Colors: Pete Carroll is on to Something
College Football December 4th. 2008, 11:45am
As an homage to Saturday tradition, USC will wear their red jerseys as the road team, violating an NCAA rule stipulating that visitors must wear white. The Pac-10 will dock the Trojans a timeout. UCLA, in the spirit of fair play, will call another timeout. After two ludicrous delays at the beginning of each half, the game will proceed.
The rule’s intent is clear. Two teams can’t wear the same color. It’s confusing for both spectators and participants. It wouldn’t be prudent. But, with USC and UCLA, where the colors are clearly distinct, why insist on white? If anything, it’s easier to distinguish cardinal and sky blue than white and sky blue.
Colors are fun. They spice up the wardrobe. They enhance the visual spectacle. Imposed white is not necessary for order. Both teams wear their natural color. If the colors are too similar, the away team defers and wears white. It works in European soccer. It can work for the NCAA.
The NCAA allows all other manners of uniform insanity. Nike teams once wore mismatched sleeves. Teams may wear the same color jersey and pant. The University of Oregon can singe the retinas with a different variation of unpleasant in each game. Allowing both teams to wear home uniforms would not be nearly as distracting or uncouth.
If a blanket rule change is just too zany to contemplate, make this a special rivalry thing. Keep the rule in place. When there is a rivalry game, instead of taking away timeouts, have the visiting team pay a nominal “fine†to a charity or a scholarship fund. (This should be about academics after all.)
When the Maize and Blue play the Scarlet and Gray, they should be wearing Maize and Blue and Scarlet and Gray. Alabama should wear crimson and Auburn should wear blue. It should be the same with Cal-Stanford and, if feasible, every other rivalry.
USC wearing red is neither cheekiness nor intimidation. They’re going to battle. The colors testify to the occasion’s majesty. Hopefully, UCLA breaks out the sky blue next year.

December 4th, 2008 at 11:49 am
reason 3,435,567 why the NCAA is ridiculous.
December 4th, 2008 at 11:50 am
I did not know UCLA would be burning a timeout as well. Very cool of them.

I am a nightmare walking, psychopath talking
King of my jungle just a gangster stalking
Living life like a firecracker quick is my fuse
Then dead as a deathpack the colors I choose
Red or Blue, Cuz or Blood, it just don’t matter
Sucker die for your life when my shotgun scatters
We gangs of L.A. will never die – just multiply
December 4th, 2008 at 11:51 am
Love this idea, I never use the white jerseys in video games
December 4th, 2008 at 11:52 am
i’m just guessing, but maybe the ncaa requires one team to wear white is for players who are color-blind? (i’m being serious.)

Quick side thought: I was watching Hannah Storm on the four letter this morning. Am I wrong, or is she a fake rack away from being the ultimate milf?
December 4th, 2008 at 11:53 am
Im sure it wont be, but damn I hope this is a good game
December 4th, 2008 at 11:54 am
Apparently, Pete Carroll talked to Rick Neuhisell about this beforehand and got his approval before going public. It’s an homage to when both teams played in the LA Colisseum. And the reason the NCAA has that rule to begin with is back when TV was in black and white different colors would all look the same. It hasn’t really come up again until now, so I would expect them to change the rule during the offseason.

Couldn’t they tell their own team by the helmets?
/also serious
December 4th, 2008 at 11:57 am
spot on, ty…couldn’t agree more.
December 4th, 2008 at 11:58 am
I miss home whites in hockey. The Blackhawks white jersies are awesome.
December 4th, 2008 at 11:59 am
Colors are fun.
I’m still letting that one sink in.
Clown – I’m hazy on my gangsta rap, but is that Ice T?
December 4th, 2008 at 11:59 am
@clown- the rap song from the movie Colors?
December 4th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
seriously…when did they change that stupid ass rule? colors at home, even after a couple years, still don’t seem ‘right.’
December 4th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
That’s it. Colors. Well done, Clown. LA, colors, and Colors.

I had always thought the rule was in place for two reasons, Black and White TVs and potential color blindness of players. One fo those reasons has essentially gone away. Anybody have any idea how similar red and blue unis would look to a colorblind guy?
December 4th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
There won’t be TWO ludicrous delays at the start of each half, just one. USC’s timeout is docked, they don’t actually get the timeout.
December 4th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
TBL…good comparison with the cindy lauper. pac-10 football = girls just trying to have fun.
December 4th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
Red or Blue, Cuz or Blood, it just don’t matter…
I always thought the line was “Crips” or Bloods, but I guess I was wrong.
December 4th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
I’m siding with USC on this one.
No, this is not the end of the world.
Funny thing is, if they asked the NCAA if they could wear some butt-ugly gold “alternate jersey,” they’d probably say yes. Imagine the number of jerseys they could sell!

What hurts the retinas more? Oregon’s uniforms or Boise State’s field?
December 4th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
I think my HDTV is going to explode every time Boise plays at home.
December 4th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
I’d like to see Oklahoma and Alabama both wear their home jerseys if they play for the national championship.
December 4th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
I think Texas should wear the burnt orange in the Big 12 championship game.
December 4th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
Personally, I HATE home whites myself, especially in the NHL. In fact, one of my favorite jerseys is the Blackhawks black or red jersies (more than the white). Also Sabres dark blue & gold (especially the original one)
i’m just guessing, but maybe the ncaa requires one team to wear white is for players who are color-blind? (i’m being serious.)
I’m being serious too, and I thought the white was the problem. Example:The Bills changed their white helmets to a red-based one in the mid 80’s because Jim Kelly is color blind and couldn’t differentiate the helmets in the AFC East, because all of them were predominately white.
December 4th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
It might be, JayV – I cut and pasted from another site.
December 4th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
gotta go with Boise State’s field. i have talked to a few people about lasik and they said i cannot wait a boise state game for at lesat 2 years post-surgery.
December 4th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
jpq, I thought that Joe Ferguson was the reason why they changed their helmets because he thought they were ugly. Maybe I’m just imagining things.
The interesting thing is, the NCAA won’t let LSU wear their traditional whites at home unless the opponent agrees to it. Usually it happens except for the occasional dick move.
What I like is the way the NFL lets the home team decide for themselves that they can wear white at home. And, of course, this almost only happens when Sun Belt teams force the opponent to wear their home darks on the road for a 95-degree game.
Nothing like making heatstroke part of your home-field advantage.
December 4th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
hyperbole or truth, doesn’t matter…that’s funny.
December 4th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
I don’t see any difference since this supposed change.
December 4th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
The black Hawks jersies are pretty fucking cool. I love when they wear them at home and they play Back In Black as they enter the ice. But I still think the White sweaters are better.
December 4th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
doesn’t work for North Texas…and that makes me sad.
December 4th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
Oops, spencer, I meant the region for the NFL, not the college conference. I can remember the Cardinals making the Saints wear black in September when it was like 130 on the field.
Now that’s when you need a butt-ugly gold alternate jersey.
December 4th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
best friend is color blind and he used to really struggle during some of his soccer matches where both teams wore colors. for football, the helmet differential is obviously somewhat valid, but with the speed of the game, i’d still think it’s a huge problem.
herbie once said that just walking on boise state’s field is a complete mind-fuck.

Jay, you made me wonder if I was having a “senior moment”, and it looks like you were right about it being Fergy, and I was right about the “why”:
Fact #7 – In February of 1984, the Bills announced that they were switching their helmet color, going to red after wearing white headgear since 1962. While the color changed, the charging buffalo on the side and blue facemasks both remained. It was speculated that the color switch was to help quarterback Joe Ferguson distinguish his receivers from opposing defenders, especially the three division opponents (Dolphins, Patriots, and Colts) who also wore white helmets. Ferguson threw 25 interceptions in 1983 and 17 in 1984.

I’m down…I wish Michigan or OkState never had to wear white, they don’t look near as good as the colored jerseys.
I mean shit the NFL has given in on this. Dallas wears their Whites at home while everyone else is opposite. If the No Fun League can do it why can’t others.
December 4th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
I think it’s to bring in more gay fans, who know it’s an affront to wear white after Labor Day
December 4th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
Dave Dameshek has been pushing for this on his ESPN radio show (and then podcast) for a while now. He had both Carroll and Neuhisel on his show to pitch them on the idea and both were in favor when they were on.
December 4th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
If you want to see some really serious ugly, check out some of the classic Michigan-Ohio St. games from the seventies. There’s at least one year where Michigan wears all white except for the helmet. It’s terrible.
I also agree on the home-whites for hockey, or at least having the option. The Red Wings look better in white.
