On to Game Two of the World Series …
Baseball October 23rd. 2008, 6:15pm
For all the negative talk of bandwagon Rays fans, I don’t know of any other fanbase that boasts a washed up former Tag Team Champion as one of their biggest fans. Brian Knobbs is so dedicated he managed to get kicked out of Game 5 of the ALCS at Fenway. True dedication, for sure.
In a few hours, it’s James Shields (14-8, 3.56 ERA) vs. Brett Myers (10-13, 4.65 ERA). Historical stat junkies note the Phillies are in a good place because the team that wins Game 1 has won 10 of the last 11 World Series. Rays starter James Shields was 0-2 in the ALCS, and hasn’t lost three consecutive starts since losing four in a row from June 15 – July 1, 2007.
While much of the talk post-game 1 revolved around the 0-for-12, 5 K, two double play performance of Tampa’s Longoria, Pena and Upton, Philly’s trio of Burrell, Howard and Rollins combined for zero hits in 12 at bats with seven strike outs. Said trio is 2-for-9 with two RBI against Shields. Scary for Rays fans to know your team lost a game at home when three of Philly’s four offensive leaders were emphatically shut down.
I hope to god Knobbs travels to Philadelphia for Games 3 and 4. He’ll get along just fine with the Philly faithful.
Local and National Linkies … …
Ryan Howard needs to get the bat off his shoulders.
B.J. Upton does not care about your hustle questions.
Some blacks are at the World Series, sayeth Yahoo.
The Rays might be too cool for their own good. I don’t buy it, but I linked it.

Hopefully Philly figured out how to construct a lineup tonight.

Man, I was one pissed off 3rd grader when the Nasty Boys beat the Hart Foundation for the titles at Wrestlemania VII.
October 23rd, 2008 at 6:33 pm
Knobbs is the greatest man alive. Fact.

Where’s Saggs to give security his shitty flying elbow drop?
October 23rd, 2008 at 8:07 pm
is it wrong of me to write that im pulling hard for the phillies tonight? my wager withstanding … i can’t recall a game 1 win that was ever given the “well, they weren’t beaten hamels. commence the ass-kicking.”
everyone seems so certain that since the Rays beat up on Red Sox pitching, the offense is unstoppable. hey, the Patriots offense was legendary last year. how’d that work out in the super bowl?
there are no givens in sports … hence, GO phillies
October 23rd, 2008 at 8:15 pm
anyone heard bubba the love sponge today? he must be getting some good interviews outta this.
October 23rd, 2008 at 8:17 pm
if the Pats and Giants would have played a best-of-seven, the outcome would have been different. I’d say this series is more about pitching. If the Phills can get anything from their other starters they should take the series. If not, the Rays stand a good chance to bring another unappreciated championship to Florida.

Ok that’s it, I’m being Jeannie Zelasko for Halloween.
October 23rd, 2008 at 8:48 pm
awesome. 30 mins ago, decided i was confident enough in the Phillies to wager on this game. hop in the shower.
score: 2-0 tampa. wtf?
October 23rd, 2008 at 8:52 pm
ill, i hear you on the best of 7. but tampa was beating up on damaged goods in beckett. lester had 2 very good starts and he’s being hailed as beckett jr.
how about the Rays just … got hot? 9, 9, 13, 7 against boston was unorthodox. nobody could have predicted that. so why can’t those same bats go silent for a few games against Philly?
October 23rd, 2008 at 8:53 pm
finally, ryan howard snaps out of it
whack. nice leadoff double
October 23rd, 2008 at 8:58 pm
swing the gosh darn bat, kid
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:02 pm
Watching Dobbs just look at those 3 strikes was painful. How the hell do you not even take one cut at that at bat.
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:03 pm
Great, MMA depicted as “human cockfighting” again, only in a Vince Vaughn movie. More people will listen to that than John McCain. F-ing Hollywood.
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:04 pm
what a great 3 mins to open the office!
michael in rare form
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:10 pm
For once (and I mean once) I agree with McCarver. That was a bad call on the strikeout.
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:11 pm
i also find myself laughing at Andy much more
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Took the under in this Aub/WVU game and they put up 27 @ half??!! WTF?
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:13 pm
the 1st season with andy when he was trying to be michaels number 2 was good stuff
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:14 pm
why does sharp have this creepy albino looking guy pitching their plasma tvs?
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:26 pm
I’ll throw a few bills down for a hug.
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:32 pm
knocked up is on one of hte HBOs … can someone alert me to any WS runs?
wacky end to the office. jim/pam are obviously in trouble (because jim will be insecure), and michael/holly will obviously end in disaster
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:46 pm
4-0 rays on a squeeze play
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:47 pm
TBL, Tampa lost games to Boston because of rare errors from Longoria and Bartlett. Pitching and defense wins game. Tampa is better.
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Lets go Rays

Dennis Reynolds: An Erotic Life.
Brilliant.
October 23rd, 2008 at 10:04 pm
Benji: I totally agree.
TBL: The Rays didn’t just “get hot”. They had the best record in the AL, and even with all the problems the Red Sox had in that series they were still the 2nd best team in baseball…after the Rays. The score so far tonight is no surprise, and the Rays should win in 5 or 6.
October 23rd, 2008 at 10:18 pm
The Phillies have hit the ball hard off of Shields all night, just haven’t gotten a lot strung together when they are able to find holes. Howard finally hitting the ball well and he’s lead off 3 innings. It happens.
October 23rd, 2008 at 10:21 pm
gfunk, TBL’s baseball knowledge is suspect to say the least. i think he just says shit to see people’s reaction. if you’re new here and are looking for some good baseball analysis, click on my name.
/i’m a whore, i know
October 23rd, 2008 at 10:25 pm
I don’t disagree with TBL’s premise that a 7 game series is quite random though.
gfunk, if you want good college hockey talk, click on my name.
/bigger whore
October 23rd, 2008 at 10:54 pm
benji – i love the ’suspect baseball knowledge’ line. it’s even better when hef is around.
i switched back just in time to see Howard step up with 2 on. come through big guy …
October 23rd, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Buck didn’t say ‘and the Price is Right’? Unfortunate.
October 23rd, 2008 at 10:55 pm
so four insanely high-scoring games against one of the best pitching staffs in baseball was expected? you saw that happening? We’re not even talking about 5-6 runs here.
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:02 pm
TBL…I am glad you love the line cause it’s true
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:05 pm
TBL..The Red Sox weren’t one of the best pitching staffs in Baseball..not bad but Hardly one of the best… the Rays have played the Red Sox tough all year..WON 97 games and The Division…I call it playing up to the standard of baseball they played all season
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:11 pm
“Not bad but hardly one of the best.” What are you basing this on?
So Lester wasn’t being heralded as Beckett Jr after two great starts?
So Beckett isn’t the best postseason pitcher currently active?
Dice K wasn’t 18-3 with an ERA only 3rd to Lee and Halladay?
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:15 pm
finally, the phillies get a run!
price is hittable! sweet.
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:15 pm
Rays fans are new to baseball, but, uh, what were they doing the “hey hey hey hey…goodbye” chant during Victorino’s at bat for?
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Come on, you serious? Maybe they thought Victorino fouled out.
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:17 pm
I can’t believe I’m gonna say this, but I see where TBL is coming from. Lester was a top 5 starter in the AL this year, if Beckett wasn’t hurt he is great, Daisuke, well I still don’t know what to make of that guy.
In the regular season, the Sox scored about 70 more runs than the Rays, and allowed just 23 more. Now it has been proven that a run saved is worth more than a run scored, but not by that much.
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:20 pm
Baseball talk sucks, worse than politics. Everyone thinks they are right, and generally can;t wait to tell you so.
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:21 pm
*can’t.
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:21 pm
I’m guessing a Phillies fan got ejected in a section near the mic.
In the ALCS the crowd would chant that whenever a Red Sox fan got ejected.
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:21 pm
Johnny Gomes is hammered.
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:38 pm
Has Ken Rosenthal officially taken the torch from Jim Gray as “annoyingly twerpy sideline guy”?
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:40 pm
How tall is Ken Rosenthal, like 5′3?
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:41 pm
I am basing it on Dice K being a shit show besides his record..Beckett being hurt half the year, Wakefield, Byrd, and Buckholz getting serious innings, the bullpen besides Papelbon being iffy…I base it on performance and fact..sorry TBL…they were good not one of the best. Lester was good this year…But it is akin to me saying the Met pitching staff was one of the best in baseball because Johan was great and Pelfrey was OK..please..
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Oh and the Sox were 4th in the AL in total pitching stats and 9th in Baseball..Good not great.
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:44 pm
An ERA+ of 159 (league average being 100) is a “shit show”? He’s top 3 Cy Young this year.
Comparing the Red Sox staff to the Mets just isn’t very smart.
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:45 pm
And here is you link cause I know it is going to be asked for
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:46 pm
s1wreeze…He belongs nowhere near anyone’s Cy Young ballot
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:49 pm
Yeah I’d hold off on the Daisuke Cy talk, but he’s not total dogshit.
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:49 pm
s1..go take a look..the Mets are 11th right after the Red Sox 9th in overall and I wasn’t making the comparison because the Mets were so good either..Lester was good..Matsusaka had a real nice season but for his 167 innings pitched (hardly Cy worthy)The rest of their staff was Meh
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:50 pm
fetch..he is a 3rd starter who had a nice year. He pitched limited innings because he threw a ton of pitches and walked guys. He did Avg a SO an inning and had a good season but he made Tito go to the Pen early often and that pen was weak
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:52 pm
Oh and look at the individuals who make up the Sox staff and tell me how great they are..they were good not great..period so the Rays teeing off on them is not some shocking event
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:53 pm
I will completely agree with you if you say that Dice-K is the least fun pitcher to watch in all of baseball, because he’s a nibbler and he walks tons of guys. But he’s proven to be effective, one of the most effective pitchers in the American League. You cannot write him off that simply.
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:57 pm
S!..My shitshow comment was based on that but he is not CY worthy..he had a nice season but limited his innings because of high pitch counts his WHIP was 1.32…his only difference between this year and last year was ERA (or overall runs allowed) granted it’s important but he is not going to have too many 2.9 ERA seasons the way he goes about his business
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:58 pm
I guess my bigger overall point is that TBL was Shocked by the Great Pitching staff of the Sox giving up big runs to the Rays…calling them “hot” The Rays have been proven to score in bunches all season and the Red Sox do not have great pitching (at least when Beckett is hurt) so I am not as shocked and don’t think the high scoring was out of the norm.
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:59 pm
I don’t see how a 1.32 WHIP is terrible.
October 24th, 2008 at 12:00 am
is it Cy worthy? Is it great?
October 24th, 2008 at 12:01 am
I must pull back..I am not calling Dice-K the worst pitcher who ever lived…he’s good…Not great..and if he gets beat up by an opponent is it shocking?
October 24th, 2008 at 12:05 am
To me it is even worse because he led the league in hits per nine innings with 6.87 per 9…So he issued a shit load of walks…this season he worked his way out of them..last year he did not..which is the real Dice-K I don’t know..but he is not great..he is a nice pitcher for a staff..and a good number 3 when a Healthy Beckett and Lester are 1-2
October 24th, 2008 at 12:05 am
the worse being he let up very few hits but issued a lot of walks
October 24th, 2008 at 12:06 am
I disagree RWH. I think Dice-BB is in fact the worst pitcher who ever lived. Plus I heard that he doesn’t recycle.
October 24th, 2008 at 12:07 am
Lester is the #1 of that staff now. How did he lead the league in hits per 9, and issue a lot of walks but still have a low WHIP?
October 24th, 2008 at 12:10 am
When the Red Sox come to town, you must WHIP it. When Lester’s on the mound, you must WHIP it. Uhhh, WHIP it good.
/it’s getting late.
October 24th, 2008 at 8:17 am
Funny, when it’s a Red Sox fan getting kicked out, I believe it’s known as “douchebaggery”, not “dedication”.
October 24th, 2008 at 8:43 am
i bet Nasty Boy was hearing it from the Boston fans. I would have loved to hear the insults. You can credit Knobbs for the Rayhawk
