Hunkering Down for UNC-Kentucky
College Basketball November 18th. 2008, 6:00pm
We’ve got our rec-league basketball playoff game tonight, and we’ll speed home so that we can bury ourselves on the sofa for a look at No. 1 North Carolina. Baby Blue, Kentucky blue, and Dick Vitale. What more could a hoops fan ask for? If nothing else, it’ll be a tuneup for UNC prior to their Maui trip next week.
Necessary for Kentucky to keep this thing within 20: a monster game from Patrick Patterson against the Hansbrough-less frontline; much better defense against the three than it displayed against VMI (made 14); and another heroic 39-point performance from Jodie Meeks.
Also a helluva game, although not on TV: Stephen Curry and Davidson against Blake Griffin and Oklahoma. [Update: It wasn't listed as on TV here earlier, but now it's on ESPN2. Nice! Better: We kicked the No. 1 seed's ass in hoops tonight. An awesome victory. Drinks on us!]

My tv guide has Davidson vs OK at 9:30. ESPN 2.
November 18th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
What the hell are you talking about…Davidson is on ESPN2.
November 18th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
msuspartan is right. Hoping to catch the last half of each of these games. In the meantime, I’ll be at Allen Field house watching KU hang their banner.
November 18th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
TBL – Make sure to keep stats!
Triston – Have fun. I’m sitting this one out.
If TBL’s guide is like the KC Star, he probably saw NIT West Regional Final. I’m interested in OU/Davidson. I am not 100% sold that OU is the team that will fill the void KU vacated at the top of the Big 12. Also, maybe Curry’s mom will be in the stands.
November 18th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
OU/Davidson should be a damn good one. I’ll check in on that one while watching The Shield. Only two episodes left! Really looking for to Thursday to see how the Salukis look against Duke at the Garden. Should be a good test for their freshmen class. What, no one cares about the Missouri Valley?
November 18th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
What, no one cares about the Missouri Valley? bsanders
I do!
November 18th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
KC Resident
- Good to hear. Hopefully we’ll get back to two bids this year.
November 18th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
I hope that the 2 bids includes my cousin’s team…
November 18th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
Jay V
- Who’s that? Creighton?
November 18th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Bsanders -
MVC ball has always held my interest. I wouldn’t say I have a passion for it like the Big 12, but I love me some WSU and hate Bradley. Respect programs like SIU and Creighton.
Jay V. – Who does your cousin play for?
November 18th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
i’m pretty sure someone would find time in their t.v. schedule to televise a 20 vs. 14 matchup…hence why ESPN2 picked it up and all the ESPN execs can jerkoff to UNC/Tucky on ESPN
November 18th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
I think we’d all agree that Eric Devendorf needs to show a little more emotion, like..between dribbles.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
KC Res
- Yeah, Bradley is pretty easy to hate. They always seem to hire the biggest a-holes as coaches. I grew up 10 minutes from Illinois State and both my parents went there so I’ve been going to MVC games since I was six. Went to Kevin Stallings’ (and Bobby Knight’s, though he wasn’t ever really there) b-ball camp when I was little. The MVC has come a long way and SIU and Creighton have both put together great programs. When those two play it doesn’t have the wattage of UNC/Duke or anything, but the teams and the fans hate each other just as much. Great atmosphere to be in.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
KC & BSanders…not plays for, but coaches. My cousin is the head coach at an MVC school.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
In fact, KC…you are obv very familiar with him.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
When those two play it doesn’t have the wattage of UNC/Duke or anything, but the teams and the fans hate each other just as much.
Good to hear.
Well, going to be a good night. Ku v Florida Gulf Coast Something and Davidson v OU. Might even check in on UNC v Kentucky to see how in over his head a certain coach is.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
Jay V
- Is Greg Marshall your cousin?
November 18th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
Lord, I really hope his cousin doesn’t coach for Bradley. That’d be a bit uncomfortable for me as I just bashed Bradley.
My superficial Bradley hate stems from:
1. The school name is Bradley. They need to change it to Brad. Anyone that walks around with the name Bradley is obviously insufferable, vapid, vain, and most likely, a trust fund kid.
2. KU has some unfortunate history with them.
Taking a wild guess based on your 7:49 comment, is your cousin Turgeon?
November 18th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
Uh oh, I know what your 7:49 comment meant. Your cousin is Jim Les. You win this time, Jay V. You win this time.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
I was hoping it wasn’t Jim Les, KC, since I said that Bradley hires a-hole coaches. I was referring to Molinari when I said that. That guy was such a whiner on the sidelines during ISU-Bradley games in the mid-90’s. Probably didn’t help that the ISU fans gave him hell because he played in central IL during college.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Man I can’t wait for this UNC game. It’s been a long time waiting since that beatdown I last saw.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Jonny Flynn is beastly, just dropped 26-5-5 on a decent Richmond team and scored 19 in the second half to save SU from an embarrasing loss.
This Cuse team can score with anyone, but I don’t think they play enough defense to be relevant for a sweet 16.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
WTF? 90210 is done till’ jan 6th?
November 18th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
wilson – i havent seen the last 4 eps. will catch up online.
3 mins in and i can see why Stephenson transferred from unc to USC. deon thompson looks great early.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
other than the center – who has very little offensive game, i saw nothing inside. the guards could be like a dickerson-simon-bibby type trio, though.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
i will be shocked if thompson keeps it up. he only averaged 8 a game last year starting, dont see him improving much as a junior
November 18th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
It didn’t finish strong tbl. I’d tell you to not waste your time, but I’ve read that you have to finish watching what you start.
Stephenson was a defensive stud though. They will miss his long body.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Mole, he was just a piece to the puzzle last year. His role will be increased with him and Zeller in there together.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Man I love college basketball. It’ll be time for a new gravatar for me soon…
November 18th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
blowout city … at this rate, Vitale will be talking about duke and paulus and coach K with 15 mins left in the second half.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Anyone who wants to play PG give Gillespie a call. You’re probably better than Michael Porter.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Editorial fix:
I mean a new gravatar after MU beats T Tech in the big 12 championship with there home game at Arrowhead.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
if carolina wants to run a three big man setup thats fine by me and the rest of the acc
November 18th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
This is gonna get ugly, if it isn’t already. Bring on OU/Davidson!
November 18th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
can i just take a moment to say how happy i am that UK basketball has gone the way of michigan these days?
November 18th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Mole, it isn’t going to matter for the rest of the acc. Seriously. NOT GONNA MATTER. This is just getting the freshman acclimated.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
really looking forward to roys march collapse with as cocky as the unc fans are sounding this year
November 18th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Wow! Sick.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Somebody, anybody, stop the bleeding!
November 18th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
oh i agree thompson is no stud – but with TH out, and 2 freshman up front, Thompson should be getting 10-12 shots a game.
im def switching over to the the OKL-Steph Curry game later. this shit is 25-6, it’s over. i saw Curry’s freshman bro play today on ESPN … nice little player.
oh, and we smoked the No. 1 seed in the tourney. we had a new player who had just graduated college and he was a great athlete. maybe like 6-2, great hops, blocked like 5 shots, great handle. we are begging him to come back next week. this kid really was great. they had to double him so i was open and hit a few triples. won by like 20. awesome.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
oh yeah well im basing him not keeping it up on the fact that i would think captain white supremacy is coming back pretty soon
November 18th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Mole I agree with you. I am so happy to see Kentucky go down the shitter. Really does make me happy.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
gonzaga up 17-0 6 mins in
lol
oh, raftery has the call of BC-St Johns on ESPN 2
2 mins left …
November 18th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
people are all over duke for having two down years but where are all the people asking what happened to kentucky? they havent been relevant in years
November 18th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
A 6-2 guy blocked five shots? How tall are the guys you’re playing with?
November 18th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Added bonus to Kentucky going down the shitter, my alma matter gets a top flight coach.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
thanks for alex goligoski btw
November 18th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
He put one in against my hometown team?
November 18th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Would they fucking show Erin Andrews when she talks godammit. I don’t actually care what she’s talking about, I just wanna see her look fantastic.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
no just a general thankyou for his performance for wbs last season and the pens thus far this year
November 18th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
No one made a big deal when UCLA was down during the Lavin years either. The difference is people enjoy it when Duke is down. You can help by go, “Alright! Those cocksuckers got bounced in the second round of the tournament!”
November 18th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
well yeah i realize that, i mean in the media. guess theres some of that there too.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
It’s nice to see Wachovia is making good use of the bailout money.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
TBL -
You guys brought in a ringer?
November 18th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
mole – word. He was fun to watch play when he was here.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
How can you tell Blake Griffin’s going to be a top-5 pick? He’s wearing an iPod during warmups.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
Sherron Collins is a freaking beast this year. Too bad he is playing with everyone else being completely inexperienced.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Damn. 250 lbs of nuts on his chin.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
ok Curry, let’s see what you’ve got …
November 18th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
KC – well we have 3 good players. our fourth guy has been rotating randoms. they always suck. wso our best player made sure to find someone good … and this guy was really good.
i’d say he’s one of the top 3-4 players of anyone i’ve seen in the league this season.
davidson 7-2 … theyre ALL over Curry, and leaving other guys open
November 18th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
Curry looks pretty smooth running the point early here.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
i dont think curry has taken a shot, and we’re about to hit the under 16 timeout …
these griffin kids are huge. how big are the parents?
November 18th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
and of course goligoski gets stoned in the shootout. pens lose.
why therrien insists on sykora in the shootout is baffling when staal has been on fire and is one of the better puckhandlers on the team
November 18th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
curry’s so money
love to watch this kid
willie warren – dammit. i wanted him bad in my fantasy draft but he was gone early. kid has sick range
November 18th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Fuck, Chris Bosh ripped my fantasy team a new one tonight.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
boog sciambi with the call on espn2. sweet
November 18th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
I went to school with Duke’s Brian Zoubek, his parents were big. I mean his dad was about 6′5″, but his mom was like 6′2″. Thus, he’s 7′1″.
Thus, I imagin the Griffins’ parents are giants as well.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
TBL -
Their dad is big. If you watch that game, I’m sure they’ll show the parents. Last year in Big 12 play, they were shown several times a game a la Curry’s mom in the tourney last year or the way Lucas’ dad was always shown his senior year at OkieSt.
Collins is a fucking stud. I’ll say it again. Goodness. I was afraid he was going to get fat and regress this year.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
did zoubeks parents suck at basketball too?
November 18th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Mole -
Damn. That is hardcore.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
curry got to 17 awfully quick, huh?
November 18th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
duke hasnt had a decent big man since williams. boateng bailed and was presumably crap. zoubek cant stay healthy and when he is isnt much of anything. if one of the plumlee brothers doesnt pan out im going to be pissed.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Will Muschamp = Texas’ head coach in waiting. Fuck yeah. http://www.dailytexanonline.com/sports/muschcamp_to_be_head_coach_after_brown_s_retirement
November 18th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
Well played, mole. Everybody around here is pretty disappointed about how he’s done at Duke, especially since he was actually a nice kid who wasn’t remotely arrogant, which is rare since my town consists of half arrogant dicks.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
love how scrappy davidson is.
oh yeah, there are griffin’s parents. HUGE. the dad looks like a LB. nice to see an interracial couple!
November 18th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
who knows maybe he turns it around. unlikely i think but we shall see.
i mean hes no shavlik randolph as far as disappointing goes, especially considering he came in with mcroberts the king of the letdown
November 18th, 2008 at 10:15 pm
wait he was a year after wasnt he. whatever.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
nice to see an interracial couple! TBL
Obamanation!!!!
/totally joking
November 18th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
Hopefully he gets it together. Who knows. And the thought of Shavlik Randolph legit made me laugh. Nothing made me happier as a Terp fan than to see him make an appearance. Whatta douche.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
really impressed by davison to only be down 4 on the road. i didnt think they’d be able to keep this within 10. esp with curry missing like 5 mins with foul trouble.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
You must have seen Jackson because Onuaku is a force inside. Almost unstoppable if he gets in deep. He had 17 tonight. If Rautins can get his shot figured out Flynn/Devendorf/ Rautins/ Harris/ Onuaku is going to be nearly unstoppable on the offense end, but that group couldn’t outrebound my rec team.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
Why the fuck can’t ESPN afford to have HD cameras at two games at the same time? Fucking annoying.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
Willie Warren is nice
November 18th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Just came back from Campus Pub watching that UK-UNC game, and I’m fucking loaded. “Who won?” haha
November 18th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
blake griffin absolutely taking over. beast
November 18th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Shatner is that name of the actual bar?
November 18th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
onuaku is a beast … but limited offensively. no depth at all.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:07 pm
My jaw dropped after watching the Shield tonight.. this is how a show needs to go out, not like the lame end to the Wire.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
And Flynn is insane, he’s getting to the basket like Mike Conley did at OSU.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Here comes Davidson!
14-0 run!
November 18th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
wow, bucket and stolen in bounds pass and a curry 3 cuts it to 7!
November 18th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
Not to mention the Refs are calling ticky tack fouls on Oklahoma and Griffin is getting hammered with no calls.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
cursed
- completely disagree about the Wire. I thought the finale was one of the best ever done. I really dug tonight’s ep of The Shield, though. It’s still nothing compared to The Wire.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
20 and 16 for Griffin and still 9 minutes left..
November 18th, 2008 at 11:20 pm
Bsanders, gotta disagree. While the Wire was an excellent show, I still feel a bit overrated. It did have some of the best acting EVER for a tv show, and great character development. But the Shield’s writing is something else. I thought the Wire was a little too plodding (and i’m extremely happy I watched it marathon fashion – I can’t imagine just watching one episode at a time in which very little episodic advancement from show to show.
Like the Wire, but the Shield is my all time favorite right now.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Cursed
- Well, we agree to disagree. I’m a huge fan of The Shield, and it has some of the best dialogue on TV. I’m psyched to see how things go next week. Vic is one twisted bastard, one of the great fictional characters of our time, right up there with McNulty and Omar. It sucks all the great shows are leaving. The Wire, The Shield, soon Battlestar Galactica, though I’m still holding out hope for another season of Friday Night Lights.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
davidson players are dropping like flies, doubt they have another run in them down 14 with 6 to play
November 18th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Indiana Hoosiers: 2-0
Oh yeah!
November 18th, 2008 at 11:27 pm
Totally agree about the characters. McNutty and Dicksucker were pretty sweet.
Oh and TBL will appreciate this, what LeBron is doing is ridiculous. But did you see what the King said tonight before the game?
November 18th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
By the way..interesting article on Massilon’s facilities, and how they trump what the Bengals have
November 18th, 2008 at 11:29 pm
Davidson can’t make a run with Curry being the PG..his role players aren’t good enough to help him out. He has 34 and the rest of the team has 28.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:29 pm
And I’m getting caught up on Opie and Anthony.. looks like another war is forthcoming with Howie (interesting now that they work for the same company..wouldn’t be suprised if they planned this out).
November 18th, 2008 at 11:34 pm
curry has 39, this is a ridiculous effort. why no box and 1?
November 18th, 2008 at 11:35 pm
25-20 for griffin, my an absolute monster. id like to see TH try to contain him
November 18th, 2008 at 11:35 pm
TBL, i’m not a big fan of the Box and 1.. you can kill that defense with screens and dribble hand offs, and you can get bunnies like crazy against it.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:36 pm
I have Oklahoma -5
this is going to get hairy
November 18th, 2008 at 11:37 pm
just took Arizona -5.5 for the late game..Don’t see UAB keeping up on the West Coast.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:38 pm
davidson cuts it to 6!
November 18th, 2008 at 11:38 pm
damn you, RS. i took uAB +5.5
cant stay up for it, though. long day tmrw
November 18th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
Where’s Gus Johnson when we need him?!
November 18th, 2008 at 11:40 pm
CURRY HITS AN INSANE 3!!! he has 42!!!
oklahoma lead down to 3 with 53 seconds left
November 18th, 2008 at 11:40 pm
Curry. Wow.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:41 pm
that was in blake griffin’s eye!
nice shot of durant and westbrook in the front row laughing.
is curry really 16-43? has he taken 43 shots? is that right?
November 18th, 2008 at 11:41 pm
This is ridiculous..looked like money in the bank a half hour ago..DAMMIT Curry!
TBL- Only took Arizona going off an early season vibe. I have no facts to back up that pick.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:42 pm
Ok. Ou wins this, but what is with the continued jacking of threes? Run the clock. Work it. Dumb.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:43 pm
I went in the shower with OU up 14, came out with Curry drilling the nuts three in Griffin’s face. Kid is ridiculous.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:43 pm
Can Fran Frischilla be any more in Davidson’s jock? Every Oklahoma foul is desrved every one by Davidson is qiestionable and he just said Davidson hasn’t played that well…
Ass.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:43 pm
how do you defend curry? i can’t believe the show he’s putting on.
he has 44 and is the only reason this one’s close.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Curry is 12-29, 6-16 from 3, 13-13 from the line
November 18th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
NOOOOOOOOOOOO
November 18th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Curry=fraudulication.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
okl at -5 … oh my gosh! the buzzer went off, bucket wont count!
omg, that blows
November 18th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
basket didn’t count…DAMMIT!
November 18th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
The dunk doesn’t count and OU doesn’t cover. Sorry RS.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
rs – that’s a shitty tease. guy misses the FT for the push, and then the dunk for the cover. damn.
curry is not to be messed with, that much is clear.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:46 pm
Steph Curry is the next Steph Curry?
November 18th, 2008 at 11:46 pm
I’m going to pretend that didn’t happen..There goes the perfect day..Had Richmond +16, UNC- 16.5 and Gonzaga -26. Oh Well.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:47 pm
Classy Griffin, classy.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:47 pm
how do you defend curry? i can’t believe the show he’s putting on.
he has 44 and is the only reason this one’s close.
Don’t let him get the ball. Impossible.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:48 pm
Refs could have called a foul too on the last play and swallowed the whistle. Dicks.
Gambling rules.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
Cavs will win it all this year.
That is all
November 18th, 2008 at 11:57 pm
POA from the cheap seats!
November 19th, 2008 at 12:04 am
davidson better pray to god they beat state because like i said theyre not winning the socon
