Ranking the BCS Coaches
Uncategorized May 8th. 2007, 3:44pm
Some guy named Tom Dienhart at The Sporting News decided to rank the BCS coaches. It’s an exercise in futility, much like all lists are (including our college football rankings!). And it made us angry. Perhaps you’ll feel the same way.
We’ll let you handle the heavy lifting (pounding Dienhart), but here are just a few of the rankings that pushed us to the edge of catatonia:
12. Urban Meyer, Florida: Let’s see .. the guy won at Bowling Green, took Utah to a New Year’s Day bowl game (victory) and won a National title in his second year at Florida. There are 11 better coaches in the country than this guy? Are we sure Dienhart has a pulse?
33. Greg Schiano, Rutgers: If, with a straight face, you can tell us that Schiano is just the fourth best coach in the Big East, we will give up watching Lost and buy you two upper deck tickets to a MLB game in your city this summer. Problem is, there’s absolutely no logic that you can present to back this up. Nada. You’d have an easier time convincing Ron Artest to feed his dog or getting Paul Goodell to reduce Pacman’s suspension.
The Top of the ACC: Wake Forest’s Jim Grobe may just ‘walk on water’ as his next trick, but how can you tell us that he’s a better coach than Frank Beamer, who has built an empire in Blacksburg? Tom O’ Brien, ranked third in the conference, won six straight bowl games at BC before leaving for NC State. Outstanding. Bobby Bowden only checks in at fourth in the league, despite being the winningest coach in NCAA history (among other accolades). Anybody home?
Just what are the criteria for these rankings, Tommy?

The information you have about Tom O’Brien is backwards. He won 6 straight bowl games at BC before leaving for NC State.

He’s a Purdue grad so Tiller automatically is bumped 20 spots.

how about touchdown Charlie at #42? Surprised no ND readers have their panties in a bunch about that one…

Jeff Tedford among many other is way too low.

Ranking people who haven’t had a chance to do anything yet — i.e. new coaches — is silly. Even within the BCS schools, all things are not created equal.

WCT –
I’ll bite. I was a little miffed about that ranking, but in looking at the rest of the list I realized how ridiculous the whole thing was. No use in getting worked up over that steaming pile of a list.
(and for the record, as an ND fan I don’t think ol’ crewcut deserves top 10 ranking or anything. But 42 is pretty damn low)

some points.
1. This was put out on april 26th. The Big Lead was on vacay. Dont think it took them “forever” to get angry about it.
2. I went to Syracuse and how is Greg Robinson not last? Did anyone watch the Iowa game last year?
3. Who still reads Sporting News?

Deinart has an absolute man crush on Tom O’Brien. To hear Deinart say it, TOB is the only reason the kids on the BC football team actually know how to play the crazy game. In an earlier column, he ranked the best coaching hires of the offseason and ranked O’Brien AHEAD of Nick Saban.
NICK SABAN!

As for the lack of ND response……..this list came out about two weeks ago. That’s what they call “old news”.

Us ND fans have known Dinehart as an ND hater for a while, so anything he writes just kind of blows over anyway.
Also, any list that has Dennis Erickson and Kirk Ferentz ahead of Urban Meyer must be a joke anyway.

If Petrino hadn’t left Louisville, I would be able to take you up on your Schiano challenge. I’m not convinced necessarily that Rodriguez and Leavitt are better coaches, but any ranking that has them (in any order) as the top three coaches in the conferences is a legitimate list. The new guy at Louisville though… uh, what?
And is it me or did Meyer get penalized for the fact he may jump to the NFL someday? Again… what?

As a Virginia fan, I have to say that ranking Al Groh #34 out of 66 is about, oh, 30 slots too high. Unless we’re only counting home games, in which case #34 is about right.

schiano’s ranking comes from the same place that won’t recognize the big east as a top-notch conference because of miami and va tech leaving a few years ago. you have to sort of let it roll of your back.

This guy has been hanging out with Macho Camacho. True, I am a diehard LSU fan, but let’s look at who he has ahead of Les Miles (22-4 in 2 seasons):
Bill Callahan
Dennis Francione
The coaches at:
S Florida
Louisville
Vandy
Purdue
Kansas
Cincinnati
Colorado
Kentucky
What an idiot!
