Ohio State-Georgetown Liveblog (Buckeyes Win, 67-60)
Uncategorized March 31st. 2007, 9:31pm
What up. Less than an hour to the Georgetown-Ohio State Final Four opener, and we’ll be around to attempt a liveblog. We’ve got a brew in hand, so if the spelling is a bit off, or we go all Gus Johnson on our keyboard, blame it on the booze.
6:00 – Hello friends, TBL here to ramble about G’Town-OSU. Think it’ll be the better game, plus, by 9 p.m., we probably will having trouble typing, that’s how drunk we’ll be. The first Heineken was just cracked.
6:01 – Nice work by CBS on that 25-year ‘One Shining Moment.’ Don’t know about you, but we had goosebumps. And we also got the line for Nantz should Georgetown win the title, ‘Like Father, Like Son! Georgetown wins the National Championship.’
6:02 – That Sam Ryan has some great DSLs. Cute, for sure, but is she hotter than Bonnie Bernstein? That’s the question. And how will she handle Billy Donovan when he curses at her after UCLA upsets the Gators tonight? Wait – Jim Tressel sends text messages? That’s how he lands all those recruits and why the Buckeyes are always in contention.
6:07 – Packer points – gotta love em! (Wait – they never came!) We’ll stop going by actual time here, and go by the game clock. And those links will be gone at the first TV timeout. Not big fans of clutter.
19:42 – What’s with the green paint? Is that our crappy 2001 TV or is the paint actually green? Yuck. Hoyas go man-to-man and Hibbert’s already got a foul.
18:39 – Nice hook by Hibbert. And a bizarre foul on Greg Oden setting an illegal screen. Silly. Question: has anyone ever seen Oden smile? Conley with a rare layup miss.
17:30 – Butler for three … splash. They’ve got to guard him. Wallace answers. Oden has a foul, but isn’t it too early for the 2-3 zone from OSU?
17:19 – ODEN picks up his second foul on a charge. Of course Jeff Green took it. See ya at the 8 minute mark, Greg. That should change the game. Hibbert’s first chance minus Oden and he gets called for basket interference.
15:38 – Ivan Harris hits a triple. Like lefties. Didn’t he play with LeBron in high school? Great defensive play by Ron Lewis to strip Hibbert before he could get an easy layup. End result is an OSU layup for an 8-5 lead.
14:30 – Jeff Green has been an absolute non-factor so far – hasn’t had a meaningless touch. He’s got a freshman on him. Guess the reason is because the Hoyas are looking to force the ball to Hibbert, who scores inside. 8-7 Buckeyes.
13:08 – Conley hits a floater in the lane, and Billy Packer raves. Hoyas look too hard for Hibbert, turn it over, and the Buckeyes score for a 12-7 lead.
12:15 – Hoyas miss another triple. Hibbert out for a breather. Sluggish start for Georgetown on offense. Probably five turnovers and seven points. Wallace can’t connect on a layup.
11:15 – Conley with a filthy crossover and layup. Packer stroking himself under the table. Jeff Green great drive and dish to Ewing … and his layup goes in and out. That’s what, three missed layups by Georgetown?
9:48 – For the gamblers in the house, hope you took the under. Nobody’s scoring. Ewing jacks an ill-advised three, it misses. At the other end, Cook’s leaner spins in and out. No offense happening in this one.
9:02 – Wallace hits another three for the Hoyas. He’s the only one making shots for Georgetown. Snapped a five minute basketless streak for the Hoyas. 14-10 OSU lead.
8:28 – Another Georgetown turnover, and now we get the under 12 timeout. Geez. That’s how bad of game this has been. How many people predicted this would be a ‘classic?’ It’s looking like Oden will end the first half with two minutes and two fouls. There is still plenty of time for the offensives to get in rhythm, but we’re looking at a 50-48 game.
8:10 – Hibbert’s altering everything in the lane. Hoyas have six turnovers and four baskets. Just a thought – if Gus Johnson had this game, would he be making a big deal out of the misses? Summers rise and fire … BOTH TEAMS ARE SO COLD! Nah, doesn’t have the same ring.
6:48 – Ivan Harris makes one of two free throws. Then Hibbert dunks off a great feed from Doc Rivers’ son. And Hibbert gets another dunk, putting back a missed layup by Summers. 15-14 Buckeyes and still no movement from Oden on the bench. Hibbert’s got 8, and Wallace has 6. Ron Lewis another offensive rebound … foul inside … call is on … Hibbert! His second!
6:40 – The Hoyas had an 11-minute advantage with Oden on the bench, and didn’t take advantage. Now Hibbert’s probably done for the half with two fouls. Ron Lewis sinks two free throws for a 17-14 lead.
6:19 – Georgetown has seven turnovers and six baskets. Ugh.
5:15 – Hunter swats what should have been an easy layup for Summers. This OSU defense has been impressive. Jeff Green doesn’t have a shot attempt! And the Buckeyes haven’t made a bucket in six minutes.
4:30 – Why is Macklin dribbling the ball at all? Turnover results in Butler layup, and OSU goes up 20-14.
4:15 – Sapp hits a three, becoming the first Georgetown player other than Wallace or Hibbert to score. But Conley quickly answers with a three of his own. Butler misses a wide-open three. So ugly.
3:40 – Halftime is just about here, and we think it’s time to put out an AMBER ALERT for Georgetown’s best player, Jeff Green. Somebody needs to go to his room to see if he missed the alarm. Because he hasn’t show up at all today.
3:14 – Jeff Green drives and scores. About time. 25-19 OSU.
2:44 – Wallace pounds it in to Green and he’s fouled. Boy, it’s great that they found Jeff Green. Only gets one of two free throws, and it’s 25-20.
2:00 – Conley blows by Macklin for a layup; at the other end, Wallace pounces on a loose ball and Green ends up with a layup. 27-22 OSU. Butler misses a hanging jumper in the lane. Neither team could possibly be shooting 40 percent.
:30 – Another miss by Butler after the Hoyas ninth turnover of the half. Hoyas hold it for the last shot … and Summers is going to the foul line because Hunter fouled him on a dunk attempt. Misses the first. Hits the second. 27-23. Conley’s shot is blocked, and that’s all she wrote. Boring first half, 27-23 OSU.
2nd Half
19:13 – Great passing by the Hoyas against the zone, resulting in a Wallace jumper. But Harris upstages that with a great putback on an Oden miss. 29-25 OSU. Hibbert another dunk! 29-27 OSU.
18:17 – And we’re tied! Nice defensive steal by Sapp, and on the break Green feeds Summers for the layup to knot things at 29. Oden answers quickly with an easy bucket over Hibbert.
17:30 – Great pass by Hibbert to Wallace for an easy layup. The OSU zone has many holes. It’s like they’re lost. Oden misses at the other end, Hoyas can take a lead …
16:30 – Hibbert’s hook is off, and OSU forces the issue and Harris – we keep saying his name – hits a 10-footer for a 33-31 lead. But Sapp gives the Hoyas the lead with three against the porous zone.
15:56 – Awesome sequence of events, and it results in Hibbert’s third foul. He blocked a Conley layup attempt, but the Hoyas turned it over … then Hibbert thwarted what looked to be an Oden reverse dunk, only to foul Ivan Harris, who collected the loose ball. Conley’s getting props as the best player on the floor, but Ivan Harris is having a nice game as a garbage man.
15:55 – We’ve got some readers! Thanks for the comments, fellas. Great point about Conley being the next Chris Paul. And outstanding photo of Greg Oden getting his mack daddy vibe on during Spring Break, Micah. Can’t wait to see the rest of that album.
15:15 – Harris makes one free throw, and then on the ensuing possession, Oden got it deep and threw down a filthy dunk. Slapped the glass, too. Wonder if they’ll call a tech next time. Panic time for the Hoyas.
14:55 – Green with a turnover … what a reverse layup by Conley. 38-34 OSU.
14:11 – Hoyas with another turnover … but OSU does as well as the pass is too low for Oden and it trickles between his legs. Jeff Green being guarded by Oden, and as Packer pointed out, he needs to draw that third on the big fella.
13:27 – Oden plays off Green, who sees the court well and finds Sapp for a layup. 38-36 OSU. Immediately OSU goes to Oden, who is fouled by Ewing. Hoyas need Macklin on the floor.
12:51 – Oden hook was too easy. Ewing’s only 6-9. Get Macklin in there!!
12:32 – Risky move … Hibbert back in. If he gets his 4th, the Hoyas could be doomed. We would have gone Macklin to steal some fouls and minutes. He’s longer than Ewing, and more active. Oden scores over a passive Hibbert. 42-36, OSU.
11:50 – This is why Thompson is a candidate for the Kentucky job, and we’re not – Hibbert draws the 3rd on Oden, and scores. He’ll shoot one after the TV timeout.
11:05 – Oden on the bench now. Lewis misses a three – Hunter with the putback. But Hibbert again gets the ball in great position and he’s fouled by Lighty. Hibbert misses the FT, but the Hoyas retain possession thanks to Ewing. Hibbert fouled again! He’ll shoot two. Where’s Oden?
10:51 – Hibbert hits one of two free throws, and it’s 44-41. Oden remains on the bench.
10:24 – Lewis misfires on a wide-open three. He and Butler aren’t hitting anything. Stoic Oden remains planted on the bench. Conley hasn’t been as much of a factor in the second half. Hunter turns it over.
9:40 – Wallace for three, splash! Tied at 44. Jim Nantz just called his shot the ‘Alabama Rain Maker.’
8:50 – Hibbert with a tremendously stupid 4th foul, holding Hunter on a long rebound. Hibbert to the pine, Oden to the court. That was a silly foul, and Billy Packer called it.
8:20 – Oden easily scores over Jeff Green. Looked far too easy. Wallace misses a three, and Lighty responds with a layup, and OSU leads 48-44. Paging Jeff Green …
7:24 – Summers the freshman misses a three (he hasn’t made anything all night) and Butler scores a transition layup for a 50-44 lead. Timeout Hoyas. When do you bring back Hibbert? When the lead grows to 10? Now?
7:01 – Looking at that 4th Hibbert foul, it’s clear to us – he needs another year in college. Just to become a smarter player. The action begins and Nantz mentions how Green hasn’t done anything to take over in the second half. Wallace misses a long three as the shot clock expires; at the other end, Oden nearly threw down a nasty dunk, but a blocking foul is called on Green. Questionable call in our book. But if that dunk connects, it’s on YouTube in the next 45 seconds.
6:01 – Oden only makes one of two, and Green finally scores at the other end to make it 51-46. Packer chides Green – and rightly so – for taking so long to score in this half. Butler hits a three, and it’s 54-46.
5:10 – Hibbert hits an 18-footer, but thte Hoyas need some stops. And they get one as Oden misses. But the Hoyas turn it over. Conley – of course – goes to the rack for a layup. Goaltending, Hoyas. 56-48, OSU. Hibbert quick bucket, deficit back to six.
4:00 – Crazy sequence, Hoyas cut it to 56-52 on Sapp layup. It’s turning into a classic. Oden misses in close.
2:36 – Green just drew the fourth on Oden driving to the hoop. OSU could have put the Hoyas a minute ago, but Ron Lewis simply cannot find his shot. In close, from three, nothing is falling. Box score says 1-for-8. Hey, we took the Hoyas, so that’s good news for us.
2:36 – Packer and Nantz are easy targets, but they’ve called a great game.
2:32 – Lighty draws a charge on Green. They’re raving about Lighty, and he looks like a 20-point scorer next year when Oden and Conley leave. Oden hits an 8-footer thanks to a friendly rim.
1:41 – Well folks, that may do it. Hibbert misses in close, and Lighty scores and draws a foul. Damn. It was a good run, Georgetown. This kid Lighty has had a strong second half. Makes the FT, 61-52, OSU.
1:25 – Wallace misses a leaning three, and Oden collects the board. Looks like a predominantly freshman team is going to the National Championship. Shades of the Fab 5. Sort of.
:45 – Monster rejection by Oden on a Summers layup attempt, but Green scores to trim it to 61-54. Not enough time left for a comeback, though.
:34 – Conley makes a couple free throws, and though the Buckeyes have this one in the bag, the Hoyas remain hopeful. Wallace makes a three, and it’s 63-57 with 21 seconds left.
:05 – Two free throws by Lewis, followed by a Wallace three makes it 65-60, but there’s not enough time left. It’s academic, folks. First question – does Jeff Green leave Georgetown on such a low note? He’s made 4-for-5 field goals for only nine points. The Hoyas lose nobody to graduation, so if the everybody returns, another Final Four isn’t out of the realm.
:02 – Packer – love the guy. When talking about Walton and Alcindor, and comparing them to Hibbert and Oden, Packer goes, ‘Not yet, not even close.’ Then Nantz asked, ‘down the road?’ and Packer quickly goes, ‘No.’ That’s why we like Packer. So funny.
