20th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Good fucking enough, and we OWN Penn State… who gives a shit? Do yourselves a favor and try winning a NC for fucks sake.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
You fucking people are so annoyingly stupid, I’d like to stomp on your balls with my stiletto heels.
I think teams like shitty Kansas and shitty Missouri are better than teams from the Big 10 because they PLAY BETTER TEAMS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. Do you really think a team should be ranked 12th for beating OHIO UNIVERSITY, YOUNGSTOWN STATE, TROY UNIVERSITY AND PURDUE?!
October 20th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Vandy is way overrated and Kansas hasn’t done anything but lose.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
@ maggs –we just did, soley
October 20th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Michigan hasn’t exactly helped the conference’s cause. Rose Bowl losses to Texas and USC (twice).
There just aren’t that many big games in recent years for the Big Ten to hang their hat on.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
or you could’ve just beaten Ohio State.
because your team would’ve totally beaten 2006 florida and 2007 LSU…right.
can we stop this bullshit please?
October 20th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Royster > Beanie
Curtis Enis > Ringer
October 20th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
I’d like to stomp on your balls with my stiletto heels.
Keep going.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
LOOK AT MIZZOU’S AND KANSAS’ SCHEDULE’S FROM LAST YEAR!!!! THAT’S TOUGH? JESUS FUCKING CHRIST, SPORTSGAL.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
the whole caf goes quiet and then you just hear spencer shout “i wanna have your baby!†and Joe Pa laughs, smiles/laughs/waves at spence and continues along his day.
I didn’t know Joe Pa coached at tOSU???
October 20th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
RealAC, now thats funny shit (we always knew spence liked dudes though).
Most of the comments I’ve gone through are ridiculous, with sportsgals being the worst. Mizzou and Kansas are a joke lady, PSU would absolutely destroy them. Go ahead and hate all you want, if PSU wins saturday you’ll be watching them in January.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
I am glad work has blocked me from this site. This is the gonna be a long week.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
you take things way too personally. i was kidding. and maggs, you are the last person that should be telling people they cannot whine. I believe the entire thread can agree with me on that, how bout it?
October 20th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
re: paterno thing…seemed like the appropriate thing to say at the time. that’s all i got.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Not sure what historical Ohio State team the original poster was watching, because Beanie Wells is hardly “diving into the line”.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
I would love to if you all would STFU and win your fucking games you fucking pieces of dogshit. Fuck all of your teams, they all suck.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
check back after his first year in the NFL.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
You wear stilleto’s to work?
October 20th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
What I know Sportsgal is that Penn State has destroyed all comers so far this year. When Kansas or Missouri decide to put on their big boy pants and do the same, you can call me and tell me how great they are.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Ah, the classic Maggs comeback. When logic is thrown your way, tell everyone to shut up.

dude MSU is so awesome. They always win late in the year and make Rose Bowls. Lets talk about how great they are.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Minnesota is so awesome. They always win late in the year and make Rose Bowls. Lets talk about how great they are. STFU!!!!!
October 20th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Again, idiots, may I inform you my beef is with the Big 10 in general, not with any specific team. I like Michigan State, I partied there all the time in college. I even like Penn State. I just think in the past 5 years, teams from the Big 10 are mediocre (at best) and get higher rankings than they deserve. I don’t even fucking like Missouri or Kansas, you fucking waste of space.
And yes, I wear stilettos to work.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
I should take back everything I said about Kansas. I mean they have beaten FIU, La Tech, Sam Houston State, Iowa State, and Colorado. Back off the Jayhawks, they are the REAL DEAL, not.
As for Mizzou, I thought they were good until the last two weeks. They’ve been exposed as a really soft football team. They would rather run a track meet than play a football game.

Maggs: Meds time, stat!
October 20th, 2008 at 3:32 pm

maggs, what is wrong with people talking about the schools they cheer for or root for. they are never allowed to get excited or talk about them? heaven forbid they ever feel any confidence in them. settle down. have some tea, open up a window. get some fresh air. watch oprah.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Sorry about being late to the anti-OSU party, which obviously never gets old.
TBL, we run dives? I know we’re on national television each week (even in Manhattan)..you might want to check us out sometime. You really destroy your football credibility with statements like that.
And Vandy could beat OSU? Sure they could..upsets happen. But OSU would be a 7 point favorite on a neutral field. Kansas is tough this year and last year, but OSU’s program speaks for itself. We were here before, we’re here now.. and looking at our incredible recruiting, we’ll be here for some time to come.

I do like how defenders of the Big 10 can’t actually defend the Big 10. They always have to resort to the, “well look at ______, they’re not very good either,” argument.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
That’s dangerous on stage Sportsgal..
October 20th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
@sparty
Nothing wrong with it but don’t cry when you get it shoved back down your throat. There is no “laying off dude” when you go on a week long Ringer rimmer and then you lose. Guess what YOU LOST! HAAAAAA! Lesson1: talk all the shit you want, but when you have to eat crow then STFU and eat it.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
so did i. damn classes getting in the way.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
every argument is like that because, until we get a playoff, this is nothing more than organized mass-speculation.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
maggs, where did I say anything about Minny being “so awesome”?? I’m pretty sure I just pointed out that you melt down when people call you out.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
why do i have to STFU? explain. you haven’t and you guys suck big dick. like huge dirty Toledo dick.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
And that is also the basis of all college football rankings… great point! I can’t wait to post this and then go back up and read it again, it was so fucking awesome.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
@sportsgal116 – Again idiot, teams from the Big 12, SEC, ACC, Pac 10 also receiver higher and lower rankings based on the bias of how their conference is perceived.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
But NSR..we already went over this. SEC is living off two title game blowouts (one of which was expected.. LSU last year, when healthy, was the best team in the country). Why do those games have to say at all about this year in the big 10..or even in the SEC. Are Big 10 temas supposed to be afraid of Ole Miss/Vandy/S. Carolina/Arkansas/Miss/Tennesee?? That’s half the conference. Hey..we have bad teams too that you don’t have to be scared of..but let’s not make it seem like the chasm is that big, or even a chasm in the first place.
And the jury is still very much out on LSU and Georgia, if you ask me. Bama and Florida are for real, but could both easily lose again.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
@maggs — you are really having trouble dealing with your football program’s state…just face it, they blow

October 20th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
Okay, NSR, Penn state is top 10 nationally in scoring, scoring defense, total offense, and total defense. i don’t give a shit if the rest of the conference is fucking high school teams, if penn state wins all of their games, they will play in the national title game. i have a lot of confidence that they will beat Texas or florida or whomever else, because they have a good and balanced offense and defense. if they don’t, i’ll be bummed, but dems the berries.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Or, you could point out, you know, actual wins by the Big 10 or something.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
You went on a year long Ringer for president rant and then you guys got killed AT HOME! SO THAT is why you have to STFU. YOUR TEAM LOST YOU MORON> What else is there to say? Let it simmer for a bit. Loser.

Magglio Merkin – Are you going to crawl into a hole when MSU beats UM?
October 20th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
If you look at strength of the entire conference this year based on quality of teams from top to bottom including non conference wins and who corso likes then the Big 12 and Big 10 are tops. Followed by the SEC and ACC. Next is the Pac 10 followed by the Mountain West. Then the WAC and last is the big east. It is called science people.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
This was funny.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
@NSR… The Big 10 hasn’t had much leg to stand on over the last couple of years.
It’s funny though. No one had this thought until the Florida/OSU game. There wasn’t a soul outside of SEC Country (and few there too) that really thought Florida could beat OSU that year. Ohio State didn’t show up, Florida taxed their ass, and the Big 10 bashing commences.
The Big 10 was not good last year, period. They weren’t that bad for the 5 years before that. They are still a couple years away from getting back to really good football (and longer if you are a friend of Ann Arbor’s “team”). Ohio State has taken advantage of the bad teams by winning league titles. It’s not their fault. It’s the fault of the rest of the conference for not living up to their end of the bargain.
Ohio State would be better served playing better teams week in and week out during the conference schedule. They can’t help that the majority of the league has been down over the past few years.

October 20th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
How come when OSU won the title in 2002 and almost lost some conference games.. the consensus wasn’t how great the Big 10 was?? The SEC gets the benefit of the doubt frow now b/c most of them won’t play anyone out of conference.. they then play tough in conference (like EVERY other conference), and that makes them “brutally tough” top to bottom.. Yawn..
October 20th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
John Awesome, I have no problem with that. But you’ll excuse me if I have some reservations.
cursed, I agree. But like it or not, history does matter. Many of the players are the same. The programs are pretty much the same. The offensive and defensive schemes are pretty much the same from year to year. The coaches are pretty much the same. Like I said, and as TBL pointed out, it’s been a LONG time since the Big 10 has had any win of great significance to hang their hat on. And that wasn’t a good Texas team that Ohio St. beat. The Big 10 has a ton of baggage right now.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
we gonna party in ann arbor like it is 1990. nice catch desmond!
October 20th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Good. We have as many NC’s as you in the last two years and less NC losses. Good for us. You know where that leads us? Fucking same place man.
Yeah, and you have 0 victories against OSU and 0 Big Ten Championships in that same time period.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
yes…don’t you remember people openly mocking the big 12 because the North division was so bad. Getting housed in marquee games always reflects poorly on that teams conference, whether it is deserved or not. The last two years–as well as this one–the Big 10 has been a one trick, or two trick pony. Much like the Pac 10. Aside from the top 2 teams in the big 10 there is not much quality.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
so malcolm jenkins, beanie wells and terrelle pryor aren’t athletic? javon ringer isn’t athletic? vontae davis and juice williams aren’t? daryll clark, evan royster and the stable of WR’s PSU has aren’t either? because that seems to be what youre insinuating, TBL.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
How come when OSU won the title in 2002 and almost lost some conference games..
October 20th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
This is true. If you look at that Florida team, they struggled to win in the SEC. In fact, they beat OSU by a greater margin than ANY of the SEC teams they played.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
@ maggs — you guys have really performed well in the big game at the end of the year against us… probably a little frustrating. and NO, we aren’t in the same place, check out the recruiting.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
THAT’S BECAUSE IN CONFERENCE PLAY WILL ALWAYS BE CLOSER BECAUSE TEAMS ARE FAMILIAR WITH EACH OTHER…THIS HAS BEEN PROVEN EACH AND EVERY FUCKING YEAR…HOW SHITTY PAC-10 TEAMS CAN HANG WITH USC…
dear lord.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Arizona State, Cal, West Virginia, Oklahoma State, Boise State, South Florida, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, UCLA, Miami, Florida State, Virginia Tech and Colorado disagree with this statement.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Exactly. It’s not just that Ohio St. and Michigan have lost in BCS games recently. They’ve been outright embarrassed.
I made the comparison earlier and I’ll do it again. The top of the Big Ten reminds me of the Nebraska teams of the late 80’s/early 90’s. They roll thru a relatively easy nonconference schedule, then blow thru a weak conference, only to get embarrassed by a faster, more athletic Florida St. or Miami team. This is what is happening now.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
I am glad that I do not take sports as seriously as Maggs. I enjoy them to the point that I blog about them and watch them frequently, but damn, I am glad they don’t wig me out like that.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Imagine how many yards/game Knowshon, Beanie or any other top back would have if they got 30 carries a game. Ringer is certainly athletic but his numbers are grossly inflated due to racking up yards against crap (where was this against OSU) and getting over 30 carries a game (or at least close to 30 as I am not sure what his exact stats are).
October 20th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
and then you forget about the 1994-95, and 1995-96 nebraska teams that were probably the greatest teams of all time.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
@youngstown
Jesus fucking christ dude. NEWS FLASH: OHIO STATE HAS ALWAYS OUTRECRUITED UM. YOU DON’T HAVE ANOTHE RBIG TEN SCHOOL IN YOUR STATE.
God help us, because all of you can probably vote.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
You’ve got to be kidding me. They beat the #1 team by more points than anyone else in the conference and this is due to conference play always being tougher? Always? They couldn’t muster one 20-point win in conference. Delusional.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
Bingo….NEB is the 90’s is a perfect comparison. The best of the Big 10 (Ohio State) feasts on bad teams with bad offenses to the point where they have some seriously insane stats (like last year’s 10 ppg on defense). They then play teams that have speed–sick speed–at every position, not just some, and they get exposed. I would look for this to change with OSU now that they have a seriously dynamic player at the QB position for 3 years.

beanie got 31 carries but only like 160 or so yards…before he got 30 against MSU last year and got 220, and repeated that against Michigan last year.
not hating on javon because he’s great, but he didn’t stand a chance against OSU’s 8 and 9 man fronts. imgaine him on a team with more than one weapon…brainsplosion.

October 20th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
and now UM is being out recruited in its own state.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
You’re talking to a Nebraska homer here. What caused the turnaround for NU was a change in recruiting philosophy. It was a complete 180 from what they used to do. I don’t see that happening in the Big 10, yet.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
This is because TO realized that getting big, strong players was less important than getting fast players. Look at his teams in the 80’s and you will see a team that owned the Big 8 and could never get passed the uber-athletic Miami and FSU teams (though they were hosed in the 93 title game). Until he changed the type of player he brought in they lost almost all of the big bowl games.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
I heard Ringer wanted to go to OSU and Tressel vouched for him but his grades were so fucked up he couldnt get in.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
maggs, how would you know what i know, if you do not read it?
October 20th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
no…my point is florida didn’t beat anyone big in conference because the other SEC teams they played knew what to expect. it’s not always the case, but more often than not, teams in conference are going to keep things closer…look at 2000-01 miami, arguably the most talented team ever, they almost lost a few games to some pretty weak teams in conference…that shouldn’t have happened.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
he has been compared to Katzenmoyer.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:59 pm

October 20th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
exactly…gods, you’re a smart dude. you know your college football, that’s for sure.
and i don’t expect you to know anything about OSU recruiting, but Tressel is doing something quite similar.

/fuckin’ john cooper
October 20th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Who freaking cares if players go to class…and I am serious. Players like Katz and other studs are going to get their masters in football so the career fairs (read: pro draft) like what they bring to the table. If I were a projected top pick I could give a shit about any class, especially swahili. I know schools like to put up the facade that these kids are “student athletes” but we know they are not. Student athletes play soccer, volley ball and tennis…not football and basketball.
October 20th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
The speed needs to come on defense, which might be what you’re referring to. Nebraska still had the power run game, though it was better in the mid 90’s with Frazier, Phillips, and Green than before. But to find out what we’re talking about, look up Terrell Farley, who was one of the best LB’s in Nebraska history.

ever think that maybe he wants to recruit speed? And also Will Campbell says “Hi!” (best player in Michigan and is coming to Michigan) So does Jeremy Jackson (highest rated player in 2010 from Michigan and already commited to UM). Great points though. Riveting.
October 20th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Sparty the MSU ass spanking Photoshop is a masterpiece.
October 20th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
They should not get payed exactly. What I would do is make sure that their scholarship was for the full amount, which would include everything. If a kid goes to Notre Dame and the school charges joe the student 30K a year, why shouldn’t that kid get the same contingent upon him graduating. You could also make it to where the student would get the full amount if he/she had a certain GPA at the end of their university career. If there was an actual incentive to do well in school the kids would make the effort. As it stands now all they need to do is pass as they are fine. So when the kids blows his knee and can’t get a roster spot he ends up getting into stupid shit because he is uneducated due to the fact that he did not have to be. This would result in the term “student athlete” actually meaning something other than a stupid buzzword.
October 20th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
your idol punched a guy and got ran out of town, you got fucking destroyed by USC and psu is going to pound you. Yet you talk alot of shit because you are an o$u homer, which sucks even more for you. See you guys Nov. 22nd.

How sweet is it that Michigan sucks dick this year. I mean year after year, spoiled Michigan fans bitch and moan that Lloyd can’t beat OSU and they need to get rid of him. Then they get their wish and he leaves and now they get beat at home by Toledo. This is proof that there is a God and he is glorious.

October 20th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
to be fair, the loss to appy state was much more memorable.

Corky even you should be smart enough to know that preseason rankings mean nothing.
October 20th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
To be fair his point was that we have sucked for a while and a pre season ranking of 5 LAST SEASON is not long ago. We also were ranked top 5 the end of 06. SOOooooooooooooo long ago. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LOng. Jeeze i was all of like 1 year younger then. Wow, amazingly long ago.
October 20th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Guess what? Michigan is a worse team than Ohio State, but that doesn’t meant much when the Big 10 sucks more than almost every conference in Division I football.
October 20th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
How about finishing 06 in the top 5. Two years ago. Or do end of year rankings mean nothing as well? Moron.

Hey! A fellow MAC member! We rule at everything else, so we had to give up being good in football. I’ll survive.

sportsgal’s comments are starting to get more ridiculous than maggs…sad

Try 8/9. Keep losing to 1aa schools and Toledo and you might be top 5 in the espn Bottom 10 this year. Loser.

youngstown, your attempts to insult me are both sad and pathetic.

Mmonast – very fine memories of BG – older brother went there. Lost my virginity up there when visiting my brother after picking up a drunken whore at what used to be Kamakazees? You will never hear me say a negative thing about BG.

kamakazees is still around…a person was shot outside of that bar my junior year i believe
same kind words for OU…lots of friends went there and OU is a great party school, derby days (now called 4 fest now? whatever number it is) was/is a great time

So the Big 10 is worse than almost every other conference?
Except for, according to SG, the MAC, Big East, Mountain West, ACC, and Conference USA.
So by most, you mean 3. And the Pac-10 really isn’t close to being better than the Big 10.

new commenter i’d like to meet most: Mags Merkin. I think i can speak for everyone here, right?
you have got to be kidding me, Maggs seems like a total douche to me.

It’s so refreshing to come on this blog and see people’s arguments dissected and picked apart by guys with teeny tiny penises so they can feel better about themselves.
October 20th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
haha, three guys just beat the shit out of a cop behind Kami’s
October 20th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
I got a big penis.
October 20th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
You’d prefer we just take everything at face value, regardless of the leaps of faith your arguments generally require?
October 20th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
doesnt surprise me cool rick
October 20th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
mmonast – check out these dudes
Budman would have stepped in to break it up
October 20th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
No Nick, I just wish you’d stop being so bitter and angry. Girls will like you even if you have a small penis, just get really good at oral.

Gotta say reading these posts that it is pretty hard not to really dislike most of the posters from Ohio and Michigan (except for Sparty, only sometimes-lol). You guys sound like psychopaths! Love to sit in a rubber room and talk football and politics with you guys….not!
October 20th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
cool rick those dudes look waaaaay out there, definitely the type of crowd @ kazi’s budman vs those 2 would be a great fight
my junior yr, our house was broken into during fall break, they caught the guys and it turned out they have been robbing bg college houses for years and they found tens of thousands in merchandise and even child porn…it was a big deal, we were all told we would need to be ready to be witnesses in the trial, never needed to be but was pretty crazy none the less.

FWIW, Sagarin’s ratings have the Big Ten the 2nd-ranked conference, behind *drumroll* the Big Twelve.
1. Big Twelve
2. Big Ten
3. SEC
4. ACC
5. Pac 10
6. Big East
7. Mountain West
8. Independents
9. WAC
10. MAC
Again, FWIW.
