John Amaechi-is-Gay Reaction: ‘Gayness’ and ‘Sick Perverted Stuff’
Former Athletes, Kind of Gay, NBA February 9th. 2007, 3:23pmWe brought you the news early Tuesday that former Utah Jazz reserve center John Amaechi was coming out of the closet. On Wednesday, he did.
Players are getting grilled more about Amaechi’s announcement than they are about All-Star weekend in Vegas (debauchery is only eight days away!). And predictably, with the questioning comes boneheaded answers clearly lacking in judgment. The two best (worst?) emit from Philadelphia.
Shavlik Randolph: “As long as you don’t bring your gayness on me I’m fine. As far as business-wise, I’m sure I could play with him. But I think it would create a little awkwardness in the locker room.”
Steven Hunter: “For real? He’s gay for real? “Nowadays it’s proven that people can live double lives. I watch a lot of TV, so I see a lot of sick perverted stuff about married men running around with gay guys and all types of foolishness.”
Ignorant? Funny? Homophobic? Or just two young scrubs in this league who aren’t well-versed in speaking with the media? There’s always the chance they were drunk.
Either way, we’d be shocked if there wasn’t some kind of apology issued in the coming days. We fully expect the team bus to be full of this kind of sophomoric, alpha-male humor, but projecting it out to the masses? Not in 2007.
