Most Fun Sporting Event to Gamble on: NCAA Tournament

Anyone already fatigued by the NCAA tournament? Shit, the brackets came out less than 24 hours ago, and you can’t click on a website or go into Safeway without getting bombarded with questions about Georgetown’s defense, Dick Vitale’s eye, or the potential Illinois-Southern llinois matchup.
A friend just got back from the VD clinic, where he was told to pull his pants down and to turn his head and cough. Then came the question: ’so, are Calipari’s Tigers for real this year?’
We just filled out our first bracket. First of at least 15. Think it had Florida, Georgetown, Ohio State, and UCLA in the Final Four. No money on the line, so didn’t put too much thought into it. Speaking of money … anybody see the lines yet? Watching the games Thursday and Friday with brackets in hand is one thing; watching them with money on the line is an entirely different animal.
A couple to chew on:
* North Carolina -26 vs. Eastern Kentucky. Hate high spreads. Avoid them like the ocean. Too dangerous.
* Duke -6.5 vs. VCU. Some thing VCU could pull this off … actually like Duke to easily cover.
* Vandy -3.5 vs. George Washington. Vandy’s non-conf schedule was a joke, the only quality road win was at Kentucky. Take GW to win.
* Washington St. -6.5 vs. Oral Roberts. We leapt off the bandwagon and we’re taking Oral Roberts here.
* Wisconsin -13 vs. somebody. Just because it struggled down the stretch, don’t be fooled. With that defense? Badgers by 20.

How about Southern Illinois -7 vs. Holy Cross? That’s an awfully big line for a game between the 63rd- and 64th-highest scoring teams in the tournament, not to mention that HC under Ralph Willard lost by 4 (to #2 seed Kentucky), 11 (to #1 seed Kansas, in a game HC led with under 8 minutes to go), and 4 (to #3 seed Marquette). Throw in the fact that HC and Bucknell have been pretty similar teams the last several years, and Bucknell knocked off Kansas in ‘05 and Arkansas in ‘06 in the tournament.

oral roberts over WSU is a trendy pick, and i know that the cougs haven’t been great lately, but the way they frustrate teams, i thing wazzu can win a few games. then again, no experience. that could backfire. still, i like wsu.

Have you seen VCU play this year, Big Lead? They’re exactly the kind of quick, athletic team Duke has had trouble stopping all season long. Good luck getting to the baseline before Eric Maynor turns it. And at plus-7, which was the line in LV today, an easy choice to cover. Also: Love USC giving only 1-1/2 to Arkansas, and Arizona to cover the 2-1/2 against Purdue.
