It’s Official: The Whitlock-ESPN Marriage Is No More
Uncategorized September 26th. 2006, 2:10pm
So we’re the sports blog that got Jason Whitlock fired from ESPN. This is a fact we are not proud of. If you’re a first-timer to the site, here is our Q&A with him last week that started the shitstorm.
As we’ve stated before, Whitlock was a joy to watch on the network when filling in on PTI or Jim Rome, and we enjoyed his sparring with the panelists on The Sports Reporters. Along with Bill Simmons, Whitlock was one of the few reasons we bothered visiting ESPN.com’s dying-a-slow-death Page 2.
We kind of got the impression the overweight lova was in trouble when a new minority face turned up on The Sports Reporters Sunday, and then on Monday, one of our moles in Bristol sent us this email:
i agreed with most of what he wrote. but it was far too vicious … plus, he’s done at ESPN on air now I’m guessing, they don’t tolerate that stuff.
If you read some of the comments here and here, you get the sense that ESPN.com may miss Whitlock more than he misses ESPN.com (paycheck notwithstanding). We’re eagerly awaiting his initial column at AOL Sports.
When we began interviewing sports journalists last month, the intention was for us to pull back the curtain and have writers reveal some of the cool, behind-the-scenes shit that readers aren’t privy to. TJ Simers of the Los Angeles Times gave us some of that. Tomorrow, we will post an interview with a writer from Sports Illustrated.com that you hopefully will enjoy. Now if Jay Mariotti would only return our blasted emails …
Independent thought more important than working for ESPN (McClatchy Newspapers)

Hispanics are not a minorty. Have you checked the population growth. We do not bow down to the white man. We may agree with him on Bonds, but that is about it.

What a shock…Jason Whitlock implodes once again. He has a history of doing this — check out why he “left” 2 different radio stations in Kansas City. His knowledge of sports and the depth of his writing is so limited, and he gets away with it by being “controversial.” He is so overrated it is unbelieveable. His mission in life is to call attention to himself (by playing the race card generally), and the people in Kansas City knew his firing at ESPN was inevitable. Fortunately, his national platform on ESPN has come tumbling down we all are spared listening to him for now. However, for those of us living in Kansas City, we continue having to endure him in print until he self destructs again and the Kansas City Star realizes what a number of his previous employers have already concluded that he is just not worth the trouble…and life can go on without the rantings ofJason Whitlock.

I agree with a lot of what JW has to say but he has ZERO tact when it comes to explaining a lot of his positions.
JW could have left ESPN giving off the same basic impression he did but unfortunately he resorted to ad hominem attacks which just make me disregard any argument.

Guys,
You guys are usually pretty on top of things but Whitlock is probably one of the worst sports columnists America. He’s boring on PTI despite his cheap attempts to be funny, he’s always wrong with his predictions and he has somehow convinced himself he was a star athlete because he played at Ball State.
Every week he picks on Ohio State or Cincinnati in some sort of capacity, it’s pathetic and both entities make him look like a fool each and every week. I’m curious, what makes him so interesting? He doesn’t really seem to even know anything about sports. This is a guy that, if you watch PTI, didn’t even know who Lleyton Hewitt was but tried to have a take on a grand slam tennis tourney. He’s a fraud and he knows it. You should be ashamed of yourselves for liking him!

Well, all I can say is you made a wise decision firing this clown. I am born and raised in New Orleans and was APPAULED at his comments about my city and my team. I’m sure he is bitter due to his obvious obesity and lack of personality. I would rather not stoop to his level, so I won’t. Fact is, he was about as much as a journalist as he was an athlete. A JOKE!

Well, whatever. I find Whitlock to be a breath of fresh air, no-nonsense and pretty damned smart.
Dunno where these commentators are coming from, Lead.
