Tim Brewster?? You have got to be kidding me. That’s worse than that ass clown that is coaching the Raiders.
November 4th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Gruden? Just because he was a grad assistant there? i dont think so
November 4th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Willingham
/book it
//If not calling racism
November 4th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
this coaching search is going to give me a hernia.
November 4th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
@irish – my thoughts exactly. his name always comes up cause he was a grad assistant for one year and his wife’s from there. he’s got a cushy job; why leave it?
November 4th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
exactly miz. take a bow my friend
November 4th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Butch Davis would be the best choice
November 4th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Butch Davis gets the job. Is there another SEC/elite southern school job that will be open in the next year or two?
November 4th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
thanks, irish. my officemates are giving me funny looks though.
November 4th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Peyton Manning. He will coach both the Colts and the Vols with hand signals, no huddles and a laser rocket arm.
November 4th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
I agree with the Butch Davis pick. People should look at what he did when he took over the U from Dennis Erickson. Erickson lost 31 scholarships spots over the next couple years when DAvis took over. Davis ended up recruiting Ray Lewis, Edge James, Reggie Wayne, Ed Reed, Sean Taylor, S Moss just to name a few stars
butch Davis laid the foundation for the greatest college football team ever. If i were a TENN fan, i would be praying for Davis

Re: Butch Davis
Somebody’s already updated his wiki page to reflect potential Tennessee interest (last sentence of the University of North Carolina section)
November 4th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Butch isn’t a bad call. He might be my 2nd choice… Not sure why, because he should be the obvious one.
However, I’ll go with Brian Kelly at UC. He’s bigger than that program and so is his ego, just ask him. He’s done a fantastic job of winning with Dantonio’s players. He operates in grey areas that most SEC coaches are comfortable and familiar with, so he won’t be a lone wolf.
November 4th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Mack is grooming Muschamp to take over at the real UT.
/crosses fingers
November 4th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
No way Butch leaves UNC right now. He’s just starting to get that program where he wants it.
Unless there is a plan to move Boise St to the Pac 10 in the near future, Chris Peterson would be a solid choice.
Lane Kiffin will be coaching somewhere next season. Book it.
November 4th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
He’s just starting to get that program where he wants it
He got Miami going and left to go to Cleveland
November 4th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Clown, what happened to Major Applewhite? Who took a pay cut to come coach running backs at Texas? Wouldn’t you say he took that job thinking that he would be groomed for the head job?
November 4th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
@ill – Tennessee money and resources/facilities >>>>> UNC money and resources/facilities.
November 4th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
I’m more curious to see who Syracuse hires. In the Big East, the right hire might mean BCS in two years – that’s how awful the conference is.
November 4th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
@cursed – the way the Big East is going, they won’t have a bid in two years.
November 4th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
Major kind of fell by the wayside. He’ll always be a golden boy, but Muschamp will be scary here if he has his own recruits playing.
He wasn’t calling shit at Alabama last year anyway.
November 4th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
@clown – UTennessee (Founded 1794) > UTexas (Founded 1883)
November 4th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
irish – that’s a bad comparison. Almost any college coach has a dream or itch to coach in the pros.
Miz – I agree. But UNC has potential to be a legit college football program. There’s plenty of money and facilities there. But, you’re right. It’s not SEC or Tenn legit. He did play in the SEC and UNC will ALWAYS be a basketball school, so I don’t know…
November 4th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Auburn has a good chance of getting a new coach. Always seems like they are talking about getting rid of Tubs or him moving somewhere else. Not to mention Arkansas, who knows how long Bobby P is looking to stay there.
I’ve said Lane Kiffin to the UT or Clemson job. I’d like him to take the Clemson job because he will have a better chance of being successful there than in the SEC.
November 4th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Keep in mind that, generally speaking, guys from the West stay out west, guys from the South stay in the south, etc.
Kiffin will likely go to Washington.
Grobe is a good pick, but I think the Tenn fans and boosters want a homerun instead of a safe pick. Same deal as here is Nebraska.
Brian Kelly and Butch Davis would both be logical choices.
Don’t forget Clemson has an opening and is a pretty decent job as well.
If Tenn hires Muschamp it would be a bad move.
No Mike Gundy?
November 4th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
@clown – creamsicle orange > burnt orange
November 4th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
@ill- i was responding to your comment that he would not leave after building a program. he worked in the pros before Miami as well
November 4th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Keep your hands away from Mr Cowher, because he should be the coach of the Detroit Lions next year.
November 4th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
@NSR: good call with the regionalism. Plus Kiffin could recruit out west because of the experience with USC.
A local sports talk radio guy here (in Clemson) keeps telling all the Tiger fans that they need a offensive guy (Mike Leach) and not a defensive guy (Will Muschamp) because we are in an age of offense in CFB right now. I think his argument makes sense.
November 4th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Irish – not as a head coach.
November 4th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Auburn is a good call. Arkansas is not an elite job even though it is in the SEC. I was thinking along the lines of LSU/Bama/Auburn/UF/UG/UT and all of those jobs are safe except for probably Auburn and, obviously, UT. I have to believe that UT is still a better job than Clemson. And I agree with others, I don’t see Kiffin going all the way to the east coast/south to coach. UW would be a good job for him.
November 4th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
I’d go 1. Davis and 2. Grobe
November 4th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
how would chris peterson being a scientologist go over in knoxville?
November 4th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
@blazers – not well. consider him out of the question.
November 4th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
Probably better than being black. Damn southern racists…
November 4th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
He is a scientologist? Really? Did not know that. Does he hang out with Tom Cruise or is he a normal scientologist?
November 4th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
I do not disagree with that sentiment
/Mike Davis
November 4th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Tim Brewster (Minnesota): doubt it.
Butch Davis (North Carolina): just to go chapel hill nah.
Jim Grobe (Wake Forest): an old man with a boring (yet effective) offense? just what recruits will he lure there? nah.
Jon Gruden (Tampa Bay Bucs): LOL!
Brian Kelly (Cincinnati): i keep reading he’s a good coach but you’d think he could his team in a bcs if he was that good at a school from ohio.
Lane Kiffen (unemployed): possible.
Mike Leach (Texas Tech): i’m thinking he goes to washington.
Will Muschamp (Texas defensive coordinator): good choice.
Gary Patterson (TCU): good choice but look what happened the last time a tcu coach took an sec job.
Chris Peterson (Boise State): i’d be surprised. i think he either stays at boise or takes a gig out west (when dennis erickson gets bored again and quits next year).
November 4th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
not good but better than, say, auburn or bama or mississippi state.
November 4th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
My opinion: I’m pretty happy with anyone from that list to be honest. I’ve been suffering through such incompetence and poor preparation for years, just about anything is better than what I’m used to. I’d love to have a complete change of style a la Leach or Peterson, I think Kiffin and Butch would both be exciting and great for recruiting, and I think Kelly has the potential to be a huge risk/reward like Pearl was for the basketball team. And all this “Scientologist” bs has nothing to do with anything. Trust me, Tennessee fans just want to win. As long as you aren’t gay or Foreign, you’re cool. Pearl is Jewish, and he’s doing just fine here.
November 4th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Cincy is a private school in a crappy town with crappy facilities that has ZERO football tradition.
What happened? That former TCU coach took Alabama to a 10-2 record and a #11 ranking in the final AP poll.
He’d stay at Tech before going to Washington.
