The Patriots vs. ESPN. Pull Up a Chair, Won’t You?
ESPN, NFL October 24th. 2008, 10:45am
Rough week on the PR front for ESPN. Last night, the Patriots did the unthinkable - they released a statement directly contradicting an ESPN report from the intrepid Wendi Nix. Thursday morning, the Boston Herald reported that Tom Brady has had two additional procedures on his knee to clean up an infection. No response from the Patriots. Later Thursday, Nix, not wanting to simply report what the Herald was reporting, added that the team was pissed off about it. Uh-oh.
“Today, ESPN cited an unnamed source who supposedly expressed the feelings of the Patriots ‘organization.’ This unsubstantiated report does not represent the team’s views whatsoever. We have supported Tom Brady one hundred percent from day one of this process and will continue to do so. We issued a statement last Saturday expressing our complete organizational support for Tom. That support includes all aspects of the process. Unfortunately, our statement was not mentioned or referenced in ESPN’s report. Today, we reiterate our total support for Tom as he recovers from his injury.”
For what it’s worth, Nix didn’t parachute into Boston for this report - she’s familiar with the market, having gone to school there and worked there for a few years before getting snapped up by the WWL. She’s also married to a Boston Red Sox executive and resides there.
The Patriots, under Belichick, have to be one of the most difficult-to-deal-with franchises in the NFL. He’s always tried to control the message - moreso than any other coach in the league, in our opinion - and keep the media at a safe distance. Perhaps that is because he detests the media. We’re most interested in seeing how ESPN handles this. This statement is a pretty large slap in the face and will do one of two things: 1) Make ESPN back down from reporting on this story or 2) Make ESPN angry and get on the offensive against the Patriots.
We could - could - be on the cusp of a first: What if ESPN brass decides: ‘You know what, we don’t need the Patriots. Their run is over. Let’s aggressively report this out with Mort, Clayton and the gang.’ ESPN would get no cooperation from the Patriots, but like it matters, they’re not on MNF anymore this season, and Tom Brady’s still eight months before becoming relevant again. In eight months, all these old wounds will be forgotten.

Since Nix is in bed with a front office Red Sawx guy does this mean there is going to be an inter Boston team front office fight? Dood naw brah you didn’t just do that brah!

Dude, this is a great post/article and seems very natural. Why don’t you do more posts on this kind of stuff? It reads well, seems to be well researched, and has great insightful opinion.

Belichick doesn’t forget. He bides his time.

Tommy Boy is not going to be relevant next year either. I would be surprised if he’s ready for the start of the season, and even more surprised if he actually played well (ask Donovan, Dante, hell even Peyton). It will be 2010 before the real Tommy returns, if ever again.

trust me, i am no defender of the four-letter. but i smell damage control by the patriots.

Santonio Holmes busted with pot

Why would we trust anything that is ever reported by the WWL? Most of it is just plain incorrect (Herbstreit), made up or stolen from another source.

Wendi Nix is the hotness. I just wish she’d move somewhere warmer so she could get rid of the overcoats and sweaters.

I read Nix’s article from the 22nd (which oddly enough I cannot find anywhere in the ESPN archives anymore), and it’s completely different in tone than what she says here
In the video from yesterday, she says the Patriots would have preferred Brady use their doctors, but he has a right not to, and the Patriots admit that his infection was more a result of bad luck than using a bad doctor. But after reading her on the 22nd, I was left with the impression that the Patriots were angry with Brady.
I think Nix was called out on her bullshit.

This all started with Tom “they hate their coach” Jackson, and was fueled further by The Matt Walsh Show. I laughed at Wendy Nix’s report, as if there is anyone in the Patriots organization who will give ESPN the time of day anymore. How they can justify running that “story” and not the Brett Favre one is absolutley HILARIOUS.

Didn’t Nix used to weigh close to like three bills?

I love Foxsports’ story about this… and I love this new rivalry they have. Go Fox!

I seem to remember this as well.
He’s an idiot. Had a cigar-sized blunt sitting in the car. The cops were looking for a drug mule/carrier in a dark SUV, which he was driving.

Nix is hot by Boston standard. Which is to say not very hot.

In protest of ESPN’s report, I’m cutting off the sleeves to my sweatshirt.

What was that big thump sound? Was it Boston sports falling back to earth or all of Boston’s bandwagon fans jumping back on the ground

Yet another example of an argument where both sides deserve to lose.

ESPN is fucking retarded. They are clearly in the tank for Farvra, and they showed it by ignoring the Glazer story. They clearly hate the Patriots, which is perfectly fine, and showed it by trying to blow up this Pats mad at Brady bullshit story. I am failing to understand why they can’t just report the fucking news instead of trying to create/control news.

No proof that Nix was ever big. I think you are thinking of Shelley (I love Keyshawn) Smith…
October 24th, 2008 at 11:37 am
People shouldn’t forget that the Patriots should be given no leeway and they have no credibility.
Their head coach is a proven cheat and a liar.

I met Wendi Nix before she went on ESPN, and she was definitely not a big girl. She might have fluctuated some. But I saw her right at the end of First Take or whatever that show is called now, and she was looking nice.

LOL

so ESPN’s new policy is to check their sources publicly after they run a story instead of before?
can’t really be ESPN’s fault since that seems to be the problem with media in general these days. You’d think they’d try to learn how to use The Google a bit better to get facts though.

The organization that cheated for years is now on its high horse?
