Graham Harrell (and Texas Tech)
College Football November 9th. 2008, 1:50pm
Well anyone who thought Texas Tech might come out a little foggy following their big win last week was certainly wrong. After stumbling on their opening drive with a fumble, Graham Harrell and company recovered quite nicely, making their case to be feared loud and clear, tearing up Oklahoma State 56-20.
Take away the aforementioned fumble and Harrell pretty much had a flawless evening, as he was 40-of-50 for 456 yards and six touchdowns. Damn.
The victory of course sets up an epic game in Norman two weeks from now that couldn’t come any sooner (sooner, get it?). I’m sure all the experts will be calling for their fun to end that weekend, but there’s something different about this Texas Tech team. I’m not sure exactly what it is, but Harrell has a special air about him. Big stage or small, he seems to always play with unabashed confidence and poise, and I have yet to see him throw a pass that wasn’t to the perfect spot when he absolutely needed to.
If you happened to catch him and Michael Crabtree with Lisa Salters after the game, you may have noticed how both of them came across so comfortable and relaxed, almost as if they’re not surprised by any of this. They weren’t overexcited or huffing into the microphone. Sure, they were happy, but they spoke like they’ve been through it before.
It was interesting, I’ll be shocked if they don’t go into Oklahoma and bring their best game.
Worth nothing that fellow Heisman hopefuls Colt McCoy and Tebow both had big days yesterday as well:
McCoy: 26-of-37 for 300 yards and five TDs (he did throw two picks though)
Tebow: Ran for three TDs and threw for two in the first half of that rout
A lot will certainly hinge of what Harrell does at Oklahoma, but right now he’s gotta be at the top of your list.
In case you’re wondering what happens if Oklahoma beats Texas Tech and there’s a three-way tie in the Big XII, Kirk Herbstreit was kind enough last night to weave through the confusion and clear it up for us when he said, “I don’t know what happens if that happens.”

Three-way tiebreak of the Big XII South is decided by BCS standing.
The Horns are screwed. The only way I could see them going to the MNC game is if Tech wins out the regular season and loses the Big XII title game, but we know that ain’t happening.

I still believe Oklahoma is the best team in the country with USC right there with them. I am still not sold on the Red Raiders as the Huskers should have beat them if not for an overtime interception by Joe Ganz. If their offense can be tamed by Nebraska, then the Sooners could shut them down.

If they didn’t have the word “Tech” after their name, they’d be #1 right now. Hell, Texas leapfrogged everyone when they beat Oklahoma. Why didn’t Texas Tech leapfrog everyone when they beat Texas? Is it because voters see the names “Alabama” and “Texas Tech” and they just assume Alabama’s better because they’re Alabama (and I’m an unapologetic SEC partisan).
BTW, I was listening to ESPN Radio on the way home, and Mel Kiper and Beano Cook were back on the “USC’s the best team in the country” bullshit. They’ll just never let it rest, will they? They lay low for a few weeks, and now they’re back because they put 69 on a Wazzu team that Cal put up 66 on. If USC uses media idiots like Kiper and Cook to con their way back into the top 2 ahead of the SEC and Big 12 champions (not to mention an unbeaten Utah team that beat the team they lost to), then I will give up on college football. I mean, the media’s 1-5 since 2003 with the “USC’s clearly the best team” argument. Now they’re trying it twice in one year.

By the way, we’re almost at the end of the season, and 3 of the top 5 teams now play in the same division of the same conference. That is so unbelievably impressive. As an SEC guy, I’ll give the Big 12 team the nod right now, especially with Tennessee and Auburn circling the drain and Vanderbilt being exactly who we thought they were.

TWO safetys on Aaron Rodgers! The Vikings are definitely getting their money’s worth from Jared Allen.

Are they fucking serious? They won 17-3 last night, at home.

I can tell you what happens if tech loses.

penn state only dropped to seven in the ap poll? ridiculous. they should be well out of the top ten

Oh please moleman, Iowa has a good squad and Greene is legit.

No way they drop behind Ohio State. And they did beat the shit out of Oregon State–the same Oregon State team that beat the team that is “clearly the best in the country.”
Sports Hernia, the ESPN Radio USC claims came last night early on during the USC game, not after. But I’m sure it didn’t stop

they shouldnt be ahead of utah. usc and osu had much bigger drops after their first loses.
guess it doesnt matter, theyll probably be out of the top ten in the bcs standings.

thats true
November 9th, 2008 at 2:41 pm

November 9th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
I’m with you on one thing though mole, Utah should be ahead of them.

I’m rooting for more than half the BCS bids to go to the following teams:
Oregon State
Michigan State
Utah
Boise State
Cincinnati
It could really happen

I forgot to add Virginia
November 9th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Sorry about 3 in a row. But if Virginia gets one more win, nine ACC teams are bowl eligible? That could be 2 more than the SEC unless Vandy wins one more and Auburn gets lucky.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
virginia needs to win out and miami to lose twice to even have a shot at the acc title game right?
November 9th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
I think so, but I’m not sure on the tie breakers.
