Syracuse Judicial Hearing Board Comes Down Hard on Girl-Punching Guard Eric Devendorf
Campus Crime, College Basketball December 11th. 2008, 1:15pm
Our fascination with the ‘Cuse began in the ’80s, when the Big East was on TV frequently and we liked to pretend we were Sherman Douglas while running the fast break (he was a bit more flashy than Georgetown’s Michael Jackson). Billy Owens losing to Richmond was a colossal letdown. The high point came during the 1996 title run, which ended in a loss to Kentucky, but was so memorable that we can still fondly remember Al McGuire dancing with the team after beating Kansas in Denver, as well as John Wallace’s Herculean performance against Georgia in a sweet overtime victory.
In recent years, though, our interest in the program has waned. Other than G-Mac’s legendary senior season and beating Kansas for the title, positive memories have been scant. Which brings us to the transgression of tatted-up Syracuse guard Eric Devendorf (a legend in Bay City, Michigan!). He’s been suspended from school for the year (appeal pending) for allegedly punching a female student.
SU junior Kimberly Smith said that Devendorf hit her in the lower jaw Nov. 1. Devendorf’s lawyer has said the player was defending himself from a “woman who seconds before had almost run him over with her car.” … “He (Devendorf’s lawyer) said the board ignored the fact that Kim Smith, the 20-year old student who says Devendorf punched her in the face, was drinking at a frat party. Sullivan also said Smith broke a New York State law by driving after consuming alcohol. He added that according to the Syracuse city police report Smith did not appear to have any signs of a fight on her body. He also said that Smith did not have a single witness who could verify her story. He was also very disappointed that the school overlooked the fact that Smith used racially insensitive language during the argument, language that Sullivan said goes against the University’s message of tolerance.”
Jim Boeheim, who has stumbled recruiting over the last few years, has decided to rule with an iron fist.
“The process is ongoing, and it is not appropriate to comment until the process is concluded,” basketball coach Jim Boeheim said in a statement released by the university’s office of athletic communications.
Everything looked promising for the ‘Cuse after beating Florida and Kansas a couple weeks back, but the loss of Devendorf would be crushing. That’d force Andy Rautins into the starting lineup, and leave the bench with two freshman and a sophomore who isn’t used to heavy minutes. The real hope is for next year - there are only two seniors, neither of which is a factor - but that would only be the cause if Harris, Flynn and Onuaku pass on the pros.

Said it last night and I’ll say it again, every time I see a picture of Devendorf I automatically think cockbag. He needs to work on that.
December 11th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Harris and Onuaku going pro? Thats lughable. Onuaku doesn’t have any sort of game outside of 7 feet and he’s only 6′9.
Having had friends that have dealt with SU judicial review it’s an absolute mess. there’s no evidence requirement that needs to be met and they can rule however they want irregardless of the law. The new reports coming out today are that Devendorf didn’t hit her he just put his hand on her face. Either way he’s an epic douche for getting himself involved in this when he was already on probation.
Secondly, whats Boeheim supposed to do? suspend him for something he hasn’t been convicted of? Duke Lacrosse I’m looking in your direction.

sounds like the kid has a good lawyer

TBL- how has Boeheim stumbled recuiting? He got Flynn and Harris, Devendorf, McNamara, Donte Greene, Carmelo, Hakim Warrick all in the last 5 years. And the class of Roberts, Watkins, nichols was a top 10 class coming out of high school.
December 11th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
no Preston Shumpert reference? No Lucky Lucious Jackson? Billy Owens?
G Mac was my boy. one of my fave Cuse players of all time
i never liked Eric from day 1

Sounds like the girl is more at fault than him, by just reading all of that. That being said, after seeing this dude play a few times, he seems like an epic cockface.
December 11th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Sounds like Davendorf’s lawyer knows his shit. But I don’t think this situation would be so tenuous if it wasn’t for Davendorf’s honkey-douchebag history.
December 11th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Couple of thoughts, TBL — First, on Boeheim. As a college coach, as soon as you stop standing behind your players you’re going to be in trouble. As long as Devendorf has a reasonable appeals process, of course Boeheim is going to let that play out.
I’d also disagree with the notion that Boeheim has had trouble recruiting in recent years. You don’t land a ‘Melo every season, and Syracuse isn’t Duke or UNC.
Donte’ Green, Scoop Jardine, Flynn, Harris — all highly recruited. Mookie Jones, largely relegated to the bench this season, a highly ranked frosh.
December 11th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
What, did she call him ‘honkie’?
December 11th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
How is that any different than Carlos Boozer or Elton Brand in college? Guys who’s game is pretty close to his?
That article TBL links to has the press release from the Judicial Board — they use the phrase “alarmed and annoyed”. That is the legal requirement for harrassment, so they did find him in violation of the law.

I was hoping for Lawrence Moten.
December 11th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
shit. Owens is in the post. No Otis Hill?
December 11th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Boeheim hasn’t struggled in recruiting - he’s struggled to keep guys healthy (Devo and Rautins last year) or get them to stay in the program (greene going pro this year).
As far as Devendorf goes, he should have never been in that situation to begin with. The team has been running wild for the last two years - sexual assault allegations, stolen meal cards, etc…
December 11th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Agreed.
December 11th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Sherman Douglas was not flashy. Pearl Washington was flashy.
December 11th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
How dare you.
I owned the “Boeheim on Basketball” VHS when I was a kid, Sherm played a prominent role in teaching me the fundamentals.

If Melo woul have staye and Edelin had played, the Syracuse recruiting looks a lot better. Similar the problem That Matta has had, new teams almost every year. Paul Harris was a disappointment as a frosh (people were thinking he would have the impact that Melo had), but you can see that the kid can play now.
I’ve questioned Boeheim’s steadfast refusal to go man-to-man over the years. It’s like Cheney at Temple with his matchup zone… there’s a reason nobody else plays these defenses 100% of the time.. I’m not saying zones don’t work, but to play them exclusively is a mistake (in my not-so-humble) opinion.
December 11th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Please tell me you’re not serious. Brand and Boozer were athletic big men in college that could occasionally knock down a face up jumper. In the two years I’ve seen Onuaku ( every SU game) he hasn’t ATTEMPTED a shot facing the basket from outside 5 feet. I love Arinze and he’s a huge part of this team but he is in no way ready for the NBA. Anyone that thinks he is, is delusional at best.
December 11th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
big fan of the 2-3 zone
December 11th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
It’s dying a slow death. Very few high school teams utilize it as a primary defense anymore. Everyone goes with the aggressive-borderline tackling man-to-man and worry about fouls later. If zone is played, it’s usually 1-3-1 or some other form of half-court trap.
December 11th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
I love me some Roosevelt Bouie and Louis Orr, thank you very much
December 11th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Not saying he’s a lottery pick or as polished as Brand or Boozer — just wanted to point out that his being 6′9″ does not preclude him from being a good NBA player at the 5-spot.
And not every underclassmen enters the NBA because they are projected in the lottery. It’s a reasonable thing to consider with Onuaku, even if you can make a very good argument that he should stay in school.
December 11th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
I hope he has a nice trip back to 8 Mile.
It’s never acceptable to hit a woman, but to do so when you’re an athlete and already on probation is idiotic.
Boeheim goes down a notch in my book for fighting for him to play during the appeal.
December 11th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Rony Seikaly snags the best poon. He holds a distinct advantage with his aggressive chest hair.
December 11th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Losing Devendorf would hardly be “crushing”; the team played most of last year without and should have made the tournament. And since when does Jim Boeheim talk to the press?
December 11th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Completely disagree. He’s a playmaker in every sense of the word. When he’s on, the Cuse are tough to beat. Keep in mind I despise the guy.
December 11th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
As I said before, when you’re the coach, you stand behind your players. This isn’t some incident where he got caught red-handed, it’s a he-said/she-said case and there is a court case pending.
This team looked like it might be able to challenge for one of those top-four spots in the Big East. I’m not sure that’s possible without Devendorf.
Enjoy
December 11th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
Totally agree. Now without him, Flynn’s minutes go from 30-31 to about 37-38. Thats a huge difference. Also they lose a 3 point threat and a slasher.
December 11th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
a bit tied up now, but will talk about recruiting more later. he’s gotten highly-ranked players … but several of them have been misses. since melo left, 3 ncaa apps, 2 NIT apps. when does that happen?
December 11th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Eh, these girls get drunk then fall on a dick and cry foul. I’m over it.

a little easier.
Best part is Knight not calling a time out after the free throws

@mama — 1987 was a long time ago, hard to believe a program as “great” as IU’s hasn’t won a championship in 21 years. Things look pretty awesome this season, too.
That IU/UK game should be a real battle.
December 11th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
@cursedcleveland: I don’t remember what game it was (I think Kansas), but it was on TV and the ‘Cuse went to a man D in the second half and it helped them win.
December 11th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
They have been playing much more man-to-man this season than any season previous.
December 11th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Well, I should say any season in this decade. With Devendorf off the team that will likely change. Rautins can not guard anyone. It’s a big deal.
December 11th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
I think you mean Devendorf cant’ guard anyone. Rautins is a very good defender in the zone and average in man. Devendorf is a statue on defense.
December 11th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
rs27 — I gotta disagree with you, man. Neither of them is a great defender, but Devendorf has the athleticism and quickness to stay with most off-guards.
You can’t hide Rautins in man. They have to play zone with him in there unless the guy he’s guarding is a complete black hole offensively. Even then, the opponent will try and force him to switch off.
We’ll see what Boeheim does. My guess is he’ll at least try and stick with some man initially, but I bet by the end of the year they are playing almost exclusively zone again (assuming Devendorf is done).
