Finally, a Seminal Moment: Duke Falls to VCU, 79-77
Uncategorized March 16th. 2007, 1:39am
This probably didn’t sink any brackets, considering Duke was a susceptible No. 6 seed to begin with, but VCU’s incredible sophomore point guard, Eric Maynor, drilled a foul-line jumper with 1.8 seconds left as the Rams stunned Duke, 79-77.
Maynor was unstoppable down the stretch, driving at will against Duke’s highly-acclaimed Greg Paulus, and absolutely dominating. Not that it matters, but we lost a lot of money on this one.
The line of the game was delivered by Kevin Harlan. Both teams were getting testy in the second half. At least four players drew blood during the contest. At one point, the camera focused on Paulus, and Harlan said, ‘Paulus … he’s reached his banging quota tonight.’
We tend to get juvenile around tourney time – blame it on the excitement.

How far’d you have Duke going?
It killed three of our parlays for the night. After the favorites covered in the first eight games, we decided to go heavy on Duke and Pittsburgh. Bad idea.

I’ve never been happier to see one of my sweet 16 picks lose in the first round.

Maynor has oversized onions. Did you see how he calmly took the ball up the court on the last play & waved off all his teammates knowing he could abuse Paulus or Scheyer. I actually thought he was taking way too much time bringing the ball up, but he knew exactly what he was doing. He sort of resembles Chauncey in the way he looks & moves, but has the same body as GP & seems to defend like him. If he can work on his jumper, he could make a case for 1st rounder. It’s weird, Paulus’ stats were pretty good, but to me, he seemed to be totally overwhelmed by the VCU pressure & athleticism.
Wait a second, Big Lead you didn’t pick VCU? I would been sure you would have picked Duke to lose. You been right on the money all year on Duke being overrated.

No, TBL, you’re not even close deeming that the line of the night.
During the Ohio State game, whoever was doing color with Gus Johnson was talking about Thad Matta.
Guy: You know what Hoopston’s (Matta’s HS) nickname is, dontcha?
Gus: Ha, ha, ha. No!
Guy: The Cornjerkers
Gus: Ha, ha, ha. Oh, yeah?
Guy: Yeah, you see, you take the ears and YOU JERK OFF THE CORN.
If only I TIVO’ed it. It was the best moment of the tournament so far.

Maynor had some sam cassell like onions tonight, I halfway expected him to trot down the sideline mimicking his tossers like cassell did back when cassell helped get minni past the second round

JSF – my thoughts exactly.

Wasn’t Maynor the guy who personally stomped on George Mason in the last 2 minutes of the CAA final too? Quite a week for that kid, if so.

Yup, Maynor is the one who stomped George Mason.
Did Gus Johnson really say JERK OFF THE CORN? No way. Don’t believe it.

Even though ‘Duke lost’ are two of the best words in the English language, I find the fact that none of you are worrying about Dick Vitale to be a bit disturbing. He’s already a bit mentally unstable; this just might send him over the edge.

It’s cool SpartanFan. Vitale’s failsafe, UNC, won so he is good for at least 48 hours.

True, Sean. However, tomorrow night Dickie V will be beside himself, as Michigan State’s defense will shut down the young Tar Heels.
Go Green!!

Dookie V somehow just managed to say that Coack K did his best job coaching this year with this Duke team. Yep, 6 high school AA’s and a 1st round NCAA exit. In other news Dookie V thinks that W has done the best job as a president ever.
