Pete Carroll’s Annual Dance with the NFL
1-liner, College Football December 2nd. 2008, 12:30pmPete Carroll: As is the case every year, he’ll have options to leave USC, where his total package pays him north of $4 million annually. Among the potential teams that could pursue the one-time NFL failure: Seattle, San Fran, Oakland, San Diego, Dallas. You know who is praying Carroll takes an NFL job? Everyone ever associated with the UCLA program. (LA Times)

he’d be stupid to leave
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:41 pm
yes he would.
You think dallas would be interested? Isn’t Garret being groomed right now?
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:42 pm
Seattle already had Jim Mora, Jr. locked up to replaced Holmgren.
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:42 pm
Agreed. He has a perinially top rated program in a town full of good lookin women. Throw in free beer and he’s hit the trifecta.
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Hes not leaving.
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:43 pm
lets get this rumor started ….. carroll to notre dame
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Neither is Urban Myer.
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:44 pm
Of the teams listed, I would say San Diego is the only possibility. Seattle is locked in with Mora, San Fran will certainly give Singletary at least another year, Oakland is not a possiblity (hello Lane Kiffin?), and Dallas has Garrett locked in to replace Phillips.
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:45 pm
I think he might be interested in the SD job if AJ Smith has a brain.
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:45 pm
what Quizz said.
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:46 pm
if AJ smith is there, carroll is not. the only thing getting him outta USC is full personnel control and the accompanying $8+ million contract that goes with it.
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:47 pm
my sources tell me carroll is going to notre dame
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:51 pm
If he goes to SD Will Farrell will make Anchorman cameos at practice.
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:52 pm
I’m not sure anyone deserves that and the HC job anywhere. I think it has pretty much failed everywhere. Off the top of my head: Holmgren in Seattle, Mike Sherman in Green Bay, Andy Reid in Philly, and I want to say Carrol had complete control in New England. I could be wrong about all this though.
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:54 pm
why would carroll go to ND? does he have ties there?
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:54 pm
Well, Mora might yet go to U. Washington and Singletary is anything but guaranteed a full year in SF.
Still, Carroll ain’t going anywhere.
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:55 pm
the entire pac 10.
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:56 pm
TBL-I don’t think moleman is serious but you are really in love with this ND drama aren’t you.
December 2nd, 2008 at 12:59 pm
bill belichick…he’s the only one. and don’t give me any of this scott pioli bullshit, it’s belichick’s show and pioli’s just living in it.
shanahan has complete control in denver too. moderately successful, but if he knew how to judge talent or hired someone who did, he’d be insanely mroe successful. denver’s talent blows outside of cutler, marshall, royal and a few others, but shanahan’s awesome scheme makes them play better than they’re talent. he needs a GM with control so he can focus on coaching.
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:00 pm
Mike, I would say there is close to zero possibility of Mora ending up at UW (at least next year). A chance, but an incredibly small chance.
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:01 pm
I’ll go out on a limb and say he believes in Jesus. Close enough?
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:03 pm
*facepalm*
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:04 pm
first, i agree – carroll isn’t going anywhere. but the LAT devoted a huge space to it, and it’s a story every year, thus the link. plus, usc’s good. and i wanted to mention he was a failure in the NFL.
ND? i simply don’t see how they’re NOT a story. is there a team with a bigger national fan base than ND? are they not one of the best teams in the history of college football? have they not been struggling? do they not have their own network? i have to laugh everytime i see an ‘ugh, ND’ post.
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:06 pm
wasn’t his career record close to .500? that’s not really a failure. rich kotite, art shell 2.0…now THAT’S failure.
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:07 pm
also, norv turner
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:13 pm
I see more buckeye fans than ND fans.
maybe, Link?
/You’d

Ive never seen this ND network but I have seen some games on NBC, ABC and ESPN.
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:16 pm

December 2nd, 2008 at 1:20 pm

Yea this is what I wanted to see. Suck it Trabeck! TBL I need more Michigan love. are they not one of the best teams in the history of college football? have they not been struggling? do they not have their own network?
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:30 pm

December 2nd, 2008 at 1:30 pm

December 2nd, 2008 at 1:30 pm
michigan sucks
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:35 pm
the SEC sucks
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:35 pm
talk about no particular order!!
@cursed:2nd column is wins. 1st is yrs of the program, so Michigan has
40 more wins than ND, but it took them 9 years to get them
sorry the headings didn’t copy over. here’s the link…

I’d love to see some of the media guides for other teams on the list up there. I’ve studied Tennessee’s
tooextensively and found some funny games/wins in the early 1900’s such as the Tennessee School for the Deaf and Memphis Medical College.December 2nd, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Fair enough TBL, but then under your rationale.. no matter what they do is a story, and I’m not sure that’s the case. They’ve been downright mediocre since OSU pounded them in the Fiesta Bowl, does mediocrity deserve a story every day? Their ratings are way, way down, btw. I don’t even think they get the top ratings at this point anymore.
So yes, I agree, the Weis stuff is storyline – anytime one of the traditional powerhouses have a potential coaching change, that’s legitimate. But, at this point you’re just regurgitating the same storyline.
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:36 pm
I’m not sure that total program wins should clearly indicate a “best team in college football” since not everyone has been playing football the same amount of time.
I agree. Why cover a team that sucks. I’m a Texas A&M fan, but I never expect a post on A&M because they suck.
I think TBL is referring to the fact that every ND game is on NBC. And no, no other school has that nation wide channel.
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:38 pm
gig em, aggies.
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Ok.. I’m an idiot. Can someone give me the categories for that?
?, wins, losses, ties, win%, games?
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:39 pm
@cursed:2nd column is wins. 1st is yrs of the program, so Michigan has

Ohio State fans are stupid.
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Oh hell yes!
Oof.
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:41 pm
I think TBL is referring to the fact that every ND game is on NBC. And no, no other school has that nation wide channel.
Kind of misleading in a way. Teams like Texas, OSU, USC, Boise State could ink a deal with say, Versus or other networks and it would be profitable for those networks. However, their conference affiliation would not allow it.
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Miz – We’ve played one more game than you!
/burn
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Notre Dame has the most National Championships in the Modern Era of College Football(1936- present) w/ 8
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:43 pm
I have nothing to say to you.
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Rockets…come on, ATM is my buckeye backup plan.
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Notre Dame hasn’t been the same since [insert 80's white guy with funny hair here] left.

December 2nd, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Lou Holtz was dirty. Im sure Ricky Waters was a great student.
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:47 pm
True. But the SEC has a deal with CBS. ABC/ESPN will air any conferences games. But if those schools/conferences go to a cable/dish channel, they won’t get the coverage ND/SEC gets because they are on a national network as opposed to Verses, which about 1/8th of the country sees. I think the Pac-10 has a deal with Fox Sports, but I’ve never been able to watch the Pac-10 games.
But your point about ND being a Independent team is very valid.
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Stevie Wonder’s charts are more organized!
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:50 pm
You know the problem we are having right now? I can’t tell if you are screwing with me right now or not. I’m pretty sure you are though, and that’s fine. They suck.
I have a bad football year. This is why I like basketball infinitely more than football.
Duke/Rockets>>>>>>>>A&M/Raiders
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Rockets…nope, not screwin around. my roommate had a ton of friends at A&M and i visited there a handful of times and i was sold when i saw kyle field for the first time.
December 2nd, 2008 at 1:53 pm
In terms of this story, ND rates much higher w/ guys “my age”, as it was THE SCHOOL in the 70’s and 80’s on TV. Remember there wasn’t an ESPN or conference TV contract, so you couldn’t wait to see Nebraska/Oklahoma on Thanksgiving weekend, the ND/USC battles, Michigan/Ohio State, or Alabama/Auburn, because those were the only main games on back then. You didn’t get about 10 games every Saturday like you do now.
Other than those games, nobody really cared about college football, except for their own school. With all the exposure and parity, things have changed incredibly
December 2nd, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Yeah, for 15 years. Maybe at this point it’s not that they’re struggling, it’s just that they’re a 7 win program that will have a good year every once in a while.
December 2nd, 2008 at 2:13 pm
/so people understand that jpq is old
December 2nd, 2008 at 2:16 pm

December 2nd, 2008 at 2:25 pm
What the fuck’s wrong with having an AARP card?
December 2nd, 2008 at 2:31 pm

December 2nd, 2008 at 2:57 pm
jpq I can remember when it was legal to bring a keg into War Memorial as long as you had a ticket for it. Ahhhhh, the gold old days.
December 2nd, 2008 at 2:58 pm
good, not gold
December 2nd, 2008 at 3:03 pm
I miss those days, although at Purdue (Indiana) not quite so open-minded. I almost got arrested my first day on campus trying to get beer. Told me I was out of new York State (18 drinking age then) pretty quickly
December 2nd, 2008 at 3:15 pm
penn state?
