The Onion Bag: Arsenal Beat Man U, Madrid Goes Gago, Ronaldinho’s Wicked Strike
Soccer November 10th. 2008, 1:45pm
This is Abigail Clancy. Â She allows Peter Crouch into her bed. Â She also didn’t understand the black dress-camera flash conundrum. Â Now read my soccer posts and click on the ads.
Arsenal 2 - Manchester United 1: Arsenal beat Man U in a super clash with titannic title implications and all that jazz. Pundits will pump the Gunners’ reformation, but, in reality, they just had better luck. Arsenal’s back four remains shambolic. Almunia still acts the clown. With a late lead, they were as composed as a virgin on prom night. Would the real Cesc Fabregas please stand up and report to Arsenal’s training ground?
Back in Black…and Red: Contrary to the prevalent wisdom, Ronaldinho has resuscitated his career at AC Milan. The inflamed Brazilian has scored four goals in eight appearances in Serie A, and he also hit the injury-time screamer, as shown in the video, against Braga in the UEFA Cup. He doesn’t move with the facility of old, but he’s shown enough, apparently, to rejoin the national team.
Four for Gago: Twenty-year old Franco-Argentine striker Gonzalo “Gago†Higuain netted four goals for Real Madrid in a barn-burner that saw them escape 4-3 at home against pesky Malaga. The match had three penalties, eight yellow-cards, and a straight red for Sergio Ramos, who left Madrid down to ten in the first half. Though nervier than it should have been, Madrid will take the win, having lost three of their previous five.
A New Stadium for Chelsea? Roman Abramovich may dig into his battleship fund to finance a new $783 million 75,000-seat stadium with a retractable roof for Chelsea near London’s Battersea Power Station. If approved, the move may incite a quarrel. Chelsea have played at Stamford Bridge since 1905. The new stadium, in a different borough of London, is more than an hour walk from the old. The club’s naming rights are also owned by a nonprofit group, which may force Chelsea to change their name. Chelsea have denied the rumors.
Come on Guys It’s November! The MLS playoffs are occurring right now, which, judging from the ratings, most of you did not know. The Chicago Fire eliminated New England 3-0 on aggregate and will face Columbus in the Eastern Conference Finals on the Deuce Thursday Night. The New York Red Bulls, who somehow migrated to the Western Conference during the playoffs, knocked off the defending champion Dynamo and will face Real Salt Lake on Saturday in the Western Conference Finals.

About time you got the memo about what we like around here…
November 10th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
Also, that Man Utd result sucked. But they do have a game in hand on Arsenal, so that two point deficit in the standings isn’t that bad.
November 10th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
She definitely should not have worn a bra with that dress. We need nipples here.
November 10th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
the chick got me to click. keep it up.
as howard stern once famously said, “people like to look at pretty girls, what can i say?”
November 10th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
I see London, I see France…
November 10th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
man that goalie was awful. how fast do the balls come at you, 5-10 MPH?
November 10th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
unfortunately arsenal arent in first place. and while games in hand are nice, at this point in the season and especially with the chunk of march missing for qualifiers, it means fixture pileup first and foremost which ’sir’ fuckface has been bitching about (and rightfully so) lately
November 10th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
@moleman: yeah, Arsenal aren’t in first place, but I’m always happiest when they are below Man Utd in the standings. If United aren’t in first place, I at least want them above Arsenal.
November 10th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Just going off the top of my head, I’d say 40+ mph. They go much faster than a person can run, which is what? 20-25 mph?
November 10th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
goals are 24 x 8 feet. placing it in the top corner like that if the keeper is anywhere but standing at the post is unsaveable
November 10th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Here you go irish, we weren’t even close.

leopard-print knickers…not too shabby.
November 10th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
though there is a pretty good chance that keeper sucks ass
im not shocked hes doing well in italy considering thats where his loss of speed would matter the least, so good for him. if that team the way it is now is in the champions league next year though they will get bounced in the group stages.
November 10th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
I think I have those panties she’s wearing!!
November 10th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
St. Bear: that link is hilarious. I don’t think i believe anyone’s kicking a soccer ball over 100 mph. Or that Beckham reguarily kicks em in the 90s.
November 10th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
It didn’t say regularly, it said measured once. But even if you take, say 30% away from that number, it’s still a lot higher than what I would have guessed.
November 10th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
Sportsgal, it’s ok, we all know you don’t wear panties.
November 10th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
some people say this is the fastest one ever somewhere around 130
the speeds are figured out by taking the distance and time, its not like theres someone with a radar gun.
November 10th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
@Sportsgal
Do you have that mask she is wearing too?
November 10th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
you’re right. i would believe 60-70 and not 90-100.
November 10th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
We need the Mythbusters
November 10th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
the english FA has the english record set at 114mph
November 10th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
@sportsgal - what did you have to do to get them from her?
/storytime!
November 10th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Maybe she took mine, Miz!
November 10th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Arsenal need to start stepping up to the middle-of-the-pack teams. Losing at Fulham and against Stoke aren’t the sign of a champion.
Ty, how could you mention Gago’s 4 goals and forget the four goals in ONE HALF by Samuel Eto’o. Think Pep Guardiola is glad that Eto’o didn’t end up in Kazhakstan?
November 10th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
damn!! frisky today!
November 10th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
Duffy’s into chicks?
November 10th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
So, Top 5 Soccer Wags:
1. Cheryl Tweedy Cole
2. Keeley Hazell
3. Alex Curran
4. Abigail Clancy
5. Victoria Beckham
November 10th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
BFFredo, no Gemma Atkinson?
November 10th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
1. That Ronaldinho goal was unsaveable. There is no way that any human was catching up to that.
2. Man U are more likely to stay in the title race than Arsenal. I think Liverpool will fall off. Barring significant upgrades for Arsenal in January, I think 1. Chelsea 2. Man U 3. Liverpool 4. Arsenal is the most realistic Premier League finish at this point.
3. If I mentioned every time Barcelona bitch-slapped a team 6-0, I would be talking about it every week.
November 10th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Victoria Beckham looks like a malnourished alien sustained by silicone, a surgeon’s knife and botox.
November 10th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
i want to argue with you on that i really really do
alas, i cant
November 10th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
BFFredo, no Gemma Atkinson?
Sorry. Put her in for Beckham. I was trying to think of a 5th and my brain blanked.
And I hate to agree with ty, but he’s right. Arsenal need to spend in January to reinforce that team. A physical central defender. A starting winger. Another striker (just in case Van Persie decides to go act a fool again).
But I’m starting to think that maybe (just maybe) this is the year for Liverpool.
November 10th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
who could they get though?
senna is too old to make a big money offer for
de la red may never play soccer again
flamini would be perfect …. OOPS
November 10th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
moleman, if we’re talking DMs, I’d go with:
1. Daniele De Rossi
2. Miguel Veloso
3. Gokhan Inler
Any one of those 3 could walk into the starting line-up next to Fabregas. Thing is, I don’t think Wenger wants to line anyone that’d step in front of guys like Diaby and Denilson and Song.
November 10th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
It will definitely be difficult, as they will probably focus on the Champions League and will need someone who isn’t cup tied.
I think Blaise Matuidi from St. Etienne is probably the best bet. He’s been a favorite of Arsenal scouts and there’s talk of a £10m bid for him in January. He’s young, French and fits Arsenal’s setup.
I don’t think Wenger will do it. But, he could also probably pick up Scott Parker on the cheap of West Ham start selling like crazy. He’s not up to the Arsenal standard in terms of skill, but they could use the depth and someone who can tackle.
November 10th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
De Rossi is too expensive. Inler rejected a move to Arsenal in the Summer. All three would be cup-tied in Europe.
November 10th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
roma would be retarded to sell de rossi (though they were retarded enough to buy riise) and anyways arsenal cant afford him or veloso. inler was the name over the summer so i wouldnt be shocked.
st.e. are in a shit storm so a sell off could make sense for them
November 10th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
well there you go, couldnt remember why that rumor never materialized
im telling you man, plessis for 30 million. he shut down arsenals midfield, is black young and french, pull the trigger!
seriously though if villa keep losing, wouldnt be shocked to see a move for barry
November 10th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
De Rossi is too expensive. Inler rejected a move to Arsenal in the Summer. All three would be cup-tied in Europe.
Just throwing names out there. To be fair, I really don’t expect Wenger to buy a midfielder in January. Hell, he might stick to his stubborn ways and not buy a single player.
Matuidi would be a nice fit.
November 10th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
I also think the midfielder is far more crucial than the defender. A healthy back four of Clichy, Gallas, Toure and Sagna is the most mobile in the Premier League. There are advantages to that, which reflect in Arsenal’s stalwart defensive record in open play. A proper defensive midfielder would breakup attacks and protect that back line.
The only problem is set pieces. I wonder how much of it could be solved by basic concentration and tactics.
November 10th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
The problem for me is that such a back 4 gets outmuscled by physical sides — particularly in set pieces (like Rory Delap’s throw-ins or corners).
As for midfielder, I wanted us to keep Flamini, but he was bent on moving to Italy. My problem, as I said, is that I don’t think Arsene wants to buy someone who’d take time away from the other kids he’s got developing.
November 10th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Also on the Matuidi front, St. Etienne just hired Damien Comolli, late of Spurs, who spent seven years as a scout for Arsene Wenger.
November 10th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
mascherano just named argentina captain, good for him. especially since he said he wasnt the right person for it, which of course means hes the perfect person for it. when gerrard gives up the armband in two years its going to the little chief no doubt
November 11th, 2008 at 10:06 am
I don’t believe Higuain’s nickname is “Gago.” I think you’re confusing him with Fernando Gago, another Argentine player for Madrid.
