Not That There’s Anything Wrong With That
NBA February 6th. 2007, 3:07pm
In the macho world of professional sports, admitting you are a gay athlete is an absolute no-no. The alpha males in the locker room – the Jeremy Shockeys of the world – just wouldn’t stand for showering alongside someone who didn’t live for scooping up sexy female groupies by the handful at the hotel bar following the game.
What most athletes do is remain in the closet until after retiring from sports. Which is what a former NBA player is about to do. Sports on My Mind, an insightful, underrated blog, has done the sleuthing, and guesses the player might just be former Penn State star John Amaechi. The 6-foot-10 center from across the pond was a mediocre NBA backup center for five seasons.
We posted this story over at the NBA Fanhouse late last night and one anonymous poster responded: “This is 100% true. It is widely known in Utah that he was part of the gay community, but just had not come out with it. He has been known to have parties with his gay friends, and the pictures from these parties have been seen by many people.”

There is nothing wrong with that, but it will be quite sometime before being an openly gay athlete in team sports will be accepted fully in the media and on the teams themselves.
