Actually, seeing the opposite form should make us realize that the initial expression, “man up,” is itself chauvinist and implies there is a particular way of behaving that is appropriate for men, and that men shouldn’t act like “girls.”

And to the ESPN-defending commenters . . . just because ESPN has the best sports content on TV and radio does not mean that they aren’t filthy, cross-promoting whores. And if you actually read the other posts on this blog today, you would see that the night in the NBA was covered, and quite well.

Comedian Bill Burr has a great bit about “the podium.” How whenever sportscasters start to say something dumb – racist, sexist, gayist (is that a word?) – everyone else just backs away and out comes the podium where the offender apologizes and loses their job. I almost feel bad for Greenberg. He tries so hard to act like a guy who is trying to fit in and happily (appears so anyway) fills the role of butt of jokes for Golic and every guest. I can just imagine him saying it and being able to hear the air getting sucked out of the room. I’m sure he knew he was making a mistake as soon as it came out of his mouth and was desperately trying to figure out how to fix it.

I’ve got to say that I personally enjoy most of the ESPN stuff on this site, although this might be stretching things a little. There are a lot of sites I can check out for commentary on last night’s NBA games, but some of the inside ESPN stuff you guys get makes this site stand out.

I think way more is being read into this than it needs. He was simply just saying the opposite of each word. man up woman down. Doesn’t mean anything. ESPN is generally very bad and has enough targets on it that things don’t need to get invented.

Was listening on my way to work as well and he actually said Women Up first then changed it to Woman Down. Basically, he most likely was kicking himself after the dumb statement. It really was one of those statements that no good can come out of.

Wow, I just wasted my time reading this article. This is not news. I wish that bloggers would stop trying to find the mistakes in EVERYTHING ESPN does. They dont royally fuck up everyday, but every sports blog I read makes it seem that way. You know there were about 15 basketball games on last night, right? Maybe you could find some stories there.
