Seth Davis: College Hoops Regular Season Carries More Weight Than College Football’s
1-liner, College Basketball, College Football, Media Gossip/Musings December 10th. 2008, 3:30pmCollege Hoops vs. College Football: Seth Davis is correct. Because there’s no college football playoff, the regular season actually means less. In addition, Seth Davis mentions Artie Lange, and says something we said in the preseason: “You need a really, really good point guard to get to the Final Four, and the reality is, Louisville doesn’t have one.” (SI)

Then why won’t I watch one second of college basketball until march?

like seth but don’t agree. you can coast halfway a quarter if not a third of the way through a season and still make the big dance in hoops.
you lose one game in football (just ask joepa, mack brown, carroll) and you are screwed.
i used to be hardcore college hoops but about the time every two-bit high school kid started jumping to the nba and football had at least no. 1 vs. no. 2 (which, prior to the late-1990s wasn’t as sure thing), i gradually began losing interesting in college hoops and began gaining interest in college football.
now, i’m hardcore football and really only start getting into college hoops after the bcs title bowl. i know, it’s sad.

the real question is:
How many people bet regularly on college football regular season games and how many bet on college basketball regular season games?
follow the money…

Andy Katz > Seth Davis

College football’s regular season may be more exciting, but it is not a playoff. If it was, Florida and Oklahoma would have been eliminated after losing to Mississippi and Texas.
BTW, college basketball’s regular season affects it in a great way. It plays into seeding the bracket. The difference between being a 2-seed and a 5-seed can be the difference between a Final Four spot or going home by the Sweet 16.

Big 10 and SEC homer Stewie Mandel talks about this in his mailbag:

college football, or any form of football > college basketball, or any form of basketball
Why are we listening to football commentary from a college basketball writer? This is worse than when Mike & Mike bring Dickie V on their show to opine about the NFL. Stick to your own wheelhouse, Davis.

i’ll tell ya one thing: if you take the playoff issue to its absurd level (which is what john wooden i believe wants to do as well as some supposed intelligent men) and enable every d-1 team to get into the big dance, then they will have effectively destroyed the golden goose.
at that point, it will be ridiculous and few will watch the first week of the big dance.
if/when that happens, then seth can try to rerun his regular season argument again.

Chick-Fil-A Bowl > Whatever that new postseason tournament that’s not the NIT is called
December 10th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Well the difference between losing a game and not losing a game (and when you lose a game) is the difference between a National Title shot and the Holiday Bowl.

jimmy, that was his point. once penn state lost, its games essentially were meaningless.
December 10th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
not true until last week.
but that also reinforces my point: a college hoops team does not need to play at a high level to get a championship until march. you lose five or eight games? eh. so what?
in college football there is a very narrow margin of error.

let me be honest: there is no sporting event — not the super bowl; not the world series; not the stanley cup; not the bcs title game — that matches march madness.

@ BFFredo
if you’re one of the 5 seeds, it’s virtually assured that one of you is losing in the first round

In college basketball you don’t have to win a single regular season game and you can play in the tournament (unless you’re in the Ivy League). Seth Davis is an idiot.
December 10th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
I love college basketball, but I think it’s really absurd to compare the college football regular season to the basketball regular season. The number of games each sport plays during their regular season makes this stupid argument. That being said, there is nothing more exciting in all of sports than March Madness.
December 10th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
March Madness is incredible for four days. After that, 99% of the cinderellas are gone and we’re back to real college basketball.

You need a really, really good point guard to get to the Final Four,
This guy never saw LSU play in 2006. I don’t think they had a legitimate Division I point guard on the roster.
