Another job well done, George. Fleecing the shit out of another hopeless team with no shot at the postseason. Highway robbery. Because Phillies owners Bill Giles and David Montgomery aren’t printing postseason tickets this year, they elected to dump salary in exchange for “prospects,” which in turns means a few more millions in their pockets.

It didn’t take long for a consensus to be reached in this one: The Yankees get a star outfielder in lefty Bobby Abreu, and a more-than-serviceable 4th starter in Cory Lidle, for a used Kleenex, a warm cup of urine, and a stick of deodorant to be named later. Obviously, none of those guys are ready to contribute this year (and probably not next year, either).

This competitive imbalance in baseball vexes us greatly. We’re all for a salary cap in baseball, but sadly, that’s not happening. Not when owners can simply shed payroll and make their millions. But because of the system, can you blame businessmen from wanting to maximize profits?
