Time for Obama to Drop the Hammer on the Joke of a BCS
1-liner, College Football December 8th. 2008, 11:45amObama, Teddy Roosevelt and the BCS: Best column we’ve read in quite some time from Bill Rhoden of the Times. “Obama should summon a group of college presidents, conference commissioners and bowl representatives to the White House and deliver an ultimatum: come up with a comprehensive playoff system, or risk losing the bogus tax-exempt status they have enjoyed for so long.” Don’t laugh – Teddy Roosevelt did it in 1905 and it saved the game, according to Rhoden. Right after the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor and Lincoln declared victory after the War of 1812.

can he focus on something else first, like the economy and foreign affairs?

As if Obama is sitting in an office right now saying, “damn, the economy is bad but let’s discuss college football first.” Obama will have at least 4 and maybe 8 years to do this and when does the contract end after ESPN’s big purchase? 2016 I believe..the same year the Obama would leave office if elected to a 2nd term. I don’t want him focusing on this now but at the end of a 2nd term when he is a lame duck? Hell yes I would support it.

Teddy Roosevelt made changes in order to protect the people playing the game from potential life ending injuries. That was a worthwhile way to spend his time in office.
Changing the BCS so that Texas can’t bitch and complain about being “shafted” by the system? Not as worthwhile.

Image the death toll if Miami and Florida State had been major players in 1905.

I love articles that talk about what Obama should do 8 years from now, if that’s what you’re hinting Rhoden is talking about.

It’s just a fluff piece on some comment Obama made during “60 Minutes”. Non-story.

While I hope for a playoff system, how is anyone (even the President) going to circumvent the legally-binding, agreed-to-by-all-parties mega-contract the BCS schools have signed with ESPN? Is he going to have the Supreme Court declare it unconstitutional? Will he ask Congress to pass legislation banning it?
We’re stuck with the BCS as is for the immediate future.

I heard this Obama-playoff thing during the campaign and thought he was just joking–can’t believe the conversation is still going. Let it go already. Unless stadiums go dark and TV ratings plummet because fans are so disgusted, it’s just not going to happen.

Somehow TR was able to focus on this while simultaneously busting up monopolies, creating the modern Federal Civil Service by eliminating the spoils system, and opening up national parks.

i wasn’t knocking obama… just saying that these guys are fishing for attention and are making a non story a story for a President-elect that has way too much on his plate right now to worry about college football..

sick burn brah. Imagine if Virginia Tech won a National Championship

I just like how Obama says we need an 8 team playoff because I said so. He just grabs a random number that he thinks is right, and wants to mandate that. Newsflash Obama, 8 teams won’t work.

Don’t laugh – FDR did it in 1905 and it saved the game.
Biden told Obama about it, he watched the speech on TV
btw, Obama is NOT going to fix the BCS as one of his first acts as President. He has much more pressing affairs to address, like buying a puppy

Maybe he should be more focused on the economy and our national defense than getting involved with college football.
If Obama wants to get involved with colleges it should be to actually bring down their tuitions and make it more affordable. But hey I guess complaining about gas prices is alright when bullsh*t colleges charge 40 grand a yr.
