Top Shelf: Melrose Breaks into the Win Column
NHL October 22nd. 2008, 11:30am
Lee Diekemper on the night in the NHL.
Flames 2, Capitals 1: A pair of Flames second period goals sunk the Capitals. Alex Ovechkin has only scored in one game this season. Maybe he needs to troll the ‘net for a Russian slumpbuster?
Lightning 3, Atlanta 2 (OT): Vinnie Lecavalier’s power play goal in overtime gave the Lightning their first win of the season. Maybe goalie Mike Smith should wear the Saw mask more often. To honor Mullet Melrose’s first win as Lightning coach, the team broke down and bought him a Liz Claiborne gift set.
Sabres 3, Bruins 2 (SO): After a strong start, the Bruins fizzled. The Sabres held the Bruins to just 16 shots in the final two periods and overtime. Thomas Vanek’s shootout goal pushed Buffalo over the top.
Blue Jackets 4, Canucks 2: Derek Dorsett will long remember his first NHL goal. It came in the second and stood up as the game-winner. Rick Nash had an assist and an empty net goal.

My Sabres are looking like a much better team than “expert predictors” expected.

It must be hockey season. I smell a goalie controversy in Philthy.
