The Only Reason Your Sofa Beats Maui: The Witty Banter of Jay Bilas and Bill Raftery
College Basketball, Media Gossip/Musings November 25th. 2008, 9:00am
One of the things that Tony Kornheiser has talked about during his transition from PTI to Monday Night Football is chemistry in the booth (or lack thereof). And for about 20 minutes yesterday, we got to thinking – does any announcing tandem have better chemistry than Jay Bilas and Bill Raftery? The two were calling games in Maui yesterday (with Sean McDonough as the play-by-play guy), and even a stinker like Texas and St. Joe’s was made joyous by the back-and-forth between the two.
Whether it was Bilas criticizing the game of Damion James (who definitely was forcing the action; even Texas fans admit as much), or Raftery offering up like a non-sequitor like “a turkey block!” or his signature “send it in!” the two kept up the witty banter throughout an awful first half of basketball.
(Strange but cool: Though we were on the treadmill while watching and listening to the game, there was a moment where AJ Abrams of Texas had made a few shots in a row, and the words “on fire” appeared in a graphic. There were flames, it seemed, above his statline. Is this new? Very video-gameish, very cool.)
Even though we’ve got a hoops playoff game of our own tonight, we’re so into this announcing pair that we’re going to TiVO the Texas-Notre Dame game and watch it Wednesday (while blogging, of course). Another reason to set the TiVO for tonight – a Charlie Brown Christmas at 8 tonight.
The remainder of the night in college hoops:
- Syracuse beat No. 18 Florida, 89-83, proving that preseason hoops polls are worthless. Florida has one player – Nick Calathes – and a bunch of role players, none of whom are very good. Luckily, the SEC is down this year. The Cuse have a ton of talent, mostly of the guard variety. They’re going to need a second big to step forward if they’ve got Final Four hopes (and the defense is indifferent, at best). And Paul Harris, despite his strange ability to rebound effectively at 6-foot-6, does not qualify.
- We’ll try to limit our Connecticut raving to a minimum, but the Huskies slaughtered Wisconsin, 76-57. They’ll be at full strength when SF Stanley Robinson returns in January.
- Steph Curry had 39 points in a win, and only took 21 shots to do it. He’s averaging 35 points per game.
- Kansas drilled Washington 73-59. The Huskies are painful to watch because Romar doesn’t seem to run an offense. They just have guys attack the hoop and throw up junk (29 percent shooting), and hope it falls or pray Brockman (18 rebounds) secures a board and put-back. Freshman Isiah Thomas (17 points) needs to act like a point guard and create, not just jack up shots. We were impressed by Kansas center Cole Aldrich, who had 16-9-6, and passed well out of the double teams. It is just way too early to tell how good or bad the Jayhawks will be because there are so many new kids out there who don’t know what they’re doing.
- Obama’s brother-in-law is struggling at Oregon State. The Beavers lost at home to Yale, 53-52. OSU’s best player missed two foul shots with four seconds left with his team down a point. OSU is 0-3.
- Jacksonville State 75, UMass 74. Unacceptable at home.
- So much for an Alabama resurgence. The Tide got run out of Maui by Oregon, 92-69.

The Stanley Robinson story is a good one in a program that needs a good story every once in a while. Robinson was forced to leave the program and the school due to bad grades, stemming from flying home to Alabama to spend time with his girlfriend and 2(!) kids. Well, instead of taking transfer offers from Auburn or Alabama, Robinson decided to take a full time job in Willimantic, CT, take some online classes and some classes at a Community College and is going to pay his was back to Storrs and walk on to the team in January. Good to see a kid take responsibility for his actions and do the right thing. It’s much better than stealing laptops.

It’s going to be nice, come March, when Doug Gottlieb can no longer make fun of the Orange’s (I still hate typing that) early-season schedule. Florida down, KU tonight, Virgina Friday, Memphis in a couple of weeks.

For whatever reason the Badger game wasn’t on TV here but it seemed like they held in there for a decent length of time…still think they’ll be pretty good by the end of the season (still working on replacing Butch and Flowers but they should be alright)

I’m still trying to figure out how to get a sit down next to Raftery at an Irish pub with Guiness in hand until they kick us out.

@Wally’s World — If someone is incapable of enjoying Raftery and Bilas then I would argue they need to watch all televised sports on mute, because no one can make them happy.
CBS should have given Packer’s gig to one of Raftery and Bilas. Although I understand if their motivation was to push one of the guys (Kellogg) they own completely.

@sportsdork… So correct. I think CBS went away from Raft because he is not as good as he was 10 years ago. He’s slipping a bit, but still a great listen every night. Kellogg is not a bad choice either.
As for Syracuse… They play more good non-conference teams this year than they have in the last 8 years… at least it seems that way.

Both Raftery and Bilas are the perfect combination of Vitale and Packer (the former loved basketball but can’t break down X’s and O’s to save his life and the latter knew the game inside and out but hated all those who play and coach it)

Butters, the Wisconsin game was on our local FSN here, although I’m sure that’s a regional thing

Cuse definitely looked good last night. 2-3 zone got picked apart a bit though, too many easy dunks for Florida. Thought Cuse played better D in man to man.

Wasn’t Shulman in Kansas City?

McDonough is in Maui. Yes, Shulman’s here in KC with Vitale.

Best two quotes from last night’s Alabama/Oregon blowout
(Graphic showing that the last pair of brothers to play for Alabama was in 1932)
Bilas- Which one did you guard?
Raftery- Ike was a little too quick for me.
Raftey- Didn’t Ronald get recuited for football?
Mcdonough- Yes! it looks like you are picking things up
Raftery- And it’s not the bill after you leave the restaraunt!

Onuaku is an absolutely beast inside but is only listed at 6′ 9″ and is playing the 5. That definitely would be their weak point on Defense is their size in size. Almost every time a Florida guard drove to the hoop last night, Onuaku would help on D and no one else was down low to stop an easy dunk. Think they would prolly be better off playing more man to man D and switch to the 2-3 zone once in awhile to change momentum.

[...] Indiana, North Carolina, Texas, Notre Dame, Oregon, St. Joseph’s. Who’s calling it: The best play-by-play combo in the business: McDonough, Bilas and Raftery. The skinny: It’s North Carolina’s tournament to take, [...]

Bill Raftery is, hands down, my favorite analyst in any sport. The Eye should pair him with that schlub Nantz, if for no other reason than to inject a little personality into the broadcasts.
