Ballin’: No Curry or Marbury, No Problem
NBA October 30th. 2008, 11:00am
Suns 103, Spurs 98: Similar to Game One in the playoffs last season, except the Spurs couldn’t buy a triple in the final minute. Parker and Duncan split 64 and Manu didn’t play. The balanced Suns had five players score in double figures and Nash had 13 assists.
Raptors 95, Phillies 84: Expect to see a lot of these – Bosh and newbie Jermaine O’Neal combined to shoot 16-for-31, score 44 points and collect 19 rebounds. Philly shot just 34 percent and committed 17 turnovers.
New Jersey 95, Washington 85: Jamison and Butler struggled mightily (9-for-29, 1-for-9 from three), and the Nets got a surprising 17 points from Yi Jianlian in a mild upset on the road.
New York 120, Miami 115: Strange opener – Eddy Curry and Stephon Marbury didn’t play, and rookie Michael Beasley (4-for-14) was outshone by fellow rookie Mario Chalmers (17-8-7). Sweet dunk-back by Wilson Chandler (17 points off the bench)
Atlanta 99, Orlando 85: The Magic couldn’t shoot from the field (37 percent), three (16 percent) or the line (63 percent) and Dwight Howard’s 22-15-5 were wasted. Pietrus netted 20 in his debut for the Magic.

Suns are going to win all 82 games this year.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Can Bosh play defense every night? If he plays like the Olympics the Raptors are gonna be really good.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:03 am
Everyone keeps telling me the Phillies won the WS last night.. but apparantly they lost to the Raptors.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:03 am
No write up on how Darrell Arthur was the best rookie to play last night?
October 30th, 2008 at 11:03 am
My boy Wilson Chandler representin Benton Harbor High. I love it.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:03 am
Dwight Howard’s 22-15-5 blocks were wasted
damn right TBL. He also added 5 steals to that stat line. Dwight was 6/13 from the free throw line. I love the Pietrus addition. JJ Redick added 2 points in 19 minutes. He needs to go
As clown said ” not exactly making it rain” last night. Next up, Memphis who played well against Houston last night
October 30th, 2008 at 11:04 am
Well I’ve already given up on the Wizards this season, and the next few seasons most likely. Oh well, at least there’s always GW basketball…no, wait…
October 30th, 2008 at 11:05 am
Chalmers and Jason Thompson had good nights too. Kevin Love as well.
The Knicks were really fun to watch last night. They actually might be game this season.
I was worried about this earlier, and looks like it might happen, but Beasley should not be playing on the perimeter. He should never attempt more than 2 or 3 3’s in a game.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:05 am
anyone else see the thing with shaq and pop at the beginning of the suns/spurs game? that was pretty funny.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:05 am
Jeff Kent hates Rudy Gay.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Minnesotas new court looks awesome. They have new unis as well. I had to watch a little bit of Kevin Love and big Al last night.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Do tell Spence…
October 30th, 2008 at 11:07 am
It was funny when it was a joke. It wasn’t funny when he employed that strategy at the end of the first half. Bush. League.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:07 am
soooo…there’s a picture of the rockets vs. the grizz, but no mention of the rockets vs. the grizz?
October 30th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Didn’t see Chalmers play but I did watch Arthur and was impressed. Can’t say the same for Mayo. I think that Love stat line will be pretty consistent all season.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:07 am
The were 12/13 from the FT line. Dwight should be taking notes.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:08 am
No Pistons/Pacers write up with talk of Curry’s first win as a head coach?
October 30th, 2008 at 11:10 am
walfredo…you know how shaq called out the spurs for employing the hack-a-shaq last year in the playoffs…so right after the tip, pop calls for an intentional foul on shaq. much laughter was shared by all.
Hef…it’s not bush. you realize shaq is a pro basketball player right? god forbid he FUCKIGN LEARN TO MAKE A FREE THROW.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:10 am
Pistons/Pacers was relevant in ‘03.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:10 am
Man, those Phillies were awful against the Raptors last night. I thought they Phillies were going to be good.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:11 am
Yea spence I saw that shit Pop gave Shaq 2 thumbs up with his hideous cat beard.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:12 am
I agree, but it slows the game down to the point where it’s unwatchable. Let me rephrase: from a fan’s perspective (not just a Suns fan, but a fan of basketball) it bores me to fucking tears.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:12 am
Pop and Shaq are two guys that I’ve always hated but they’ve been around so long I kinda like ‘em now. Hate to admit, but it’s like Jeter too.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:12 am
Pop’s beard > Oden’s
October 30th, 2008 at 11:13 am
I dont mind. I hate when teams call a time out to advance the ball though. that is bush
October 30th, 2008 at 11:13 am
Hef…i’ll agree with you on that. i actually love watching the spurs, but when they turn it into a FT shooting contest, it’s fuckin’ awful.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:13 am
Josh Smith was an animal last night and Joe Johnson dominated with 25 pts in the 4th quarter. How is their no mention of the Hawks in the blurb about the Hawks game? The Hawks only win so many. Need their props when they can get them.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:13 am
Shaq sucks at feethrows. He’s like 8′ tall, he’s practically eye level with the basket and he can’t make a freethrow. That’s bush league.
Guess I’m glad I didn’t get a chance to watch the Magic suck last night.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:14 am
Dwight should be taking notes
you are right, he should be. Well said
October 30th, 2008 at 11:15 am
I will agree, the slow game is BORING. But, if that’s what it takes to win down at the end, it’s all about winning. Detroit turned me off basketball for a while. They were awful to watch. Slowest games ever.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:15 am
Beard you know they were a playoff team who took the champs to game 7 right?
October 30th, 2008 at 11:16 am
I dropped Jameer Nelson and Picked up Shaq. Am I wrong for that?
October 30th, 2008 at 11:17 am
you’re wrong for having either
October 30th, 2008 at 11:17 am
Dude, it’s the first game of the season. Not the playoffs…game 1 of the season. There are 81 left. If this is going to happen every game, I’m going to grab a razor and slit my wrists.
/remember kids…it’s down the road, not across the street.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:17 am
Anyone ever see the MadTV sketch with Aries Spears impression of Shaq hosting a talk show? While he’s interviewing Saddam Hussein, “So you’re telling me. If I make these free throws. You’ll get rid if your weapons of mass destruction?” Then he shoots and completely misses the backboard. Someone please find that clip.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:18 am
those guys are like desparation bye week pickups in football
October 30th, 2008 at 11:18 am
wow…just…wow.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:18 am
so the tie breakers for home court in the playoffs don’t matter
October 30th, 2008 at 11:19 am
@SM – Yes, I was there for all three of the playoff games. Did you watch any of the games in boston? They were a playoff team with 37 wins and are now playing in an improved East. They lost their sixth man and still have Mike Woodson as the coach. I am a fan, but vegas set the o/u at 37.5 and I took the under.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:19 am
Crawford and Granger will compete for scoring title.
Ugh. I hate the whole inside the 3-point line having a different color than the rest of the court.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:22 am
Memphis will be good (decent). I think TBL picked them for worst record, but they are much better than that. With Mark Iavaroni learning from Mike D’Antoni, they have players to run and gun. What saved Houston was their D. The Rockets are already hurt by injuries (Battier and Brooks). They lacked energy after the first quarter. I’m not so sure this game against Dallas tonight is going to go so well.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:22 am
*I was there for all three of the playoff games in Atlanta
And I hope I’m wrong, because those playoff games were a lot of fun.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:27 am
/fixed for accuracy
October 30th, 2008 at 11:30 am
@Triston: I think that was Frank TV skit. I know what you are talking about though. I’m looking for it.
For now, enjoy Great Speeches by George W. Bush.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:31 am
I’m surprised the Rockets/Grizzlies game didn’t get any words. That one had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. When OJ Mayo missed that shot and Scola went up low for that rebound, I started taping it because I knew it’d be a classic.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:35 am
@Rocket. this was before Frank TV. It’s probably at least 5 years old. I’ve never had luck finding it.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:38 am
Ballin’ slightly off-topic: Did you know that Josh Childress played his first Euroleague game last week? He had 14 pts in 26 minutes. I thought people would have been more interested in that given all the talk about it over the summer.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:45 am
DEEEEEEEEEEEEETROIT BASKETBAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLL!
October 30th, 2008 at 11:47 am
That was the first Suns game in a long time that I haven’t looked in the box score and seen 5 DNP’s. Thank God
/Enjoy D’Antoni NY
October 30th, 2008 at 11:48 am
Triston: Yeah, now that I think about it, I think you are right. I can’t find it anyway. I found the ballet of Yao Ming, which causes a few laughs.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:55 am
The Sixers will be given, I figure, about a week to get things figured out before we start complaining in earnest after the World Series hoopla dies down.
October 30th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
Whats is the problem with bad players not getting playing time. If Tarver had spent for some of those picks you would have had less DNPs. No one in NY will complain that Steph and Curry got no minutes. Well maybe not, when the crowd started that ‘we want star’ chant that was awkward.
October 30th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
I know everyone loves to hate Simmons, but the man knows his hoops, here was his take on the Sixers, which is absolutely spot on.
“In a league in which you’re only as good as your best three guys, the 76ers are paying a second banana (Elton Brand) and a third banana (Andre Iguodala) first banana money, and they’re paying a role player (Sam Dalembert) third banana money…they just spent $83 million to reunite the best two guys on a 27-win Clippers team from 2003″
October 30th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
the pacers played better then I thought sans Dunleavy. I could see this team squeeking into the 7-8th spot in the east. TJ Ford was a solid pickup.
October 30th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
The question is how many games will TJ play? Who backs up Ford?
October 30th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Who backs up Ford?
i think its Luke Ridnour. i think they have Tyronn Lue as well.
October 30th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
Ford’s backup is Jarrett Jack.
October 30th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
anyone see drew gooden’s new look? I think he has a squid living on his chin.
http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/the_sporting_blog/entry/view/14108/drew_gooden_opens_08-09_season_with_a_triple-double_…_in_sex_appeal
October 30th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
i think its Luke Ridnour
He plays for the Bucks
October 30th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
Ridnour and Lue play for the Bucks (as does Ramon Sessions). Jack does back up Ford.
October 30th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
Lakers beat the Clips by 30. Baron Davis was great for the Clips in the 1st quarter.
October 30th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Ridnour and Lue play for the Bucks (as does Ramon Sessions). Jack does back up Ford.
my bad. i’m a few years late on that one…
October 30th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
mad tv & arie spears= not funny
October 30th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Thanks for the Chalmers shout out TBL
October 30th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
