More Changes at ESPN Signify the End of the Boo-yah Era
ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings September 11th. 2006, 5:23pm
Sources inside the Worldwide Leader tell us that the NBA Shootaround team is the latest casualty in the ESPN bloodletting that is being characterized around the Bristol campus as the “End of the Boo-yah Era.”
In a deal that is nearing completion, host John Saunders, along with analysts Greg Anthony, Tim Legler, and Stephen A. Smith are being kicked to the curb. The new team, sources claim, will consist of Dan Patrick, Mike Wilbon, and Mark Jackson, the trio who worked together on ABC last season.
While the new team isn’t cast in concrete yet – i’s must be dotted and t’s must be crossed on Wilbon’s deal – Saunders, Anthony, and Legler will be reassigned to game coverage, sources say. Nobody’s exactly sure what will become of Smith. Suffice to say, NBA viewers won’t be forced to sit through another night of watching steam emit from Legler’s ears as he does battle with Screamin’ A. The plan is for the new team to rival TNT’s idyllic trio of Kenny the Jet, Sir Charles, and Ernie Johnson.
On a larger scale, this change signals yet another example of the end of the Boo-yah Era. We chose the phrase Boo-yah Era (don’t think it’s taken) because it exemplifies the attitude former honcho Mark Shapiro instilled at the network. He fell in love with people shouting on television. The blacker the better. The more bombastic and over the top, the sweeter the paycheck. Cold Pizza was his baby, too. And few at the network expect it to survive.
But slowly, over the last year, the Boo-yah Era has been virtually eliminated by new boss John Skipper. It may have been a subconscious change or an organic extension of Skipper’s personality, but the transformation is undeniable. After the jump, we chronicle a few subtle changes:
* Nu Skool vs. Old School. Remember that embarrassment? It’s gone. The buffoonery of Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless, slugging it out on the occasional weekday was awful. It was worse when it ruined our pleasant Sunday mornings. On the whole, Skip’s role at the network has been decreased. He has vanished without a trace from Sportscenter. He’s done at the .com. That disaster of a show, 1st and 10, is teetering on the brink of extinction. Whereas it used to kick off the afternoon screamfests (Jim Rome, ATH, PTI), it long ago fell out of prominence in favor of a show with actual substance, Outside the Lines. At least Skip’s still making in the ballpark of $750,000. (Kind of makes you wonder if Woody Paige was wise to quit his day job at the Denver Post, huh? Hopefully, he’s investing his $1.25 million a year wisely – and that’s probably a low estimate.)
* Quite possibly the most uncomfortable television in ESPN’s storied history were the days of bookish John Clayton being trotted out into the wilderness to do battle with career backup quarterback Sean Salisbury on the atrocious “Four Downs” NFL segment. Under the guise of discussing news, Salisbury would berate Clayton so badly that you almost felt bad for the guy. It was as if Salisbury – a very, very poor NFL quarterback – was taking out years of frustration on Clayton for all the times that sportscasters bashed him. We’re fairly certain the segment still exists in some fashion but it is no longer uncomfortable television where the jock picks on the journalist, and whomever screams loudest, wins. It’s no longer a one-on-one fight; now, it’s a tame fact or fiction segment.
* Scoop Jackson has been spayed and neutered. The guy spent the week writing about tennis. Need we say more? We’ve been giving this ink-stained wretch hell for weeks, but his tipping point may have come in July with this misinformed and silly piece that featured the humdinger: “Then I make the point: “Which means you all have a better chance to make it to the NBA than you do doing what I do for a living.” In early August he had this disastrous chat with readers. Scoop’s been on a short leash ever since. (The results will probably be catastrophic. His core readers – his family and parolees – liked his ghetto shtick and will probably turn away from his watered down product. And he turned off so many readers with his initial racist offerings that they won’t click on his stories, regardless. We’ve been reading; they aren’t missing anything.)
With the Boo-yah Era apparently over at ESPN, two logical questions remain: 1) Ummm, Stu Scott? 2) How does Michael Irvin still have a job?
The one-eyed bandit has supposedly toned down his rhymin’ and stealin’ on Sportscenter, our source says. Instead of quickly switching to reruns of 90210 when we see DJ Stewy on the tube, we’ll be monitoring his delivery closely.
As for why the Worldwide leader has someone with a checkered background of cocaine, chronic, and strippers conducting interviews, our on-campus source says the Playmaker “tests well.” In TV-speak, this means viewers like him. Perhaps it’s because he’s a flashy dresser. Or because the suits view Irvin’s modern-day minstrel act as harmless, Flavor of Love entertainment. As long as Irvin’s just talking about football, kissing TO’s ass, defending lawless athletes and not pulling a Stephen A. and veering into baseball and social issues (things outside his comfort zone), Irvin’s tolerable.

Very interesting stuff. And if Skip is making $750,000, I’m going to go gut myself with a rusty knife.
September 11th, 2006 at 8:58 pm
thats a great post, good update on whats goin on at my fav (only) tv station
September 11th, 2006 at 9:03 pm
i concur with Jip. interesting stuff. hopefully the quality will improve and less shouting and more analyzing. thanks for the info.
September 11th, 2006 at 10:29 pm
This is some of the best news I’ve heard all year. I can almost hear Dan Patrick or Keth Olbermann giving Stu a big boo yah on his way out the door.
September 12th, 2006 at 3:10 am
ESPN just brought Coach Thorpe into the fold as an “insider” today – hopefully they let him do some on air stuff because the guy really knows his stuff. For those of you that don’t know him he’s the personal trainer for Udonis Haslem, Kevin Martin and a couple other NBA players and he gets a ton of attention before the Draft for making non-household names the “buzz worthy” players leading up to the Draft.
September 12th, 2006 at 6:11 pm
Too bad Olberman’s got the cushiest job in the world at MSNBC. He needs to come back to the worldwide leader. I still can’t say the same for Kilborn, though.
September 12th, 2006 at 6:15 pm
Great stuff here. I’ve been voicing displeasure with ESPN to anyone who will listen for the last two years. It’s to the point where I won’t even watch the station if I can help it. I didn’t even realize the actual consequences of “the worldwide leader” attaining the rights to MNF until I was forced to watch it for nearly 6 hours last night. They’ve grown so fat on their market dominance that the product itself has turned to absolute shit. Save for a few voices on the website, I’d be happy if it was gone for good. You’ve given me at least a small glimmer of hope that maybe one day, half a decade from now, things won’t be so bad.
September 12th, 2006 at 6:19 pm
It’s about damn time. Thank you John Skipper, and thank you Tom Jackson for finally calling Michael Irvin out for being retarded on air.
September 12th, 2006 at 6:21 pm
Saw Lazy/Wall Eye himself on Primetime with Mike Ditka, and he was blackin’ it up as much as ever; seemed to actually have turned it up a notch in order to hang more properly with da Coach. Of all those you named in your article, Cock-eyed Blackness is by far the worst, both for his ubiquity and bland negro stylings – the boo-yah era is far from ovah.
September 12th, 2006 at 6:35 pm
Hope these changes make it NFL Primetime (& should you still call it that when it airs in the afternoon?) soon. The one yesterday was almost unwatchable. Ugh.
September 12th, 2006 at 6:37 pm
Can’t agree more about Skoop the Poop…His writing is atrocious and it seems to be just an avenue for him to drop his ghetto lingo, rap analogies and references and shout outs…a way for him to constantly flash his ghetto card for us…I read his column, only because I am a masochist and love to infuriate myself. I couldn’t agree more that after his series on the US Tennis Open, his ghetto cred is shot. I did enjoy reading the tennis articles. Was fun searching for his normal rap references and lingo stylings….and finding everything “whited” up for tennis. Makes it hard to take any future columns in which he reverts back to his blacker style seriously….from my point of view, it’s all an act. His sucking…that isn’t an act.
September 12th, 2006 at 6:39 pm
veeeeery nice….to say Salisbury Steak was a “very, very poor NFL quarterback” is being whoppingly generous-if he’d a stunk it would have been an improvement…..it’s been said before-ESPN is to sports what MTV is to music…..
September 12th, 2006 at 7:43 pm
I started a new drinking game the other night while watching “Stump the Schwab.” Take a shot for every Stu ghetto-ism…you know, “big ups” and “don’t be skurred,” stuff like that…and good luck not getting absolutely hammered within the first minute and a half of the show.
September 13th, 2006 at 1:34 am
While they’re at it can they do something about the insufferable Vitale and Berman?
September 13th, 2006 at 1:48 am
I just got an episode of 1st & 10 recently…when did Woody Paige get a new set of teeth?
September 13th, 2006 at 3:17 am
C’mon, if new boss really want to make ESPN more watchable, he’d dump Chris Berman, who has been taking up space (and a whole lot of oxygen) for years. Anyone else count the number times he called David Ortiz Big “Pappy” and not Big “Papi” during the All-Star Home Run Derby? Had to be at least 15 before some associate producer finally screamed at him to knock it off. It’s just painful and sad, really.
September 13th, 2006 at 3:50 am
Wow! I’m a little concerned about how elevated my mood is after reading this piece! I’d sort of become numb to ESPN’s suckitude, until reading this uplifting story.
I grew up during ESPN’s Golden Era . . . in high school, I’d have breakfast with Keith and Dan, and in college, when SC was still only 30 minutes long, I’d skip class, and watch 8 episodes in a row while playing NHL ‘94. One of the classes I often missed was English Lit, which explains that really long run-on sentence I just typed.
Somewhere along the line, ESPN started going down the tubes. It was such a gradual change, I didn’t really notice, until one day, the network was dominated by screaming, look-at-me, morons. Calling it the Boo-Yah Era, PERFECTLY captures what happened. ESPN had gone from being a network grounded in Sports Journalism, with a dash of irrevrant personality, to some weird entertainment show where the hosts made themselves the focus of the programming.
Bayless must be the first to go, followed by Lazy-Eye Stu and his def poetry jams. Send Scoop packing, and let Bill Simmons carry his bags (since they both hate eachother’s race). Finally, charter a flight for Berman’s fat ass, and make sure to shove Stephen A. out the door once you reach altitude.
If the rumors are true, I’ll be sad to see John Saunders go, but let’s return the network to guys like Bob Ley, Dan Patrick, Mike Wilbon, and the other journalists who respect that SPORTS are the story, and they are but the messenger.
September 13th, 2006 at 8:17 am
I think I finally started to hate Patrick from listening to his radio show. I realized that he’s not that bright and boy does he have an ego. Then when he does product endorsements, you kind of realize he doesn’t give a shit about the “serious journalist” thing. Olbermann is great, and Kilborn may have sometimes been insufferable, but he’s a bright guy, and you never felt like he took things too seriously like the rest of the puffed-up pretenders.
September 13th, 2006 at 11:27 am
With the exception of PTI and the occasional checking of ESPNews for scores, I do my dead level best to watch only actual games on any of the networks. I think PTI has been a double edged sword. While the show itself works because of the chemistry between TK and Wilbon, it produced a litany of bastard offspring yelling-is-entertaining-even-if-we-have-to-create-arguments-where-none-exist shows that really led ESPN downhill. Are they past the point of no return? Probably, but hopefully they’ll try to turn it around anyway.
September 13th, 2006 at 4:05 pm
I don’t know much about this blog, I jumped over from a link on deadspin, but the post and many of the comments verge on blatant racism. Maybe if you don’t like Stu Scott “blacking it up” go watch CMT and log rolling. Don’t read scoop jackson (no one else is). The poor performance has nothing to do with skin color it has to do with lack of professionalism and cock sucking attempts to connect with a demographic. I did appreciate the comment about Irvin’s minstrel show. It makes sense. It is the Muhammed Ali paradox. White people were scared of him when he was young, brash and outspoken. Now he can’t talk and he is a figure head paraded in front of people.
September 13th, 2006 at 6:29 pm
I agree with Vito Gambini, PTI is actually a very good show and it created a lot of lousy screaming sportswriter shows. So much so that I now actually empathize with athletes and can see how a lot of them hate these spiteful windbags. I ddisagree with Pinko however, I love Dan Patrick . Even though he can be smug at times on his show he gets ribbed about it on his show and jokes about it from time to time so you can’t relly can’t take it too seriously. Dr. Drew is the same way on Loveline. Unlike the sportswriters Patrick actually has a pretty good sense of humor and never nastily rips athletes. He also is very professional when he does SC.
September 14th, 2006 at 3:56 pm
While Skipper is cleaning house it’d be great if Vitale and Corso
get sucked into his vacuum cleaner too. Losing the really lame song
parodies on Mike and Mike would be an upgrade as would banning
Eric Assillyass (or whatever his name is) as a substitute co-host.
September 14th, 2006 at 9:30 pm
Man, I thought I was the only one who was fed up with this network. Contrary to what ‘your mom is so black’ said, nobody who has spoken out against Mr. Boo-yah and Screamin’ A said anything racist. I, too, switch channels when Boo-yah is yammering on and on. I watch sports to get the results and see some highlights. I don’t need my senses offended with the hip-hop, made up words that are too often heard on SC. The Cold Pizzza crowd should be force-fed about 50 extra large pizzas with everything. Watching them all barf would be more pleasant than listening to these knuckleheads pontificate and screaming over each other. Maybe George Grande will leave the Reds broadcasting booth and come back. Bring back Charlie Steiner, also.
September 14th, 2006 at 11:45 pm
Berman, Screamin’ Stephen A, Skip Bayless, Woody Paige, Michael Irvin, Stuie Scott, that stupid back-up QB, Vitale, basically all color anouncers, should be marooned on an island together and left to fight to the death. Its too bad ESPN has to put these guys on the TV that clearly have such little intellegence. Seriously, how many classes do you think Michael Irvin attended at “The U”.
One positive thing is about Monday Night Football where they have the sort of capitans introducing the players in the beginning of the game instead of allowing the players to introduce themselves. I’ll be honest, I miss hearing where Koren Robinson went to elementery school but I think the new system is much better!!
September 15th, 2006 at 12:57 am
How about getting rid of Mike and Mike? Their radio/TV show sucks, and bring in some former players THAT WE KNOW!! Sure, I know Michael Ervin and Steve Young, and Marc Jackson, but what teams did Salisbury play for? I don’t know. Tim Legler? I don’t know.
Look at TNT. They have Kenny the Jet and Hall of Famer Sir Charles, and let’s not forget Magic.
Fox and CBS have Hall of Fame NFL players on their shows. How about ESPN gettin some more?!!
September 15th, 2006 at 12:59 am
Quite Frankly, that Stephen A. is REEEEEE-TARDED!!!
Dee-Dee-Dee!!!!!
September 15th, 2006 at 3:21 am
ESPN still has a long way to go before they are legit again. I could be wrong, but it seems like they’re showing a few sports again(that does not include poker, drum corps, cheer leading, darts, dominoes, and sorry but bowling). How has Cold Pizza lasted this long and then somehow spawned 1st and 10? Skip needs to be go. I enjoy PTI when they actually know something about the topic, but with Tony and Wilbon are gone so much it doesn’t make for a good show. Too often it is two guys with no chemistry hesitantly speaking on a topic they know nothing about and trying to be funny. Jim Rome needs to burn in a fire. Mike and Mike aren’t too bad, but it’s sports radio. If they didn’t have to do half of the gimmicks they do for radio it would be a good show. ESPNRadio commercial breaks have to be industry leaders, but that’s another day…. I can’t listen to ESPN Radio. Stephen. A Smith…bye. I don’t mind sportswriters talking about sports as they do on Around the Horn, but substance is too often lost with the annoying 12 year-old host. I prefer shows like Sports Reports and Outside The Lines because you actually get something out of those shows. Even if they create something out of nothing it is going to be more informative and in depth than you will find on most ESPN shows.
On another note, I don’t think adding successful players to a team will help anything. As long as the person knows the sport I think they can pull it off. If they have had experience inside the sport that can be even better.
September 15th, 2006 at 2:57 pm
You have not been racist? Send the comments that you have wriiten about Stuart and Stephen to http://www.stormfornt.com and see their reaction. I will bet you will get positive reactions.
NFL player on ESPN with superbowl rings:
Michale Irvin 3
Darren Woodson 3
Steve Young 1
Mark Schlerath 3; played with John Elway
Mike Dikta 2 I think; 1 playing and 1 coaching
Jaws; a good player and analysist
Eric Allen; a good player and analysist
I will agree with you on ther other ones.
Let’s see that’s how many for ESPN: about twelve superbowl rings and some probowls.
Kenny the Jet are you serious, if their was no Hakeem he would be a scrub, maybe like Starbury.
September 27th, 2006 at 5:43 pm
if the boo-yah era is over, why does stephen A. still have show?
September 30th, 2006 at 6:54 am
I totally agree that ESPN has lost it. Just like a lot of you, I only watch PTI. Sportscenter is no longer for sports highlights but rather the latest news stories that all today’s overpaid attention starving athletes create. Just like MTV no longer plays videos, Sportscenter no longer shows sports. During football season, it’s T.O. For basketball, it’s Shaq and Kobe. And what about crucifying A-Rod? Even if he was a little flirtatious with women, Harold Reynolds being upset about the overplaying of that story is more than justified. That certainly played into his firing and the same goes for Jason Whitlock’s criticizing of their own people. And don’t even get me started on the Red Sox-Yankees. I know they hate each other, but does every game have to be televised? Nobody cares anymore, there are 30 other teams in baseball – show one of their games.
Speaking of Whitlock and Reynolds, their firings remind me of a situation with a certain sports organization. That would be the Chicago Cubs of a few years ago when Steve Stone was forced to resign because he criticized the players and organization for their underachievement. Stone was let go because he spoke the truth and expected the Cubs to hold themselves accountable for their bad season. But like usual, they had excuses and put the blame elsewhere. This is exactly why the Cubs will not win the World Series in the forseeable future – they don’t do enough every year to make themselves a contender and then just blame the Billy Goat when they miss the playoffs. Back to Whitlock, Stone, and Reynolds – sure they were a little out of line speaking by speaking those criticisms in a public arena but they all stood up for what they believed in. I can respect that, but ESPN, just like the Cubs can’t listen to anyone who tells it like it is. All 3 of them were exactly right in what they argued and instead of being respected they got canned.
Even the analysts who played their respective sports are reduced to answering questions that anybody with a hint of common sense would know. For instance, they ask Marc Schlereth (who talks like an oaf) if the Raiders are going to win this week. He answers by saying how everything is tough in the National Football League and if you start an inexperienced quarterback like Andrew Walter in the National Football League that it’s going to be difficult to win. No shit, my dog could have told me that. Part of the blame goes to Marc, but more should go to the writers of the show. Nobody cares about their opinions, show more post-game interviews from respectable guys who have something intelligent to say, like Craig Biggio or Dwight Freeney. Or show more than just scores from other sports like hockey and soccer.
The whole problem with the current opinionated nature of ESPN’s shows is that if the stated opinions are wrong, nothing happens. I’m not saying people should be fired, just that anyone can look up Daunte Culpepper’s turnover rate and predict that the Dolphins will lose this week. Basically, they make predictions and analysis on information that any sports fan has the capability to find. There is no inside information coming from the coaches. Essentially, most of the analysts at ESPN serve no purpose what so ever.
Despite all that’s wrong, there are still some knowledgable and competant people at ESPN. Jaworski loves to show game tape, a rarity among football analysts. The old Baseball Tonight crew of Karl Ravech, Tim Kurkjian, Peter Gammons, John Kruk, and Harold Reynolds was the best ever assembled on any ESPN show. Of course Wilbon and Kornheiser, but also Greg Anthony, Tim Legler, and Tom Jackson even though they were usually surrounded by idiots. All are intelligent and knew their respective sports very well.
As for who needs to go. Absolutely #1 at the top of the heap is Chris Berman. If I have to hear “rumblin’ bumblin’ stumblin’” one more time I am going to go on a murderous rampage. As a buddy of mine once said, he’s like the guy at ESPN that everyone hates but there since it started so instead of telling him how annoying he is, they just kiss his ass. Someone needs to inform him that Tom Brady is not his son and rooting for the Jets by yelling “J E T S, JETS JETS JETS” on air is not objective. But worst of all, it’s the nicknames. It is not okay to refer to yourself by your own nickname. Calling yourself “the Schwam” is retarded. Your name is Chris Berman, other people can use your nickname, but you are not allowed. I know that I am not the only person that finds this unbelievably annoying. And why must he give athletes nicknames to? For instance, when going over a Steelers highlight, I fully expect him to say something like this: “And Santonio ‘I’m friends with Sherlock’ Holmes makes a nice catch on the sidelines for a first down.” Why does he feel the need to do this? It makes him sound like a “rumblin bumblin stumblin” idiot. His name is Santonio Holmes, he plays for the Steelers, he is not a detectve. So, please fire Chris “I have an ego the size of a blimp” Berman to spare us all more pain and suffering.
October 2nd, 2006 at 8:31 pm
Nothing will change at ESPN. They are just like every other large media outlet. They have shows full of stupid black people acting like idiots (Stu, Scoop, Irvin, etc.). They show us the bad side of black athletes like TO, a random NBA player, Bonds. Don’t you get it? It’s MTV for sports fans. Just like gun-toting ho-pimping rappers have been mainstreamed by the music industry, the same is happening before our eyes in sports.
Why? Because major media is owned by rich white guys. They want to push their neo-conservative agenda, and the easiest way to do that is expose the world to black people being idiots. I’m a white 30-something (really, I am), and I’m supposed to think that African Americans are bad. Sure they can do this by portraying them in a negative way, but after a while that starts to look suspicious and biased. So they promote the hell out of them supposedly in the name of diversity and racial equality. But how can you have equality when there is no QUALITY. They reinforce the (very incorrect) stereotype that blacks are dumb, violent, loud, etc.
Jason Whitlock is right on with his comments… just like 50 cent and other such rappers, ESPN “personalities” like Stu and Scoop and Irvin are nothing more than bojanggling, selling out their race for a paycheck, allowing themselves to be held up “diversity”. ESPN won’t put a black man or woman on the air that doesn’t yell, rhyme, whatever. They’re putting people on air that will reinforce what they want us to believe.
Don’t believe what you see on TV, or read in the newspaper. Do you really think that because 95% of the criminals chased down on the show “Cops” are black or Hispanic that blacks and Hispanics commit 95% of the crime in this country? Please. Be smarter than that. We are shown what the powers that be want us to see. Even on those rare occasions when it’s the truth, it’s rarely the whole truth. The media is no longer the voice of the people as envisioned by Thomas Payne and embodied by Woodward and Bernstein… it is nothing more, or less, than “Big Brother” without the scary title.
October 3rd, 2006 at 12:43 am
I’ll admit that when I first started paying attention to the Worldwide Leader, I was in high school. Time reference? Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann were a team on the air and they ESPN didn’t go overboard with coverage.
A few thoughts:
First, I hear a lot of hate for Chris Berman. He might have lost his novelty, but paired with Tom Jackson on NFL Primetime, there was something entertaining and fun about football. You could feel their enthusiasm. I miss that. Nothing against Stu and Ditka, but you are not Priiimetiiiime. That is Boomer and TJ; period.
Secondly, PTI is the one show that I wish I could watch on a regular basis. There was a reason it was been copied so much, it works.
Thirdly, Stephen A. Smith might be a talking head. Stu Scott might be a sell out. But compared to anyone else on that network, what else is there? I see some anchors of SportCenter that were reporters a few years back. Seems like they are stretching a bit.
Fourth, Skip and Woody are probably overpaid for what they do. But Woody plays into the dofus role and Skip got caged. I remember when he was a guest on a Jim Rome show and he held no punches. In fact, he still doesn’t. But nowadays, he seems tamed, like the powers that be told him to follow the rules and play nice or never play again.
Fifth, ESPN is not the Worldwide Leader of anything but selling out. Jason Whitlock…gone. Harold Reynolds…gone. People want to get rid of Stu Scott and Chris Berman and Stephen A….huh? Why, because you don’t like them? For his demeanor, Stephen A. has good points. Stu and Berman, add some splash and color. If anything, Stu Scott became overexposed, being a host for how many different games? Dream Job anyone? Reason, put simply, people watch, ratings good, money comes in. Regardless of how fat and happy ESPN is now, it is due for a crash. Getting rid of these voices and characters is a recipe for failure.
Finally, there is some hope. There are a couple anchors on the network are actually…good? NOt much, but something to build on if network brass had a clue. But not for the .com. I looked forward to Jason Whitlock. Now I got Bill Simmons. Don’t get me wrong, but one is the loneliest number and not enough to salvage Page 2. Damn shame. Some of the best ideas came from there. ESPN might be the top dog for now, but for how much longer? Brass will reign everything in until ratings drop, lossen the leash to raise ratings, then tighten it again. By the way, I am glad that Keith and Dan are on the air, even if it is radio, but it would be better on TV. Now, bring back NFL Primtime with Chris Berman and Tom Jackson. Bring back some enthusiasm to the network listen to the message, not the messenger.
October 5th, 2006 at 2:22 pm
This guy may not be Boo-yah material, but also needs to get out: Colin Cowherd. I can’t stand this guy, he cares more about himself then the story at hand. What a douche.
After WWE wrestler Eddie Guerrero’s death, Cowherd ripped us fans callin us “booger eaters.” I am a wrestling fan, but not a booger eater.
BTW….Cowherd?! What kind of name is that? His show is full of cowherd anyways. Hell, his name should be Colin Coward, because that’s what he is!
October 5th, 2006 at 2:26 pm
Now if Mike and Mike can leave as well, I’m all for it.
October 11th, 2006 at 1:44 am
Is there anyone with old Sportscenters on tape who could post some on youtube.com or something similar? Not only were the anchors back then infinitely more humorous, less smug, and less reliant on movie quotes, the show filled the same 60-minute time-slot without the endless barrage of highlights, meaningless stats and debate segments.
I could watch the same Sportscenter 2-3 times a morning in college. I cannot make it even through 10 minutes of the current show.
The past couple of years would have been the perfect time for CNN-SI to have premiered (instead of a decade ago when SC was still doing ok). They could have brought anchors such as Rich Eisen, Steiner, Olbermann (by also giving him a CNN show), etc to their network and actually made it work.
Like everything in business and media–monopolies create inferior products.
October 11th, 2006 at 2:44 pm
An old anchor that no one mentions but I thought was just as good as Olberman was Charlie Stiener. He has a great job with the Dodgers now but I really miss seeing him on ESPN.
October 23rd, 2006 at 10:57 pm
Scratch that. Anthony, Legler and Smith stay. Saunders is the only one to go. So much for the end of the boo-yah era.

What kind of B.S. blog is this. What Stephen A too black for you Cro- Magnon fools?
November 30th, 2006 at 8:54 pm
Freedom of speech is many times taken to another level, especially on bull**** blogs like this! I feel that I’m sometimes ashamed at American citizens’ implied racism…matter of fact some of you don’t imply at all. You just shine through the pages via your scribes.
I’m really wondering…does too many black men in suits intimidate you folks, especially, those who CONSTANTLY have negative RANTS about Stuart Scott, Michael Irvin, Scoop Jackson? Seriously, making low comments about the man’s (Stuart’s) eye should be an abomination… You have to be kidding!!!! I met Stuart during the Finals in Dallas and I will say he one of the nicest gentlemen I’ve met. Real cool guy, and maybe some of will change your tunes if you are so priviledged to be at the Finals to even meet him. The same with Stephen A.
The days of the ‘LILLY WHITE’ ESPN staff many of you are probably so longing for ARE OVER!!! A little more personality, and yes some soul was needed on this network if they hoped to capture their desired targeted demographics…and that includes the African American men AND women!

I’m not able to watch a full SC show. Matter of fact I hardly watch SC. To me every since Greg KIlborn was on;they(SC)went in the direction of these catch phrases. I hate it. The guys that are good they left or doing something else with ESPN.I really can not stand S.Scott!!!!!!!!! (Nuck-Nuck,Pookie & all that ebonics talk I hate. Dude!!!! You graduated from UNC.)

“Why? Because major media is owned by rich white guys. They want to push their neo-conservative agenda, and the easiest way to do that is expose the world to black people being idiots.”
Bwaahaha!!
Do you even know what a neoconservative is? The major media is owned by neoconservatives, LOL. I guess using that same “logic” the entire hip-hop industry is a front for the KKK. Who knew those mouth breathers were sooo brilliant?

ESPN has been screwed up for years. They fire Jason Whitlock, who’se a tremendous writer who actually expresses original, insightful and INDEPENDENT thougts, yet they somehow love bombastic buffoons like Lupica, Scoop, and Bayless. I miss the old espn that was for real sports fans, w/o this reality show/scream fest mentality that’s taken it over.

Yes, there is a lot about ESPN that is annoying, but when I think of the network I still remember the college football season opener two years ago when they broadcast the game and a LIVE behind the scenes program about the game. Seeing Rece Davis and other lesser known members of ESPN given a chance to show their stuff was phenomenal.
I’m glad Shapiro’s gone, even if that means watching more poker instead of “Teammates” or a lame made-for-TV movie or even Stump The Schwab.
ESPN needs to remember we watch SC and the other programs because we are obsessed with sports, not because we’re obsessed with ESPN.

I am a first time reader of this blog! I am looking at my jaw on the floor!! So much self righteousness! Yes. Espn has sold their networks soul to the devil. Yes. Its ridiculous black exploitation! No need for mentioning names. They know who they are and more importantly so does Espn! Who’s endorsing their huge paychecks. But certainly not all are being exploited! Is this any different than prime time tv networks, cable channels, etc.? From gays, pimps, bigots, prostitutes, criminals, etc. being glorified. Not to mention reality tv! Its heavily watch with recordbreaking ratings..The majority of viewers support the hypocrisy. So consider taking a real close look in the mirror and at your children and friends values, before such harsh critisim of indiviuals you dont’ know at all. “In the meantime don’t wacth that which insults your intelligence”. If your really intelligent.. Just a thought

Bayless makes a 750K….wow i wish i could make that much without much credibility and have to resort to hating on everyone just to get a rise….bayless is a hack…no more no less….scoop is a moron….white black green yellow….i don’t look at colors i look at what’s said and from what he’s said he’s an idiot and a hack that doesn’t have a grasp of the english language….espn got too powerful for their own good when no one else is there to compete lets the leader throw whatever crap they think the viewer will take….a funny thing though…i remember a couple years back when i was watching ‘dream job’…i know espn original programming sucks it was that or some other reality crap…their head of talent relations (al jafee?) said to two of the guys on there “this isn’t seinfeld, this is serious” the hypocracy stunk to holy hell just watch stu scott and scott van pelt….i’ve been watching final score on fsn just to avoid the crap on espn…scores and highlights are good….not all the lame humor when the pretentious anchors think you’re watching them….i just ranted enough….espn sold its soul…i dunno when but it did….however money talks bullshit walks

Stu Scott has always been terrible, MNF is now a joke with Mike Trico announcing, John Saunders should have never replaced Dick Schaap.
These guys just to name a few on ESPN are terrible. Stu, Mike and John do not have their own identity, they assume or at least try to assume others.
When ESPN first arrived on the scene, they had and still have great screen graphics, but the first announcers sucked. Years later, the graphics continue to be first class and the announcers continue to be terrible.
And Stu, Mike and John are the worst of the lot.

TOM JACKSON IS A UNCLE TOM… BOOMER IS OUTDATED CHRIS MORTENSEN IS A 80′S THROW BACK BUT THEY ALL BRING THAT BALANCE THAT IS NEEDED.. IF YA WANNA GET RID OF SOMEBODY HOW ABOUT JAMELE HILL OR BETTER YET JOE THEISEMAN

Just wondering what you all think of some of the horrible ESPN SportsCenter anchors. The obnoxious, unfunny John Anderson is No. 1 on the wretched list. I’ve sent several e-mails to ESPN calling for his firing, to no avail. The guy is so smug, it isn’t funny and his repeated put-downs and attempts at humor are pathetic.
Also can you believe this new Sage Steele skirt? She is clueless and seems destined to be fired.
Keep up the good work. I kind of stumbled onto your website this week but like it.
Thanks,
Dave Beck

First and foremost ESPN needs to work on Sportscenter, especially during the NFL season. There was a game last year between the ‘Skins and the ‘Jags, which went into overtime where Santana Moss eventually caught a touchdown pass to win the game. Heck of a game. It took ESPN’s Sportscenter 1 hour and 17 minutes to get to the highlight. I’m not kidding, to open the show they spent almost 25 minutes on TWO other games. It’ s just ridculous how pathetic that show has gotten. Two much talk and not enough highlights. The show has really gone down hill and I can barely watch it.

I can’t even listen to Cowherd. Mike and Mike are almost as bad. On the way to work I listen to Czaban (sic) on Fox Sports, who is at least tolerable. ESPN Radio is horrible. I love Patrick & Olberman, although not their politics, but the rest suck. As far as TV, get rid of 90% of them. Stuart Scott, Scoop, Rome, etc. are all bigmouths. Stephen A. is by far the worst though. What a piece of crap. Its’ like they made a loudmouth model of what a braodcaster should be, and all of these clones sprouted up.

What is up with all of the ESPN bashing… There is a reason they are the world wide leader in sports. I realize your all jealous of Colin Cowherd and his success, but don’t hate on the rest of ESPN too. It’s really kind of sad.
