Report: Charlie Weis to Return to Notre Dame, Announcement Set for Wednesday
College Football December 2nd. 2008, 7:07pm
According to Irish Eyes (UPDATE: And a TV station in South Bend) Notre Dame is bringing back Charlie Weis next season, and the announcement will come “most likely within the next 24 hours.” Nothing in the Chicago papers of this moment (7 pm).
We’re not familiar with Irish Eyes, so we’ll just put out some theories: Weis was getting calls from recruits who were worried about his status, and Weis told the school they needed to step up and make an announcement; perhaps Irish Eyes is just assuming that Brian Kelly has decided to stay at Cincinnati because he knows ND isn’t getting rid of Weis. Just theories.
Weis Will Return (Scout)

Well, it’s on the ESPN crawler, so I imagine it’s true. Or else they’ll look really fucking stupid.
December 2nd, 2008 at 7:12 pm
Newton’s third law of motion is coming to mind and I’m not sure why.
December 2nd, 2008 at 7:14 pm
If this is a scoop for Scout that’s pretty good.
December 2nd, 2008 at 7:24 pm
My guess is Urban said no, and what other candidate would they possibly want after him, other than the “change for the sake of change” guy?
December 2nd, 2008 at 7:28 pm
Mcclinton ejected in the Miami-OSU game! Oh man OSU has a shot now. He was 4-4 from 3 to start the game.
December 2nd, 2008 at 7:29 pm
whyd he get ejected?
just switched over from jeopardy
December 2nd, 2008 at 7:31 pm
He swiped at an ohio state player’s face and grazed his face ,but it wasn”t a punch, more of a slap. Weak call in my opinion.
December 2nd, 2008 at 7:31 pm
still waiting for the replay
December 2nd, 2008 at 7:32 pm
still, as the best player on the team, you can’t do dumb shit like that.
December 2nd, 2008 at 7:33 pm
yeah it was dumb. Got a little upset that the OSU player was crowding him. Funny part is they let the play go and he buried a 3.
December 2nd, 2008 at 7:33 pm
it was the right call. dude intentionally went for OSU players face. so what if he missed?
December 2nd, 2008 at 7:34 pm
It’s not going to matter since OSU can’t throw the ball in the ocean.
December 2nd, 2008 at 7:50 pm
or rebound
December 2nd, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Best news all day… More Charlie Cheeseburger jokes for at least another year…
Ohio State is young…

I’ll start us off: The folks from the South Bend Wendy’s are heading to the bank first thing tomorrow morning. Credit crises be damned, they are now a lock for loan approval.

December 2nd, 2008 at 8:32 pm
+1 theTed… Well struck!
December 2nd, 2008 at 8:34 pm
I guess the rationale for ND is that this next years seniors will be his first full recruiting class graduating. if he doesn’t win, and win against rivals and bigger programs, he is done.
December 2nd, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Anyone hear the new Nixon tapes today? Fantastic stuff, and we thought bush was bad. He was hoping they changed the republican party name after him!
December 2nd, 2008 at 8:42 pm
the loss of mcclinton is starting to rear its head.
December 2nd, 2008 at 8:48 pm
evan turner is pretty sweet.
December 2nd, 2008 at 8:58 pm
Iowa had a change to tie at the end of that game but missed the front end of a one and one.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Fuck, OSU and Illinois are totally going to let two slip away for the Big 10 here.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:02 pm
that is a whole lot of orange at Illinois. OSU is going to win.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:04 pm
a 21% FT shooter.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:04 pm
Wow, no way Miami would have lost this game with McClinton. Big 10 steals one in Miami.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Sparty
- Orange Crush, man. The Assembly Hall is actually a pretty tough place to play. Fairweather and fickle-ass fans, though.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:06 pm
OSU is a young team. they shot the lights out in the 2nd half.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:08 pm
bsanders-i hate it when we are playing there.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:09 pm
In this awful economy, I suppose someone not losing their job is newsworthy. Otherwise, who gives a shit about Charlie Weis and his .500 team?
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Sparty
- I grew up in Champaign, so I know what you mean. Once Weber gets his new recruits they should be back to the top of the Big 10 regularly. I used to cover Weber at SIU when I was in college. Listening to him yell in practice is great. When he gets really worked up he squeaks.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:11 pm
illinois holds on, and Perdue Chicken wins tonight, Big 10 has a chance.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Illinois is totally going to blow this. It’s what they do.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:25 pm
off-topic
USC is wearing their home jerseys against UCLA. Is this Pete Carroll way of saying “This state is mine little man!” for that spread that the Bruins ran at the beginning of the season? If so, I think I’ll hate the men of Troy a lot less than even before…
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Even putting MJ’s kid in at the end for defense wasn’t enough to save this game for the Illini. What horrible clock management.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:26 pm
they sure did blow it. not even getting a shot off??? that is terrible.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:26 pm
You were right bsanders. that was terrible by illinois
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Nope. Apparently he and Neuheisel talked about it at the beginning of the year. UCLA and USC used to do that when they shared one stadium. UCLA is even saying that if the NCAA does dock USC for a timeout, they’ll take one at the beginning of the game to make it even. Carroll isn’t doing this to rub it in anyone’s face; quite the opposite, actually.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:28 pm
makblunt-neuheisel wants them to wear those jerseys too. the ncaa is penalizing USC a TO in each half, so neuheisel is burning a TO at the start of the 1st and the 3rd quarter to keep it even.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Keep championing the little guy, Dickie V. Isn’t that what he’s known for?
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:38 pm
I would love to hear a Duke fan’s thoughts on Jon Scheyer. Mole’s a Dukie right?
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:44 pm
I wonder what TBL’s stat line was for tonight. I’m guessing 10, 4 and 2.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:46 pm
TBL fucked around and got a triple single.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Scheyer is well on his way to JJ Reddick love from the opposing fans.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Purdue’s hanging around. It would help if Duke would stop nailing threes every time they get it back under 10.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Some ugly wenches in that crowd in West Lafayette.
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:19 pm
crushed. lost by 1 fucking point. guy makes 2 FTs with 6 seconds left, guy on our team misses a shot at hte buzzer, rebound shot just missed. think it was 75-74. we had it.
i didn’t shoot well, missed two open three’s late. pissed. think i finished with 10 points (but only shot like 2-7 on three’s). worse than anything, i picked up my 5th foul with 15 mins left in the second half (2 20 min halves, running clock). had to virtually tie my hands behind my back the rest of the way because our bench player sucked ass and i didnt want to come out.
hurts. may call in sick tomorrow.
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:22 pm
oh, and that ejection in the miami game was a joke. what a terrible call. ref probably had money on the game.
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:26 pm
Note to Purdue, it’s near impossible to beat a top 5 team when you go EIGHT MINUTES without a FG.
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:29 pm
If they ever decide to make a Mask II, the can totally cast Kyle Singer alongside Cher.
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:33 pm
wow, purdue looks terrible.
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:36 pm
what a block by henderson. duke is rolling up 19. where’s nolan smith? hurt?
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:39 pm
If East Carolina had continued their good start this season, I wonder how hard Lou Holtssssssshhhhhhhhh would have been pushing his son for the ND job.
I’m glad Fat Charlie is staying, I hate ND. Although Parseghian did bring a certain amount of class to the place.
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:49 pm
TBL, you gotta link this tomorrow. Simply incredible read:
The era that defined Wall Street is finally, officially over. Michael Lewis, who chronicled its excess in Liar’s Poker, returns to his old haunt to figure out what went wrong.
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:52 pm
@bsanders… Not sure what was bad about it. McClinton smacked Crater across the face. It was deliberate. Heat of the moment, but still deliberate. No place for it in a basketball game. That’s an ass kicking waiting to happen in a pick up game…
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:08 pm
Michael Lewis is one of my all-time favorite writers.
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:09 pm
The only problem I had with it was the explanation. The refs said he was kicked out because he drew blood and the OSU trainer said there was no blood. Don’t lie about it, just kick him out.
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:09 pm
knock vitale all you want but his hatred of the tie up rule is dead the hell on. one of the worst rules in sports.
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:12 pm
stay classy lafayette douchebags!
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:12 pm
Still waiting for TBL to admit how wrong he was on Jon Scheyer…
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:32 pm
Funny thing about the Miami/OSU call, was it was late. Where have we seen that before?? (Of course, they ended up getting it right both times..just late).
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:43 pm
“Bad call. Bad call!
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:47 pm
It’ll never happen. I can already hear the excuses…
Also, TBL, please tell us again how overrated Duke is.

The scene: Milford, CT. Subway Sandwich Headquarters.
The date: Monday, December 1, 2009, 4:00pm.
Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick enters a conference room full of Subway executives.
Subway CEO: So then we have a deal?
Swarbick: Yes. He’s fine with it.
Subway CEO: Excellent. Then it’s agreed. For each Notre Dame home game, the team will take the field to “Victory March.” After, the band will play its rendition of “Five Dollar Footlong” and Charlie will walk out of the tunnel holding a Subway footlong in each hand. Have the NBC execs agreed to their part of the bargain?
Swarbick: Yes. Charlie will be shown eating one or both of the sandwiches at least four times per game.
Subway CEO: Then it is done.
Swarbick: He had one condition…
Subway CEO: And that is?
Swarbick: He picks the subs.
Subway CEO: Of course.

Sadness. That should read 2008 instead of 2009.
/spent way too much time on an anonymous internet comment
December 3rd, 2008 at 12:13 am
theTed with the best post of any blog in 2008… No matter how much time spent, that was absolutely solid… +1 JS…

@Wally’s World
Thank you sir. It’s good to know that people are still up and reading. It was not in vain.
December 3rd, 2008 at 2:16 am
@theTed
Win!
Weis can’t sumo wrestle Jared?
December 3rd, 2008 at 7:51 am
I thought you said that Urban Meyer was coming to South Bend?
December 3rd, 2008 at 8:53 am
it was the right call. dude intentionally went for OSU players face. em>
Sparty- what happened the play before that? did you see the replay? probably not
Replays showed Crater had slapped McClinton in a similar fashion seconds earlier. After the game, Haith said McClinton told him he ”reacted” to being hit. Haith wasn’t sure if the ejection with a flagrant foul will cost McClinton more time
