Charlie Weis: Enjoy the Rumors For a Week
College Football December 1st. 2008, 11:00am
And now, we wait. (Here’s our thoughts from the weekend, and before you dismiss Urban Meyer, two things to remember: The UF president that hired Meyer was previously at Utah with Meyer; UF offered and Meyer had accepted before Notre Dame even came calling four years ago.)
- For Notre Dame athletic department to defend its coach.
- To see if the buyout is closer to $20 million.
- For the Sun Bowl (Texas Bowl?) reps to decide if they want the ugly Irish offense to pollute their bowl game.
- For Irish recruits to decommit.
- For Urban Meyer to say he has no interest in the ND job … should it become vacant.
- To track any private plane that Cincinnati’s Brian Kelly may be boarding.

FAT.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:03 am
Nice pantsuit.
I hope he stays.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:07 am
FART.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:08 am
The guy is a magician.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:10 am
For these low level bowl games, ND would be a God send. Just think of all the hype it would bring.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:13 am
LOL not sure which is more humorous, the fact the irish are looking at a sun bowl bid or the phrase: “debating at going ugly Irish offense to pollute their bowl game.”
December 1st, 2008 at 11:13 am
Just think of all the hype it would bring.
Hot Dog vendors would go crazy.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:16 am
He definately needs the ASSMAN license plates.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:16 am
if they still recruited in one of their worst seasons ever when weis was getting epic amounts of shit, do you really think its him that is making up the recruits’ minds or the program? i dont see him getting fired having any negative impact in recruiting, frankly i only see it helping
December 1st, 2008 at 11:17 am
NOBODY believed that Urban Meyer story at the time, TBL, and nobody believes it now.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:18 am
Its like I’ve seen all these posts before…
December 1st, 2008 at 11:19 am
They’re welcome to Crennel in a couple weeks, (hell now please).
December 1st, 2008 at 11:21 am
i believe it.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:21 am
what do you mean? nobody believed Meyer saying in his book that his dream job is NotrE dame?
December 1st, 2008 at 11:23 am
Meyer also had a clause in his contract while at Utah that specifically said if ND ever came calling, he could leave.
He loves ND, he’ll coach there at some point in his career.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:24 am
Taking ND out of the equation, shouldn’t we be hoping Weis succeeds? Here’s a guy who, devoid of any athletic ability or apparently social skills, made it big in football. This is like a blogger’s dream, minus the three-way with ScarJo and some anime chick.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:25 am
Urban Meyer would be an idiot to take the ND job. It’s not that he wouldn’t be the best fit for the program, or that taking the job and winning a title or two there wouldn’t cement him as one of the two or three best coaches of the last 25 years.
But if you think Florida won’t try to match ND cent-for-cent (or booster-for-booster) on that contract, or that ND has endemic advantages that trump UF’s new school pedigree and recruiting inroads, you’re maybe unaware that it’s not 1986.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:26 am
The big lead: Bringing you all the Charlie Weis and Brett Favre news you can stomach!
December 1st, 2008 at 11:28 am
The better question: IS there another candidate behind Meyer? No one’s as sexy a name, and it defies logic for me to think that the school’s going to stick with a smart hire (Brian Kelly, maybe, or an attempt to lure someone like Jeff Jagodzinski) given their recent history.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:32 am
you said Charlie Weis and stomach. that’s funny.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:34 am
this is like comparing a guy who got rich during the tech boom to someone who’s been a blue-blood elite since the civil war. ND has coffers that few (michigan, harvard, yale) can match.
and as rich as florida, texas, USC and ohio state have proven to be the last few years, compared to ND, they’re ‘new money.’
December 1st, 2008 at 11:35 am
/fixed
December 1st, 2008 at 11:35 am
but you’re underestimating the man’s love for the school. he coached there for five years. he’s a devout catholic. it is his “dream job.”
if, as you said, meyer is one of the 3 best coaches in the last 25 years … wouldn’t the best, smart athletes want to play for him?
December 1st, 2008 at 11:35 am
It seems like yesterday that Weis was taking that black guy’s recruits to a BCS bowl. Sad fall, really.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:38 am
It’s amazing how poor an offensive coach Weis can be without knowing which plays the defense is calling or without Brady running the show.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:40 am
Legend.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:41 am
watch him make this plate of food disappear?
December 1st, 2008 at 11:44 am
If you’re a good, smart athlete, you’d probably rather go to Stanford (better school), Vandy (hotter chicks) or one of the Ivies.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:45 am
I would take Charlie back as an OC once McDaniels flees… would Belichick ask him back?
December 1st, 2008 at 11:45 am
perhaps if he wore his pants under his belly button he would become a better coach
December 1st, 2008 at 11:49 am
Or FSU.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:50 am
“dream job.€
That was a good show on ESPN.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:51 am
Good, smart athletes that Urban Meyer wants won’t get into ND unless there’s a sea change in who they admit. He’s running an SEC program and getting everyone he wants here (I know someone who’s close to the academic side of the athletics programs, and he’s told war stories about Meyer begging for people with triple digit SAT scores, among other things), and that would not necessarily transition to ND.
It’s worth noting that he’s also pretty well ensconced in Gainesville with young kids, and that DOES factor in when there are wives involved.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:52 am
If/when Weis goes to a recruit’s house, does that boy’s family lose $3000 in food expenses alone to keep Weis happy?
December 1st, 2008 at 11:55 am
Bradford needs surgery still likely to play will he be 100%.
December 1st, 2008 at 11:57 am
LSU – Notre Dame part 2!!! which team QB’s suck more? Was Bo Pelini the Tigers head coach last year? Is Weis’ ego/ fatfullness >,<,= his bloated ND contract? all these questions and more will be answered at the “what the fuck happened to our teams?” Bowl!
December 1st, 2008 at 11:59 am
Sylvester Croom seems like a perfect fit for Notre Dame if Weiss is shown the door.
December 1st, 2008 at 12:02 pm
I don’t doubt that Meyer will be tempted by ND…but if your “dream job” was available would you not at least hold off and wait until ND talked to you? Meyer knew then and he knows now that winning at Florida is easier than ND due to the academic requirements. Unless ND is planning on offering $6+ mil/year, Florida can…and will…match it.
December 1st, 2008 at 12:02 pm
i always hear about how notre dame gets overrated
since 2002 do you know how many times they have started out the season ranked in the top 25? twice. two times. id like to see ohio state get into bcs bowls when they have to actually work their way up the polls
December 1st, 2008 at 12:04 pm
me too moleman
December 1st, 2008 at 12:11 pm
shh…i like the easy road.
December 1st, 2008 at 12:14 pm
Fat jokes are great and all, but Weis was on his deathbed after a botched gastric bypass surgery, wasn’t he?
December 1st, 2008 at 12:19 pm
had to laugh at the “another ND post?”
this is the only team in Coll football with its own network. unscientifically, i’d say ND has the widest fanbase in the country.
December 1st, 2008 at 12:20 pm
usc has espn
December 1st, 2008 at 12:23 pm
unscientifically, i’d say ND has the widest fanbase in the country.
Gayest fanbase. Get it right.
December 1st, 2008 at 12:23 pm
correct cracker jack. Can’t fault the man for trying.
Maybe more treadmill and less stomach shrinking would work better though.
December 1st, 2008 at 12:24 pm
he lost almost a hundred pounds after the surgery though, he actually is slimmer than he was at his fattest.
when you weigh almost four hundred pounds your exercise options are a bit limited, you can barely walk at a sustained pace let alone jog without your knees exploding.
December 1st, 2008 at 12:25 pm
he’d get it right if he said Michigan.
December 1st, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Browns suck!
December 1st, 2008 at 12:31 pm
Yes they do!
December 1st, 2008 at 12:32 pm
urban meyer and ND mystique or Vandy? I’d guess that connections at ND go farther than Vandy. Maybe Stanford, too. location hurts stanford – never will be a school getting more ink than UCLA/USC.
are the ivies giving athletic scholarships yet?
December 1st, 2008 at 12:46 pm
Re: Meyer
You’d be a fool not to believe the story. He may not end up there, but it’s ridiculous not to think that the idea… especially with the loaded roster and easy schedule for the forseeable future… is realistic for Urbie and his finger points to come to ND. I always thought he would first bail from FL to test out the NFL and then return to ND… But perhaps now is the time. There is more to this than rumor.
No one is choosing Vandy over ND… absurd. Stamford, perhaps… but that’s because Harbaugh and his dui’s make for a pretty good coaching team.
December 1st, 2008 at 12:49 pm
Tar Baby – Thank you. I love how people are dismissing Meyer to ND as crazy. Whether or not Meyer wins with UF this year, he already has a title, and now is a great time to jump in as ND coach (if you’re into buy low, sell high).
meyer simply WINS a bowl game and he’s an instant hero.
December 1st, 2008 at 12:51 pm
i may be in the minority here but if notre dame gets a bowl invite i think they should decline it
December 1st, 2008 at 1:05 pm
no you are right they should but they/any other football team would never do it
December 1st, 2008 at 1:23 pm
and hes not black right Tar Baby?
December 1st, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Holy crap it’s Tar Baby. Quick, everyone say stuff to his face!
December 1st, 2008 at 1:26 pm
I’m all with you TBL. There is no other franchise, possible exception being the Yankees, that compares to Notre Dame football. Nothing, end of story. You have the Notre Dame Broadcasting Network showing all their games. But there is nothing more attractive than the history of the school. Personally went to the Husker game in Notre Dame a few years back, and even though it looked like a Husker home game, I got shivers thinking of the history. The Husker players didn’t talk about the win after the game, they could only speak speak about the campus, the tradition, what an honor it was to play a game in South Bend, the former players who were there. Nada word about the game itself.

There is no press conference scheduled at ND today… and no pressers anticipated to be scheduled in the near future… If Kelly was signed.. he would have been delivered today… I would consider this to be chasing the low hanging fruit.. and despite the fact that Kelly may be a hell of a coach… ND cannot afford to take such a chance.
I have a feeling (and knowledge) that ND is not settling this time.. or at least without a fight… And the longer that we go without news… I believe the better… Nd is at least attempting to get someone big… I assume that we will hear static over the ND radio waves at least this week… I would hope that they could do it until the BCS games are over with to prevent the Les Miles situation where everyone in contention has to issue a statement reaffirming their devotion to their employing school… but I dont know if that is feasible… And if bringing in the big fish causes ND to cut a check for $9 mil a year… There should be no hesitation in doing it.
Additionally.. Tampa Bo… I would hope that whoever takes over would keep Corwin Brown/Tenuta on Defense… Corwin was a good pick by Weis.. And is also black.
December 1st, 2008 at 1:38 pm
This isn’t the Tar Baby I know.
December 1st, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Must not be liquored up yet
December 1st, 2008 at 5:49 pm
Urban Meyer isn’t going anywhere.
December 1st, 2008 at 5:51 pm
Any bowl game would love to have the Irish fan base travel to their site and spend money.
December 1st, 2008 at 6:54 pm
So do those who think Meyer is going to ND think he’s going to ditch the Gators before the title game or do you think ND is going to wait until after the game and only have Meyer able to recruit for a month?
