Are the Dodgers Bidding Against Anyone for Manny?
Baseball November 6th. 2008, 5:45pm
He’s 36. The best right handed hitter in the game right now; one of the greatest ever. He put fannies in the seats at Chavez Ravine, helped the Dodgers to the NL West crown, and to a sweep of the mighty Cubs in the first round of the postseason. Though his past is littered with displays of contemptuous behavior, perhaps he left it in Boston. He’s a bat everyone could use. But who else can possibly match the Dodgers’ initial offer of about 3-years for $75 million? [Update: Looks like the offer was 2-years, $45 million.] At that salary, he’d be second to A-Rod.
Anyone else get the feeling that’s the best he’s going to get? Well, allow us to amend that – the Dodgers shouldn’t offer a penny more, because there isn’t another team in baseball that’s going to top it, but because Manny is a Boras client … maybe Ramriez will get a fourth year. We typed that with gritted teeth.
Of the three biggest spenders in baseball, two (Yankees and Mets) need pitching, and the other is the Red Sox. The NY Post took a peek at the second tier of high rollers: the Tigers are trying to shed payroll, the White Sox and Boras don’t mix, the Angels focus is on Tex, the Rangers already got used by Boras once (A-Rod), the Cubs need pitching, and $25 million a year is probably too rich for Toronto’s blood.
There’s nothing more grotesque than watching a team bidding against itself. Here’s hoping the Dodgers don’t.

Manny is better than Pujols? Good to know.
November 6th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
Whoever signs him will be really disappointed.
Change that to “besides Pujols,” please.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Um, yeah, he’s not better than Pujols.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
the White Sox and Boras don’t mix
You dont mix
November 6th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
Isnt Poohles getting one of his limbs reconstructed?
November 6th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
I agree that they shouldn’t increase their offer if no one is going to top it.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
What if Boras balks at this offer, tests the market to no avail, then crawls back to LA and they lowball him?
November 6th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
I disagree with CRM on principle.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
you really think pujols is a better hitter than manram?
November 6th, 2008 at 6:40 pm
I agree with CRM and NickP.
/brainsplosion!
November 6th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
absolutely Pujols is better. but that are both nice guys.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
Yeah TBL, Pujols is definitely better.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
can i ask what you are basing it on? purely stats? gut?
November 6th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Pujol’s gut is way better than Manny’s gut.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
I’m basing it on the fact that no one in baseball history has had eight straight season to start their career like Pujols has. Look at his number. Granted, his probably not really the age he claims to be, and Manny is certainly in rarified air…but Pujols is on another level.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Yikes, lotta typos in there. At any rate, his WORST season thus far he hit .327, with 32 homers and 103 RBI’s.
November 6th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
Same amount of HRs, but Pujols has higher OBP, BA, and SLG. Plus he actually plays defense well, as opposed to Manny who’s like a lost child in LF. Pujols adds value with his glove, Manny subtracts it.

Has anyone figured out yet why Steve Guttenberg runs sans pants through Central Park every morning?
November 6th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
How is there even any debate that Pujols is better than Manram? It’s friggin’ obvious to everyone who watches baseball. And this isn’t a knock at all on Manny. Pujols is just better. Period.
November 6th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
With the game on the line, there’s no one else in baseball better than Manny. He’s the best hitter.
Anyone who would want Pujols up instead of Manny is a Cardinals fan.
November 6th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
If we’re going by stats alone, I heard A-Rod is really awesome.
November 6th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Is the postseason considered “the clutch?”
.286 .399 .550 – Manny
.323 .429 .593 – Albert
Sticking with Poopholes, personally.
November 6th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
You just like Manny because he has cool hair.
November 6th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
who is the guy always talking about how there is “no such thing as clutch?”
show yourself!
November 6th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
I dunno if I’m “the guy”, but it’s been pretty much proven that there is no thing as clutch
November 6th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
The best hitters in the clutch are the best hitters any other time.
November 6th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
when? by whom? based on what? do you really believe this?
tell that to yankees fans about a-rod in the last few postseasons.
November 6th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
To answer the question posed in the headline, yes. It will be the Yankees. He’d be a perfect DH for that team.
A little birdie told me that the Yanks are going to use their immense surplus to say fuck you to baseball, and sign everyone in sight.
…and to add to the debate, in my 40+ years I’ve never seen a better right-handed hitter than Manny.
November 6th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
that’s a solid opinion, buddy
November 6th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
I really wish I could explain this without A. complicated math and B. using about 8 paragraphs.
November 6th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
Are you drinking already?
November 6th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
the Cubs need pitching,
Yes because the bats in the playoffs were blazing.
November 6th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Come on now, Manny has been in the postseason a lot more than Al B. Sure.
November 6th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
There were 5 Mannys at the Halloween party I attended. No Pujols.

November 6th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
TBL: you really think 3 is bigger than 2?
Hef: Yes…it’s bigger than 2 by 1.
TBL: nice opinion buddy
November 6th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
Baseball Between the Numbers has a chapter dedicated to the lack of evidence to prove “clutchness”. That said, there is evidence that “clutch” can exist in a certain year (A-Rod was money in ‘07, garbage in ‘08) but there is virtually zero correlation on a player’s clutchness year to year.
November 6th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
That’s an artifact of sampling.
Right.
November 6th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
NickP, I agree. I was just saying that in a certain year you could call a player clutch even though it is almost entirely due to luck. I suppose that might be more than slightly hypocritical.
