Good column, though, asking what ND is as opposed to what it wants to be: “Just look at yourself, Notre Dame, and see if you like what you see: a smallish (8,300 undergrads), private, history-laden (founded in 1842), Catholic institution in a Midwestern town with academic standards (almost three-quarters of incoming freshmen are in the top 5 percent of their high school class) just shy of Stanford and Yale.”
