Rooting against Nick Saban is good for the soul…I’ll be watching the Sugar Bowl
December 7th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Three very good games. I’ll be watching.
Any early line on the title game? FLA -3?
December 7th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
Reasons to Get Excited:
BCS - obvious
Sugar - The Utes get a chance to prove themselves against the sinister little nickies.
Rose - Kirk and Brent’s last game of the season. I mean, who couldn’t get excited about that?
Fiesta - rematch from the 2005 game. Seriously, has OSU had a real quality non-conference win in the past three seasons against a team not coached by Charlie Weiss?
Orange - meh, what else are you going to be doing the first night of 2009?

Spence is a big Ohio State fan (graduate of there as well?) and I’m a current student at Texas. I could see myself having fun here during the game.
And anyone who has the chance to beat Oklahoma on a National Stage, is cool in my book.
December 7th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
I’ll watch them all. What’s the alternative? All my shows are disappearing for more reality crap.
December 7th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
Cincy-V. Tech is very blah, and I’m really pretty burnt out on Texas-Ohio State, but the other three games are all definite must sees for this football fan.
December 7th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
Is Sprint CEO Dan Hesse now the official spokesman for the NFL?
December 7th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
I’m pretty sure tOSU beat Texas in Austin 3 years ago. That’s a decent non-conference victory.
December 7th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
Go Bucks.
Suck it, clown.
December 7th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
i forgot about that 06 game. my b.
December 7th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
Some dude won a million bucks by picking 25 straight games correctly in an espn.com contest
December 7th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
I am a VT grad but fuck it. VT v Cincy is another opportunity to watch Beamer take one to the face like a champ.
December 7th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Homer Bailey for Jermaine Dye?

Didn’t VY beat Troy Smith 3 years ago? I’m sure these teams split their two year series…
December 7th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
That was the same thing i was gonna use my time machine for.
December 7th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
oklahoma opened at 1.5 and went to -3
December 7th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
That’s a bad trade, river. Fuck.
December 7th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Pretty sure VY won in ‘05. I think that was when Zwick?? and smith were still alternating at QB.
OSU won in ‘06 on their way to being beat down by the Gators.
December 7th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
oklahoma opened at 1.5 and went to -3
That was fast. I would have put up the house at -1.5, but I was at the kid’s Christmas program. Alas, I think -3 is still safe.

could still move more.
i like meyer > stoops, so i’ll take the gators.
December 7th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
I don’t know about that. Dye can hit, that’s for sure. If Dusty somehow gets over the “right field is for respected veterans” rule of thumb and hide him in left, it should be ok. If nothing else this should get Phillips back in the 6th spot where he belongs. Bruce, Dye, Votto 3-4-5 could be really good.
December 7th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Dye for Bailey = crap for crap. Good job by the Sox getting worse though. Thanks, fellas.
December 7th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
i like meyer > stoops, so i’ll take the gators. TBL
Sounds like a wager! I’ll bet my 100 shares of Wamu stock.
December 7th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
We’ll see, river. Dye’s a fine hitter, but overpaid. If we get a couple draft picks when he leaves, it might work out ok.
December 7th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
White Sox just freed up $11.5 million. Maybe they’ll go after Furcal. I like it from their end.
December 7th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
I won’t mind watching any of those games. Even the orange bowl has an opportunity to be a decent game.
The real shitfest is the new year’s day games, as already detailed here by someone.
December 7th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
The only good non BCS game is Oklahoma State v. Oregon.

I haven’t even looked at the New Year’s line-up yet, but College Football’s greatest day died about 5 or 6 years ago. I can only imagine the crap they have for the minimal amount of games that are played on 1/1 this year.
December 7th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
hawks/wings at wrigley will be on…
December 7th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
I’m glad the decided to put VT and Cincy together so there is only 1 excruciatingly awful game instead of 2
December 7th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
@KC
agreed.
Once upon a time, in the near past, my extended family would goto my uncle’s house on New Years, and I would sit there and watch 4-5 games while watching my uncles and great uncles hover over their sheets seeing who was going to win the pool. Now…the party’s at my dad’s house and football is really, really low on the totem pole. I’ll actually spend more time outside sipping on a beer with my dad watching the pig cook than watching the games. And I will definitely enjoy watching the pig cook more.
December 7th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
I’ll go Gators too, the only reason being that Oklahoma hasn’t faced one defense this year with the speed of Florida. I think they will be a little surprised how quick the Gator D is. Also I don’t see how Oklahoma can stop Florida at all.
Also Bob Stoops is coaching.
December 7th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
Also Bob Stoops is coaching.
Yeah, this is something I’m still trying to get my head wrapped around. I think this is the year Bobby gets his “Big Game Bob” back. Hell, this game is still three months away. Plenty of time to overanalyze the game.

One of my friends is a big supporter of the bowls going back to the old version. No BCS, Bowl Alliance, whatever. Just let the traditional bowl tie-ins stay. One of his defending rationals was that New Year’s Day would mean something again to the fans. All the games are basically exhibitions anyway, so play them out. The BCS has not solved any of the controvery it was supposed to. I hate to defend Texas, but they have a legit reason to be pissed. Same with USC (sort of). Under the current rules, Ou and Florida are in, and that’s how it should be since that is the rule. But, this did not solve anything regarding who should be playing for the mythical NC. In short, I’m not sure going back to the old way is the answer, but if it did, New Year’s Day would have more football because it would allow other networks to bid for games.
The reality of it is that ESPN (not to bash on them) is the reason. They are smart enough to know that it is stupid to have 3 or 4 bowl games going at the same time. Advertisement dollars are tied to viewers eyes and it makes sense to spread games across the bowl season than to tie a bunch up on one day. That’s why ESPN bought almost all the bowls. Smart move in a business sense. Sucky for a fan that likes switching between games hungover on New Year’s Day.
December 7th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
new years day and the fourth of july are my christmas. i always go to the outback bowl — nothing like cracking open your first beer at 8:30 a.m. on jan. 1 — then get home and watch football all day.
hey, it’s college football. save for two or three games, this is the last full day of college football for eight too long months.
i’d rather see texas play bama. but other than that i don’t have a problem with the bcs games. the orange bowl is kinda blah, but what are you going to do, those conferences suck. at least it’s two mediocre teams playing each other which should be competitive.
for the first time in years i’m geeked for the rose bowl. i’d laugh my arse off if joepa and penn state beat usc in their own house. texas and ohio state will be OK. bama should crush utah. still think utah-ohio state and texas-bama would be better games.
December 7th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
that’s grossly inaccurate. usc and texas — one of the grestest games in recent history — never would have played if they played under the old system. and that same year penn state and florida state (which went to triple overtime) never would have played under the old system.
also when usc beat oklahoma… when lsu beat oklahoma… and this year when florida plays oklahoma, those bcs title games never would have taken place under the old system.
December 7th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
oh, forgot about ohio state and miami. overtime classic. never would have happened under the old rules. i just don’t see how the old bowl system was better. if anything i could argue it was much worse. the old system damned near every year there were two or three undefeated teams after jan. 1.
December 7th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
i’d laugh my arse off if joepa and penn state beat usc in their own house. Jimmy
Same here.
re: Second post
I don’t want to get into a BCS good/bad arguement. That wasn’t my point. I was steering it towards why New Year’s games have gone by the wayside. However, you listed a few great games as examples of why the BCS is good, but you neglected all the totally shitty games it created. Not to mention that great games could have been created under an older system (or not). Just throwing thoughts out there. Your examples are spot on. I just don’t believe they invalidate the alternative.
Also, you did not mention Boise v OU. That would have never ever in a hundred million years happened under the old system. One of the best games and endings I’ve seen.
December 7th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
You mean the year that there was a split championship?
I was going to say basically exactly that. It’s impossible to say that the BCS games that have been created are any better or worse than the games that would have been played anyway.
December 7th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
There are some nice games this year. The Boise State-TCU game should be a decent watch and I think Michigan State could pull an upset over a very apathetic UGA team. Moreno and Stafford will have both feet out of the door to the NFL and UGA will be uber-dissapointed to play in a non-BCS bowl. One thing that is so good about bowl games is that it gives the teams an extra month of practice to get the young guys some reps. There are, however, some terrible games (as usual) which is something that needs to end. One good thing about this shitty economy is that hopefully some awful bowl games will fold.
December 7th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
forgot about that one. good call.
December 7th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
I’m sorry, Georgia Michigan State is not a good game. Neither team beat anybody all year, just coasted through soft schedules to good records, then got blown out when they did play good teams.
December 8th, 2008 at 12:03 am
I laugh out loud at those that thought I was blowing smoke regarding an obvious advantage for a bowl game taking Ohio State over Boise State. I’m not saying that’s necessarily the right way to go (OSU has no real impressive wins to speak of this year, but either does BSU - who’s SOS is one of the worst in all of college football).
Anyone still want to make fun of me for “pulling shit out of my ass?” OSU in a BCS games = satisfied BCS execs.

Ball State and Tulsa will feature a ton of Offense. Plus both teams are coming of TERRIBLE performances in Conference Title games and should have an edge to them.
December 8th, 2008 at 7:46 am
Did anyone really think they weren’t going to make a BCS bowl?
Doesn’t mean they deserve it.
December 8th, 2008 at 10:48 am
Nobody has mentioned Ole Miss-Texas Tech…I think that will be a game with a lot of offense as well.
