The Yankees’ Astronomical Offer to Sabathia
Baseball November 17th. 2008, 3:30pm
Poor small market teams.
“It sounds like they’re overbidding,” Melvin said. “If the speculation is true that we’ve offered CC $100 million, why would you offer $140 million? Why wouldn’t you offer $110 million?”
“(The Yankees) have been pretty adamant about bidding on everybody. That doesn’t mean that’s what the market is. That’s just one team’s offer. Until all the bids are on the table, I don’t know what the market is.”
We’re still not entirely sure why baseball fans aren’t more up in arms about this, and despite the two World Series banners for the Marlins in the last decade, and the memorable run by the Rays, it’ll never make sense to us. It’s weird – as we’ve said previously, we’re fiscally to the right of Attila the Hun when it comes to politics. But in sports, we like our leagues socialist in nature – everyone on the same playing field.

I’m more surprised at how long it has taken him to accept.

where was everyone bitching about barry zito’s contract when it was given? nowhere thats where, because it wasnt the yankees redsox or mets
November 17th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
As a Dodger fan I was ecstatic about that signing.

That is what makes baseball great. There are actually different ways to go about running a franchise. The Yankees way worked for a while and now they are stubbornly sticking to their guns. And if it doesn’t work out then we can all sit back and laugh at the Yankees like we laugh at the Giants for signing Zito to that huge deal.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
And that contract has effectively handcuffed the Giants for several years now. The difference is that the Yanks, Red Sox, and Mets can make that type of mistake and just throw more money at it (Pavano, Giambi). When a smaller market team makes that type of mistake or has an injury to a star player, it kills their season. The Yankees simply go out and acquire a Pudge Rodriguez and Xavier Nady to overcome injuries.

all that money for a player who performs greatly in the regular season only to self destruct in the playoffs…should fit right in with arod

I’d like to see more players doing this “wear a hat of another team in the same sport” thing. It could really start some rage with the right guys doing it.

I’m a Red Sox fan, and I am rooting for this to happen. In fact, I hope they sign Burnett and Lowe as well.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Man fuck this can you believe McNabb didn’t know there were ties in the NFL. Holy fucking shit I mean oh my god. That’s so fucking crazy man Im about to lose my shit. WOW. What.the.fuck. Hes so dumb man why is even a quarterback. I mean this shit just blew my fucking mind man. I cant believe it I seriously cant believe this shit. Jeez.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
I was gonna say, how has he not accepted this offer yet, I mean he already has a hat?
November 17th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
No shit, really?
November 17th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
who doesn’t see the comedy in paying a 325 pound pitcher to labor through 95 degree heat and humidty in Yankee Stadium $25 million a year?
Personally, I hope they pay Sabathia that money over 8 years since big fat contracts for seemingly fit pitchers worked out so well.

It’s quite literally a massive toss-up, he’s either going to be the black David Wells or the black el Guapo.
November 17th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Because it hasn’t been hot in Cleveland or Milwaukee the last two seasons?

Nick, I thought you knew that NY is first in everything.

As a Yankee fan I love the idea of getting CC, but it has to stop there. I get the feeling all their finances are based on revenue streams which are quickly going to prove unsustainable. The corporate money for seats at the new stadium isn’t going to be there in year two like it is in year one.
Burnett and/or Lowe would be a disaster.
November 17th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
exactly.
not a fan of AJ but wouldn’t mind them going after Lowe. A rotation of Wang, Sabathia, Chamberlain, Lowe, and Pettite/Hughes should be half way decent.

It’s going to be hard to get a ticket for Funk Master Flex night, i mean for the new stadium for the next 5 years. No matter how this economy goes. I’m already saving up, hoping to get a 7 game package like I had for this last season.

i think the bitching was drown out by the laughter
November 17th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
AWESOME line. im just pissed i can’t get funk master flex night over the internet. that sucks ass. Funk Flex, for my money, is the greatest music DJ ever. in music history. he’s real and raw and just so damn hilarious.
November 17th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
so let me get this straight … you’re NOT a mcnabb guy?
November 17th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
Waaa! the Brewers can’t sign C.C. That is what happens when you trade stud prospects to rent a player. If they Yankees had stud prospects, they could have rented C.C. There is a give and take to everything.
November 17th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
TBL, I think this is in response to everyone overreacting in the McNabb thread.
November 17th, 2008 at 6:10 pm
SG is correct. She gets me.

Grandmaster Flash would like to have a word with you.
November 17th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
No one touches Funk Flex in the DJ department right now. Clue tries to talk trash, but Flex knocked his bitch ass down.
“Hard to get a ticket to…Funkmaster Flex night…”
Love that David Letterman opening…
