The Onion Bag: Chelsea Get Robbed and Ronaldo is Red-Faced
Soccer December 1st. 2008, 1:00pm
Robin Van Persie and his lovely wife Bouchra.
Chelsea 1 - Arsenal 2: Once the hardest away tie in the Premier League, Scolari’s Stamford Bridge is just another venue. Chelsea dominated toothlessly, unable to threaten despite their physicality, with Didier Drogba listening to his iPod in the stands. Â Robin Van Persie scored two goals (one legitimate) in three minutes, showing why Arsenal tolerate his petulance. Captain Fabregas has returned Arsenal to the title race, or at least to respectability.
Manchester Derby: Wayne Rooney scored his 100th goal, which was all United needed for a 1-0 victory. The Portuguese Man-O-Sex earned a red card for mocking the referee and for raising two hands to protect his coif. The only way he could have seen red in a more Ronaldo fashion, would have been bookings for shorn legs and hot pants. Dimitar Berbatov should score more than two goals in eleven appearances, to justify United’s £30.75 million expenditure. Pouting and casual ambling are not intangibles.
Real Trouble: A shorthanded Real Madrid lost 3-1 away to Getafe in a quasi-Madrid derby, dropping them to third in the table, six points behind leaders Barcelona, who excelled in a characteristic 3-0 thumping of Sevilla. I’m not witty enough to write for a news outlet, so I won’t torment you with an endless stream of puns terming this a “Real Crisis†or point out to you how their defending was “Really†awful. “A lot of things happened in the match and at no time did we have the feeling we could win†will probably be among Bernt Schuster’s final words.
Inter Extend Lead: Sulley Muntari setup a goal and scored another, spurring Inter Milan toward an adequate 2-1 win over Napoli, tinged with the numbing Mourinho flourish. It was enough to extend their lead to six points, as AC Milan suffered a senior moment — possibly forgetting their little blue pills — during an impotent 3-1 defeat away to Palermo. The score sounds a lot better than it looked, thanks to a late penalty from Ronaldinho. Juve moved into second on goal difference with a 4-0 win over Reggina.
The Punctual Brad Friedel: American goalkeeper Brad Friedel broke the Premier League record for consecutive appearances, 167, during Aston Villa’s 0-0 draw with Fulham. The 37-year-old has played for Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers, Galatasaray and the Columbus Crew of MLS and has appeared 82 times for the U.S. National Team. Not to disparage Friedel’s accomplishment, but there is, perhaps, no award that can quite encapsulate the mediocrity of American soccer quite like Perfect Attendance.
Goal of the Weekend: Leo Messi vs. Sevilla

the more real players go down the more likely they are able to pry tevez away. berbatov and rooney are not even close to tevez’ level yet he rots on the bench. for all the great moves ferguson has made, freezing tevez out is going to be up there with selling stam

Well put, Spence.

Well said, moleman. Whilst I disagree that he is more talented than Rooney or Berba, he is at their level, and I have yet to be convinced that all 4 could not play int he side at the one time - Berba up top, Wayne tucked in behind, and Ronaldo and Tevez on the flanks. Put Carrick in the middle to hold the works together, and explain to me which side, exactly, is going to be able to keep up?
I disagree with the criticism of Berbatov though; he is the focal point of attack, around which all the whirling red dervishes flourish. His touch may be the finest I have since since Eric le Roi, and he can truly pick a pass. United, last year, were like Roma with Totti - total football. Wonderful stuff - but not a long-term strategy. And, despite seeming somewhat paradoxical, a little one-dimensional. Now they can play total football, or go conventional with an out-and-out striker.

watched 2nd half of inter then 1st half of chelsea-arsenal. the difference in pace of play was astounding.

Damn, five comments in and not one “soccer isn’t a real sport” or “America will never love soccer” dopey rant? I’m pleasantly surprised.

every single one of the top four

also, prediction …. in january, liverpool will move babel to spain (the henry comparison is going to come true, struggle as a winger then sell him to someone who uses him in his natural position) and use the funds to buy both owen and heskey back
December 1st, 2008 at 2:04 pm
prediction upon moleman’s prediction - if pool do that, say goodbye to any thought of contention. it would be quintessential liverpool to make such transfers - trying to get something out of players who are clearly nothings.
needless to say, i would be almost as delighted to see owen and heskey return as i would for them to sell babel, who is real quality, and whose manager does not rate him or use him properly, inexplicably so.
December 1st, 2008 at 2:06 pm
emile heskey is not clearly a nothing, he is one of the best target men in the game and when partnered with an out and out striker would make a formidable attack. and i seriously doubt that the combined cost of the two would be five million pounds.
and when owen is healthy (i know i know) he is one of the best goalscorers around. either way, it would serve as reinforcements and nothing else.
December 1st, 2008 at 2:10 pm
and we cant all be quintisential united and spend thirty million pounds on owen fucking hargreaves. sometimes you have to roll the dice on a pennant or bellamy. … *bang*
December 1st, 2008 at 2:13 pm
who would you play heskey with? not torres - they are too similar from the perspective of their approach to the game. not kuyt - they are too similar from the perspective of their skill levels. heskey needs to play with a transcendant number 10. the best pairing would be keane and heskey, but do you play that pair to the exclusionof torres? not in any big matches. so, you get heskey for the stoke and bolton games? doesnt kuyt already fit the bill for those level of matches?
i just dont see it.
and owen will never be fit. he won’t. his hammies are shot, and they were the lifeblood of his game. if newcastle eff cee can get a pile of pylons for him, they should snatch that offer up.
December 1st, 2008 at 2:15 pm
which is why i point out the reinforcement thing. i have a feeling torres will play no more than ten games for liverpool between now and may.
December 1st, 2008 at 2:28 pm
Hargreaves was only 18M. Which is ridiculous when you consider Carrick was 16.5M or so.
And I still think pool would be better off relying on the current complement of strikers, and spending on fullbacks, and maybe a proper right-winger if Rafa isn’t even going to give Babel a go out there, proper position or no.
If Torres only plays 10 games between now and May, pool are done, heskey or no heskey.
December 1st, 2008 at 2:32 pm
dont know why i was thinking it was thirty. eh either way he cost as much as the best holding midfielder in the world so its still ridiculous.
i want them to spend on fullbacks too but given rafa’s track record theyre better off just not spending the money. aurelio cant defend at all, cant stay healthy, but can cross nicely. dossena is an abortion on wheels and cant believe how poorly he has adapted, just another sign that serie a is vastly overrated. arbeloa is fine and i can deal with him, especially as he has great chemistry with kuyt. degen will never play a game for pool.
kuyt has won the right wing spot, hes not the traditional wide player but has been fantastic the past two months. even though today i believe he will be deployed up top and yossi will be on the right.
they dont really need much. a left back, if insua isnt ready to take on the crown or they dont want to move darby over, and some backup in the striker spot.
December 1st, 2008 at 2:47 pm
ah you’re right - forgot kuyt has been deployed on the wing this year. and yes, he has done wonderful work out there. ever since rafa played him there in the champions league, he has really took the bit between his teeth eh.
dossena is starting against west ham though eh? disaster alert.
December 1st, 2008 at 2:51 pm
yeah, because … SHOCKING. … fabio hurt his calf again. though insua is on the bench and i would imagine he will be the first sub on.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Why wouldn’t Rafa try Insua from the start? a) surely, can’t be WORSE than Dossena? and, (b) you are at home, against a *struggling* west ham side - what better conditions to blood a youngster? If Lord Ferg can play Rafael at City in the derby at 18 years of age, surely Insua can cut his teeth in front of the Kop?
December 1st, 2008 at 3:10 pm
because he spent a lot of money on dossena and feels he has to give him enough rope to hang himself with is my bet. or thats what rick parry is making him do.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:13 pm
That’s too bad if that’s the reason, and it probably is. Gotta cut your losses man. Pool have a great opportunity today, can’t afford to let it slip up because of pride or reticence.
Of course, I’m hoping they do … but that’s besides the point. This isn’t smart management.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:19 pm
if they manage to lose to west ham at home the issue runs deeper than the left back
December 1st, 2008 at 5:38 pm
hey look another shit performance at home by rafas attacking players!
im putting money on united to win
December 1st, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Why was Liverpool in such a hurry to be rid of Steve Finnan?
December 1st, 2008 at 11:22 pm
he couldnt stay healthy and his knee injuries really hurt his pace. arbeloa is better than finnan is at this point. finnan of three years ago though, man those were the good times.
