All the Hype for That? Liddell Basically Got One-Punched
Uncategorized May 27th. 2007, 1:22pmQuinton Jackson vs. Chuck Liddell KO
Our main Mixed Martial Arts guy, Eternal Stench, hopes to have a recap later, but the bottom line here is that ESPN Magazine cover boy Chuck Liddell lost the most-hyped UFC match ever Saturday night in the first round.
This Rampage Jackson fellow, who, to a non-UFC follower (that’s us), looked about six times more menacing than Liddell, drilled Chuck with a right hook about 100 seconds into the fight. Then, he pounced on the champ, hammered him with about four punches to the face, and the ref called the fight. This video may be scrubbed from the net quickly (UFC’s like the NFL that way), but there isn’t much to see, anyway. Except perhaps the golf ball-sized knot that emerges quickly under Liddell’s left eye.

This highlights the inert problem with MMA. It CAN be exciting. It CAN be intense. But it also can just be two guys circling each other until a brief exchange that ends in a ko/tko/tapout. Its hard to get hyped for a sport like this. I want to become a fan, but everytime I look, its b.s. like last night. Here’s hoping that we get that Coture Vs. Scary Russian Dude from Pride super-fight. Maybe that can go to the 2nd round!

It’s “Rocky”’s fault for teaching two generations of white kids that it’s okay to lead with the face during a fight and to never have a jab.

So, will the next big PPV event be big enough to “save” UFC?
May 27th, 2007 at 5:39 PM
It’s hard to stay on top in boxing or the UFC because people that are rich and/or famous don’t like getting punched in the face or choked out. The minute you get a taste of success and the money starts to roll in, you’re just not as hungry. It’s human nature. Only truly special athletes can stay hungry and focused when they’re rich but it’s even harder when other men try to hurt you for a living. Especially when those men haven’t “made it” yet and want what you have.
UFC will continue to run into this problem because hype+money+fame does not a good fighter make. Until they find the extraordinary people that are personally motivated to stay on top, this will happen more often than not. It’s an inherent challenge of gladiatorial sports when money is involved.

I guess all the UFC fans can start watching WWE again?
All the talk this week how UFC(human cock fighting) was so much better than boxing, last night certainly cleared that up

As a boxing guy, this is pretty satisfying. All the UFC fans that paid to see that after ripping boxing fans for paying 55 bucks to see De la Hoya/Maywether, how do you feel now? Maywether put on a 12 round masterpiece to win that fight, and some dude I have never heard of lays out the UFC poster boy in two minutes? UFC will never be bigger than boxing, it just hit its peak and promptly came crashing down. Meanwhile, I’ll be anticipating Hopkins/Wright and hopefully a Jermain Taylor/Kelly Pavlick showdown. Hope you enjoyed your day in the sun UFC fans, its all over now.

I’ve never gotten into MMA. Maybe it’s my advanced age of 54, I don’t know; but this is just another reason to laugh in Shrutebag’s face. He’s built up Liddell as this bigger than life character, rivaling Ali and Joe Louis.

MMA is still better than boxing because there generally is a definitive winner
as opposed to two guys jabbong and dancing for 12 rounds, fights are actually finished
overall, it was a good ppv, I feel much better about buying it than I did when I went to a friend’s for De La Hoya/Maywether
May 27th, 2007 at 10:12 PM
This was a good ppv. Yeah, we wanted to see a couple more blows exchanged between Chuck and Rampage, but Chuck, got Got. It happens. As for Floyd’s 12 round masterpiece…yeah, okay. The fight that was pretty much universally panned as two guys dancing around sizing each other up for half an hour? I don’t disagree that this will set UFC back a year or two, (in terms of casual fan growth) but ESPN and SI and other mainstream outlets aren’t going anywhere. MMA is here to stay.

now i can see why MMA is so much safer than boxing. nothing actually happens
May 27th, 2007 at 11:36 PM
jabbing and dancing comes from actually having to break down someone who is practicing defense. There aren’t too many champions in boxing who would have led with a body blow, posed with it for 2 seconds and then retreated with his hands down and chin open.

3 boxing fans in one place? Is the other one watching Reel Classics?
May 28th, 2007 at 3:21 AM
So will Rampage now make the talk show rounds that the ‘Fighting Accountant’ did? I think someone needs to seriously set up a boxing vs UFC type PPV if it was with legit guys it might be the best selling PPV of all time….seems to be some real hate between the 2 sides.

Can the UFC ever hope to top the spectacle of Zeus one-timing John C. Reilly?
May 28th, 2007 at 5:01 AM
Stupid boxing fans. UFC is here to stay. Deal with it. What happened last night will not change that fact.

You obviously dont watch the UFC. If you wanted to become a fan you’d shut your pie-hole and watch the Parisyan-Burkman fight from last night. A very technical and exciting fight between two contenders that didnt end after a “brief exchange that ends in a ko/tko/tapout.”

DAYUM!!!!
Rampage put a UNFORGETABLE ass stomping on that white boy. I surely thought the white boy was going to win the way ESPN pumped him up. You’d thought he was fighting a rubie.
LOL. UFC/MMA = Garbage. Who would pay for some shit like that? It’s not like they got a Mike Tyson that’ll hang around a minute or two.
These mofo’s get blasted into the canvas and are NEVER the same.
May 28th, 2007 at 8:38 PM
Buster: First, that “white boy” has a name. It’s Chuck Liddell.
Second, why can Buster get away with that? I don’t think it would be cool for me to come on here and say “Liddell put an ass whoopin on that black boy! I thought the black would win but…”
I’m really not offended by this. Just curious as to why he can say it and I can’t.
